Three votes, two votes and one vote are awarded by the umpires in each home-and-away match. A season total is the sum of every vote a player polled, and the leaderboard is ordered on that total. In the round-by-round table a blank cell means no votes were polled in that round, which keeps the vote-getting rounds readable.

Coverage is limited to the seasons in the season selector, which is the definitive list of what is held. Where a player polled for more than one club in a season, the club shown is the one from the latest round they polled in. Votes for a season still being played appear here after the count.

How the AFL Brownlow Medal Tracker works

This is a data tool with no model behind it. Pick a season and you get the leaderboard sorted on total votes, plus a round-by-round grid showing where those votes were polled. Rows are players, columns are rounds, and a round in which a player polled nothing is left blank rather than shown as a zero, so the pattern of a vote-getting season is readable at a glance. A running total column carries the accumulated figure after each round.

Coverage is limited to the seasons held in the OzFootball database, and only those seasons appear in the selector. No range is claimed beyond what is listed there. Votes for a season in progress are not shown here until they have been released, so an in-progress season will appear empty even where match data for it exists. For a view of who is scoring heavily before votes are released, use the predictor, which is a projection and is labelled as one.

Formula
Votes available per match: 3, 2 and 1 Season total = the sum of all votes polled across the home-and-away season Leaderboard order: total votes, highest first

Example

Pick a season and the leaderboard sorts on total votes, highest first. Reading one row across the round-by-round grid: 3 votes in round 2, 2 in round 5, 1 in round 9 and 3 in round 14 gives a running total of 9 after round 14, with every round in which no votes were polled left blank.

How to use it

  1. Choose a season from the selector, which lists the seasons held.
  2. Read the leaderboard, ordered on total votes.
  3. Follow a player row across the round-by-round grid.
  4. Use the running total column to see how the season accumulated.

AFL Brownlow Medal Tracker FAQ

What is in the tracker?

Actual Brownlow Medal votes as recorded, presented two ways. The leaderboard shows season totals ordered highest first, and the round-by-round grid shows which rounds each player polled in and how many votes were awarded. Nothing on this page is estimated, weighted or adjusted, and no model is applied to any figure. If you want a projection of votes from stat lines, that is a separate tool and it is labelled as a projection throughout.

Which seasons are covered?

The seasons held in the OzFootball database, which are the ones listed in the season selector on the page. No claim is made to a complete historical record beyond what appears there. If a season you are looking for is not in the selector, the vote data for it is not held rather than being hidden or filtered. The selector is the definitive list of what can be read here.

Why does the current season show no votes?

Votes are not shown for a season until they have been released, so a season in progress appears with an empty grid even though the match data behind it exists. This is deliberate: filling the gap with an estimate would turn a data page into a model page without saying so. Until the votes are released, the predictor is the tool that gives an indication, and it makes clear that its numbers are projected rather than recorded.

Does the tracker predict a winner?

No. It reports votes that were awarded and orders players on the totals of those votes. There is no forecast, no partial-season extrapolation and no weighting. Where a season is complete, the top of the leaderboard is a matter of record. Where a season is not yet counted, the tracker shows nothing rather than guessing. The Brownlow Medal Predictor is the tool that projects, and it uses a stated weighting you can inspect.

How do I read the round-by-round grid?

Each row is a player and each column is a round. A cell holds the votes polled in that round, either 3, 2 or 1, and stays blank where no votes were polled, which keeps the vote-getting rounds visible instead of buried among zeros. The final column carries the running total, so you can see how a season accumulated rather than only where it finished. Sorting the leaderboard reorders the rows without changing any of the round figures.
