I had Quiney on top but I think Maddinson has at least equalled him now as the worst Test selection in Australian Test history!

There was also a guy called Wayne Phillips, not the Wicketkeeper batsman who was pretty good. This Wayne Phillips was a small guy from Victoria who played 1 test and was out of his depth. In the 70s there was a spin bowler named John Watkins who struggled to land his deliveries on the pitch but featured in a match winning batting partnership wirh Bob Massie in one of the few tests he played. There was Ken Eastwood who was accomplished shield played who was selected when Bill Lawry was dropped during an ashes series.

Well considering the same 2 batsmen are in at stumps…morally one could say Australia are in the box seat …only if you leave out the fact it’s Aus 2nd innings. Better effort one could say, but then again, after the first innings effort, not hard to top I guess.
Perhaps Labs should bat 8 or 9, 30’s are good from there, sadly not at 3. Renshaw and Webster’s double failures, leave a lot of work for Head, Smith and Carey to do. A Head maiden double test ton and a Scotty B maiden 50 is what Aust needs, not asking for too much eh?
