having either side of the families split supporting EF & SF
couple of others EP & SD
Getting a ride on an old Leyland stick shift bus to Pally for a Stammers pie or pastie
back on another old Leyland bus to Freo
help sell a Budget at the Gaol gate and get a pew at the scoreboard free
used to get near the race for a sneaky signature from Basil & TI
or managed to witness Magic pummel Laurie’s hands for a few precious minutes
with Benny watching on for his turn
Saw Malcolm cajole the boys and then Basil stoke the fire afterwards
went to Freo hospital to see Basil & Peakey with their broken bones from that Derby stoush
was at that 23000 plus derby under the scoreboard clock on the fence just to see anything
1980 I sat in awe of Maurice Rioli , Benny Vigona , Wayne Delmenico , Joe McKay & TI and slicing apart a good Swan Districts side - old Subiaco Oval style
was at the John Todd inspired 1997 Derby comeback premiership - I think all of us had tears near the box , it was remarkable just remarkable thank christ I went along with that upset hunch I had all week
vaguely remember Malcolm take on most of the Swan Districts backline by himself I think in 1977 at Bassendean - my Gran took me on the train when I was pretty young ,she tried to cover my eyes but I saw heaps , maybe too much heaps
But I loved Brownie geez pretty much all of South Freo had an affair with Malcolm at some point in history
Was at East Fremantle Oval in 1988 when Stanley drew that big fat line in the sand and said no more losing to East farking Fremantle - we smashed them by 80 odd points , Mark Bayliss , Richard Geary & Peter Sumich starred that day
Went to the last round of 1981 versus West Perth at Fremantle Oval - saw one of the most lethal savage displays of league footy ever witnessed in this state 40.18 258 and Carter getting 11 of his own and Magic just ridiculously sublime just another 3 levels good
Going back to school and getting smudged against the fountain every time the derby went the other way but geez I knew it would be on the other foot next time and I’d be wiping my fingers in their lunchboxes and they never knew just never ever knew where my fingers had been the bastards farken gold worth every bash against the taps twicefold
But that’s WANFL footy

There was something special about those Stammers pies, but I got mine from the Beaconsfield Store, only downer is the entire family where and still are mad Old Easts fans.

Going to the 73 Grand Final as a teenager and witnessing the bomb scare which had everyone in the social club evacuated. Putting a huge maroon and gold flag which mum made up on the roof of our house after we won, which wasn’t a smart move given we lived in White Gum Valley which was pretty close to the heart of South Freo country.
Running onto the oval when the final siren sounded and giving the same flag to Ocker as they were doing a victory lap which I later found outside the change rooms. Any Subi diehard with a copy of the 73 GF can see me running across the oval at the very end of the recording which amused my daughter no end when she saw it as I was a surfie back then with long blonde hair.
Watching Reggie Hampson run out on the ground at the start of the game only to go across to the boundary and have a spew…obviously he’d had a big night.
Sitting next to the fence at Subi Oval against Perth when there was a dust up right in front of us and Perth and Subi players were engaged in a bit of biffo. One Perth player was pushed up against the fence where we were, and my aunty Joy pressed her lit cigarette into his arm. He called her “a bitch” and she said she hoped “gangrene sets in”. Today she would have been charged with assault but back then…ahh, the good old days.

Too true Guru. I used to take my 2 boys and daughter to Subi games every week. As they got older the two boys dropped off, but my daughter still comes with me even though she’s about to turn 40 next Saturday.
How the heck did a WG Valley boy end up supporting Subiaco…?
Same with my son, not the slightest bit interested in WAFL. The family tradition with South that started about 1920, ends with me.
Dad grew up in Subi and used to carry the player’s kit bags to get in for free. Mum didn’t follow footy until she met the old man and finished a stauncher Subi supporter than all of us.
Not sure South Supporters would have been too fussed about West Perth getting knocked off,by a Club that’s Won it’s 1st League in 49 years.
Subiaco supporters like spotting a unicorn if Fremantle. I meet a West Perth bloke once.
Some great memories here, I remember listening to John Rogers on the radio for Football team selections on Thursday night and every team had a half hour club show on Saturday morning where we could keep up to date with team news. Frank Sparrow was the voice of football when I was growing up. World of Football on Sundays was always entertaining as well.
BC Mike do u remember the game in 1979 at Bassendean oval when swans kicked 40 goals and subiaco kicked 20. Is still our biggest score ever. Mark Olsen kicked 13 i think and Gary Buckanarra kicked 9.1 swans finished the second last and suby were last.

We finished 5th in 1979 Guru, won our last 5 games that year including that 40 goal performance and then won the first 13 games in 1980 (18 in a row).

Yep I was there Guru. An incredible game of footy. Both teams just completely put defence to one side and attacked all day.

I think the teams that finished 1 - 4 were very thankful Swans didn’t make the finals in 1979 BH. I reckon we were playing so well that we would have given the flag a shake that year. We did beat South Freo, who ended up playing in the Grand Final, by about 10 goals in that run of 5 wins
