West Spoon Eagles

It’s a thing of beauty. Is Jack just about ready to make his WCER debut? How many jabs has he had? We’ve got high standards in the WAFL I think you need 3. ??

Well what a rabble they have become. Could be 2 spoons coming there way by seasons end.

I think Simpson is now hinting, without saying it, that a rebuild could be on the cards. Darling could still be worth trading come season end as will a couple of others. It’s their turn for a couple of years in the bottom half of the ladder. He would be wanting for some positive action though….there’s a bloke over east that is taking a year off coaching.

Would that be Ross Lyon by any chance Sharkie? He comes well endorsed. Cam Shephard might be another that could be interested.

I think Alistair Clarkson is the man that 58Shark is referring to. He would be a good get and he has been linked with a few clubs including Gold Coast. The question is whether or not Clarkson would want to take over a team that is rebuilding and do the hard yards. If Simpson is still up for it, the Eagles should back him in for the long haul I think. He has already coached them to a flag and generally has presided over a successful era.

West Coast have already tried to lure Clarko no? before they hired his 2 IC Simpson. The situation for both parties has changed so maybe they might be able to lure him West. If not, Peter Sumich could be another to consider.

Clarko was the one I was referring to, but never thought about Lyon. As for the SuperCoach of the century, surely you’re making a very sick joke TiEm??? Suma could be interested, but I wonder why he hasn’t been picked up before? Personally, I’d like to see Simmo with them for at least another year. After all as Mike said, he did coach them to a flag. And he did it with the 3 top players out.

Simpson does seem to have an obsession with retaining possession of the ball by going sideways and backwards though and it has become extremely predictable.
I don’t reckon the Eagles would go after Clarkson, their past two coaches Worsfold and Simpson were untried coaches and I reckon Schofield would be a leading candidate. Just feels like he’s timing his run beautifully. I think Simpson has another two seasons on his contract so doesn’t that mean the earliest the Eagles could get Clarkson is 25? If you sack a coach does their salary remain as part of your SOFD cap?

Clarko’s the face of the Tassie AFL team push which is likely to happen in 2024. He will coach that team as they will need someone with a huge profile, like GWS did with Sheedy. Clarko will be on massive money and the travel to and from Tassie is insignificant apart from a game or two in the West or Qld.
Simmo will see out his contract and then it gets interesting, Schoey would certainly be considered.

But of course there is the awe inspiring prospect of the worlds greatest coach throwing his hat in the ring …bahahahahahah.

Having the WAFL’s biggest pretend coach take over at the eagles will definitely see the end to my following of the club.

Port Adelaide are also sounding out Clarkson. But the AFL have a mission for him,Gold Coast.
Stewie Dew has already been told AC will be there senior coach in 2023.With the AFL picking up his pay cheque. The AFL done similar to get Leigh Matthews to the Lion’s.
As for West Coast, the T Kelly trade with Geelong was a disaster.Leaving Jarrod Brander there last first round pickup.Who shown the door last year..
They have an Adelaide Crows size rebuild on the horizon. All players in there late 20’s are tradeable, probably around 5 in the current team.

What an abysmal effort by WC, training run for the Tigers, played them nicely into form and confidence which I’m sure the rest of the comp are pleased about. Good first up effort by Greg Clark, 24 disposals in a team that was obliterated, should see him hold his place for some time.

Brisbane up next - should be another hiding.

You can excuse poor skills or execution of game plans but you can never tolerate lack of effort and that’s what I could see last night, particularly from some of the senior players. It was also quite interesting to see some of the Eagles players laughing and joking with the opposition after the game whereas Greg Clark was down on his haunches looking devastated that his team were pumped by so much in his debut game. He is really one of only twos positives to come out of the game for the Eagles. The other of course is the 700 goals for Josh Kennedy, what a champion he has been.

Spot on Mike. Time for some of the so called superstars had a run with the ressies….for a few games, not just 1. As for JK’s 700, there were only 1/2 a dozen or so players that ran up to him on his 700th. Typical of their attitude and application.
With Brisbane next week followed by Melbourne, it’s going to be a slaughterhouse. I hope the coach won’t be called to blame.

Just read an article saying that some of the Eagle’s powerbrokers are putting together a huge offer that they will present to Clarkson.

good luck with that…my 2 cents worth?, i think Clarko is yesterdays man.

Good to hear from you again unk. I think the afl would want Clarkson elsewhere. I tend to agree with you, I not sure he’s what the Eagles need. Just give Simpson a chance.

Yeah i float in and out 58S… reckon my cats are about a year behind you blokes in falling off the cliff!!

The problem I think is that they have been so successful as a club that supporters, members and the board expect them to be continuously in contention for finals which is an unrealistic goal with the system set up the way it is. Teams like Geelong and Sydney have also defied the odds to stay competitive but there will come a time when they have to bottom out and rebuild. The Eagles need to use this season to play as many young guys on their list as possible and giving the Senior players the role of showing them the ropes. There are going to be some awful beltings ( as there already has been) but continual denial of the fact that they are now in a rebuild mode won’t do their long term future any good. They will almost certainly finish in the bottom 4 so they will have the opportunity to draft the cream of the 2023 crop and go from there. If their recruitment is good, they should be able to be back in finals contention in 2 -3 years. They should look at Brisbane as a case study, they finished last in 2017 but were in the top 2 by 2019.
I agree with 58shark, they should stick with Simpson as I reckon he has the skills and knowledge to manage the rebuild.
