Mr Whippy, hotdogs, and burgers watching the WAFL was a must every Sat growing up in the 70’s & 80’s as a kid for me. Analysing the line ups in the paper pre game, plus the colts and reserves lists. Reading the Westside footy paper during the week and over reading the Footy budget on game day
50+K 1979 Derby GF, Doug Green telescopic arms, Bomber bursting through packs, Squizzy and Jumping Jimmy taking speccies. So many great players running around in those days…the footy was the be all and end all for me as a kid…sounds like the same for many others on here as well…good times indeed.

Terrific topic and lots of great memories from the read.
One thing I remember is every second kent in the outer seemed to have a trannie with them - not the xxxx, the electronic type. Folks watching the footy and simultaneously listening to it. It was everywhere. These days it’s only Radio Birdman from WP and Mutton Chops from P who seem to persist with what is now the desynchronised viewing and listening.
That would be Ross from Perth.
Keep forgetting the little fella’s name from West Perth,but he’s a good sort.
some random Bassendean memories
- Any win by Swans in the 70s was celebrated because they were so rare, one day in 1970 we beat East Perth who were on top and Swans were on the bottom!
- That 60 goal game in 1979 referred to earlier. Crazy stuff
- One game in the 70s, Gary Sidebottoms dad had to be restrained from running on the ground after Stan Magro had flattened his son!
- Being part of a 22,000 crowd there in 1980. Heaven knows how they fit us all in.
- Boucher vs Moss in the early 80s. In one encounter Boucher ended up with a bloodied face.
- Stephen Michaels 200th was at Bassendean. There was a special train for the Doggies supporters. It was a great occasion but we spoiled the party.
- Celebrations at Bassendean after the premierships. Particularly the 1982 and 2010 flags.
- The preliminary final in 2010 against East Perth gave us all a brief glimpse back in to what WAFL crowd atmosphere was like back in the Pre Eagles era. Sadly that was the last hurrah of a golden age and will never be repeated.
I could go on for ages but you might think I have spent half of my life there

You guys were pretty good in '74/75.
Yep made the four both years under Jack Ensor. You guys beat us in the 1974 preliminary final and we crashed out in straight sets in 1975. We were found out for pace on the dry tracks in the finals

Good memories Mike. I have a mate who is a mad Souths supporter and was on the Stephen Michael express to Basso. One of his lunatic buddies decided to jump off the moving train heading back to Freo which in those days didn’t have automatic doors into the Swan River as they went across the bridge which is being rebuilt in East Freo.
Apparently, he showed up at the pub about an hour later pretty pleased with himself.

We were all lucky to have witnessed the WAFL at its zenith back then.
Sadly never to be repeated.
Despite all the hoohah, glitz and glammer of the modern day afl I find it all a bit over the top and fake tbh!
I vaguely knew the bloke back then Grassy and he was a mad b*stard full stop.

Not that one mate, the rail bridge is still there, the one gone and rebuilt is the wood traffic bridge, this one was the more common one that you could jump from.

Mike yes the 22500 at bassendean Dean was the biggest crowd ever at that ground. They eventually opened the gates so we will never know the full crowd numbers. Yes as 20 year old I was there. I remember the game and spoiling Souths big day.
