Firstly the Eagles hijack WA Day
Freo derby is moved to Sunday and gets only half the crowd they would normally get on the Monday.
Perth Derby crowd is down by approximately 2k
Eagles play on WA day and get smashed.
How is this good for WA football Trevor?
Probably 8K less people attended WAFL which would normally attend.
Eagles got their standard crowd so got nothing out of playing on the day.
Yet this is good for WA football Trevor?
I am an 18 year member of the Eagles, I boycotted the match yesterday, I went to the Perth Derby and then went home to watch the Eagles. My two seats sat empty and I was happy to do that.
I reckon the eagles fixture was a flop, they achieved nothing, infact the start time on the monday of 5.30pm is crap, most people have work the next day get the kids ready for school and last thing they feel like dragging along to subi oval, also in the east its a work day and everyone has switched off the footy on a monday night so the ratings are crap.
its been a huge hit for the WAFL, EFFC would be about $20K out of pocket with 3000 or 4000 people not there, and likewise for the other games and clubs ..its a bloody disgrace and totally un called for by the eagles.
You watch next year they will fixture earlier and probably play the dockers.
Only takes someone with the wealth to start a rival competition for a rival TV coverage. A competition like the twenty twenty cricket but for Aussie Rules
and then they will show the games when it suits them also..though that will never happen..the AFL is too smart for that..
also cricket is a global game, unlike the AFL..
Richmond not a power house!!!How do you work that out. They have a very strong supporter base all over the country. They may be a bit fickle from time to time but they always return to follow the Yellow and Black.
it is a pipe dream I thin k to think that there will be someone who will come in and try to start up a league in opposition tot he AFL as it is now.It won’t happen in our time.
It was totally wrong for the AFL to place a game in direct opposition to the foundation games.
I have no doubt at all Anchorman that if the AFL continue to change the rules it will get to the point the game is not recognisable, christ they are not far from that now.
Now maybe it won’t be a breakaway league but I think a huge revolt will take place at some point in the future. Maybe 10 years away, maybe sooner or even later but I have no doubt at some point someone with the money will ask what happened to that great sport called Aussie Rules football?
Give me a few billion dollars and I would do it this afternoon.
If I had the unlimited money I would start instigate a breakaway league.
Like you say money can do anything.
But while we are on hypotheticals, lets say I did create the champions league, formed out of initially the 7 non aligned AFL clubs in the WAFL, the 8 Clubs minus Port in the SANFL and the 4 non aligned clubs in the VFL and through 5 billion dollars at it, 15 million dollar salary caps in it etc. Are you seriously telling me I would not be able to attract players from the AFL to come play in it? You think sposors would not jumpo on board? You think TV would not want to televise it?
Money can do anything you want it to do.
The AFL would be begging for compromise within one day mate.
I agree GWS,the game is changing far too fast an not into the game we once knew.
I do not have answers but I know it is so different.
Maybe you should approach Gina and ask her to fron the new concept. How many people do you know that have a spare $5bil!!!Would they be prepared to pump it into a maybe competition!!
look what happened when the two big boys got involved with Rugby league. What a schmozzle they made of that.It has still not recovered properly.
you could only recruit uncontracted players
you would have to build your own stadiums as the AFL have contracts with all the current venues
tv wont pay you for a 2nd rate comp…
bs mate , not in the same league as collingwood ,essendon or even wce or the crows. they have done sweet fa for years. not that long ago they were looking at folding and going bust.
wont have to worry about that mate, the GWS exeperiment will send them broke, I can see a break away league forming , just like it did with the EPL, Pay TV will set up its own league, tell the clubs they can piss off the salary cap and all the other rules and all the cashed up super clubs will go over quick smart. I reckon about 8 clubs would do it for a naional suuper league,
I like to dream too mate, but honestly the WAFL and SANFL have bugger all chance of forming anything like that, if there is a break away league it will be made up of current AFL clubs, just like world series cricket and EPL.
