The Draft Value Index is a lookup table, not a formula. Curve fits to the published figures miss individual picks by as much as 273 points, so nothing here is interpolated. The pre-2025 table is the only one the AFL has published in full and is superseded from 2025. For the current table only confirmed values appear: pick 1 at 3,000, pick 18 at 836, pick 20 at 757, pick 30 at 454, pick 36 at 317, pick 40 at 238 and pick 54 at 14 for the 2025 model, plus pick 2 at 2,481 and pick 6 at 1,659 published for 2026.
How the AFL Draft Pick Value Calculator works
The AFL Draft Value Index is a lookup table, not a formula. The AFL built it by hand and published it as a table, and attempts to fit a curve to it miss by as much as 273 points, so there is no equation to apply. The complete published table covers picks 1 to 73 and is included here in full, labelled as superseded. From 2025 points attach to picks 1 to 54 only, and the AFL has not published that current table in full. This calculator shows the confirmed anchor values for it and leaves the rest blank rather than interpolating figures and presenting them as official.
Bid matching is where those points are spent. When a rival club bids on an academy or father-son player, the club with the prior access pays in draft points to match. In 2025 that was a flat 10 per cent discount on the bid value. From 2026 the flat discount is replaced by a schedule tied to where the matching club finished on the ladder, which loads the cost for clubs that finished at the top and discounts it for clubs that finished in the bottom eight. Two further rules apply: for bids up to and including pick 36 a maximum of two current-draft picks may be used to match, while bids at pick 37 or later can be matched with the next pick a club holds, and a club may run a points deficit of 412 in 2026, down from 1,167 in 2025, only if it holds a first-round pick in the following draft, from which the deficit is then deducted.

Example
A bid at pick 1 carries 3,000 points, which is confirmed for the current model. A club that finished 1st or 2nd takes a 20 per cent loading on bids at picks 1 to 18, so matching that bid costs 3,000 x 1.20 = 3,600 points. Under the flat 10 per cent discount that applied in 2025, the same bid cost 2,700 points.

Is there a formula behind the Draft Value Index?
No. The AFL published the index as a table of values rather than deriving it from an equation, and it was built by hand. Independent attempts to fit a curve to the published figures fail by up to 273 points at individual picks, which is more than the entire value of a late second-round selection. Any tool offering a formula for pick value is fitting its own approximation. The correct approach is to read the value straight from the published table for the pick in question.
Which picks carry draft points now?
Picks 1 to 54, reduced from picks 1 to 73 under the earlier table. The AFL has not published the current table in full, so only confirmed values can be stated. For the 2025 model those are pick 1 at 3,000, pick 18 at 836, pick 20 at 757, pick 30 at 454, pick 36 at 317, pick 40 at 238, pick 54 at 14 and nothing from pick 55. Two 2026 figures are also published, pick 2 at 2,481 and pick 6 at 1,659. Everything between those anchors is unpublished.
How does bid matching work from 2026?
The flat 10 per cent discount used in 2025 is replaced by a schedule based on where the matching club finished. A club that finished 1st or 2nd pays a 20 per cent loading on bids at picks 1 to 18, a club that finished 3rd or 4th pays a 10 per cent loading over the same range, clubs finishing 5th to 10th pay the bid value with no adjustment, and clubs finishing 11th to 18th receive a 10 per cent discount on bids at picks 1 to 36.
How many picks can a club use to match a bid?
For bids up to and including pick 36, a maximum of two current-draft picks may be used to match. That caps how far a club can spread the cost across its hand and can force it to spend a higher selection than it would like. For bids at pick 37 or later, the club can match with its next pick. The rule bites hardest on early bids, where the points required are large and only two selections are available to cover them.
Can a club match a bid without enough points?
Up to a limit. A club may finish a draft in a points deficit of 412 in 2026, reduced from 1,167 in 2025, but only if it holds a first-round pick in the following draft. The deficit is then deducted from that pick. So the shortfall is borrowed against next year rather than written off, and a club without a first-round selection to borrow against cannot use the concession at all.
