Cold hard facts

To supporters from other clubs who think we should stop bringing up zones, here are some stats that lay our predicament bare.

First consecutive finals campaigns in 48 years

Equal highest finish in 48 years ( Have not finished top 2 since 1978)

First double chance in 48 years

Depending on results First final at Lathlain

so what’s changed over the last couple of seasons…here’s a hint, the answer isn’t a change of your zone.

I don’t know…could it be the commission finally accepted our rough deal and gave us some concessions? Due in part to clubs like yours refusing to part with any of your zone areas.

What’s changed is what that plonker Townsend keeps banging on about. Competitive balance policy has allowed us to recruit top end talent we don’t get coming through our own zones like yours. I see you’ve promoted a couple of 17/18 year olds to the league side and are instantly dominating.

Without those concessions we would be last.

And from what I hear Ian Callaghan has been piss weak allowing the silver spoons to force him to back away from what he said when he first stepped into the role of WAFC chair. He said there could be zone changes to help out the likes of Perth, West Perth as soon as the middle of last season. Since then heard only tinkering or none at all. Nothing to see here. You just can’t make this suit up the evidence is f#cking overwhelming.

The competitive balance measures were introduced for the 2020 season.

They reduced the better performing clubs points caps from 120 to 100 points (Claremont, Subiaco, South Fremantle and West Perth)

Peel Thunder was reduced to 80 points and West Coast 50 points.

Lower placed clubs received an allocation above 100 points to improve their competitiveness. Perth 110, East Fremantle 120, Swan Districts 120, East Perth 125.

Interstate recruits were also limited from 7 to 6 per club.

The competitive balance measures weren’t introduced to balance out your perceived zone imbalances, they were introduced to limit interstate recruitment and talented players moving from an underperforming club to a successful WAFL club.

It was an anti-Subi success rule, and by your own repeated bleeting Subi apparently had too much money and were paying outside of the salary cap despite never being found guilty unlike several other clubs.

…

“We have been clear that we do not want to implement measures that mean Subiaco will have to cut players from their list and tear at the fabric of the club. At the same time, we have considered options that would limit Subiaco from continuing to add out-of-zone recruits to their list, as a way of allowing other clubs to close the gap,” Scott Baker WAFC Operations Manager said.

Specific recruiting rules will be applied to Subiaco Football Club for 2020 allowing the club to retain or replace current players, but not recruit additional players that are above one (1) point in value, according to the WAFL Rules and Regulations.

“We believe these measures will help spread the available talent amongst all WAFL clubs and contribute to competitive balance, while also supporting the foundation of the WAFL competition being built on developing and recruiting talent from local Districts.”

But anyone with half a club knows the player Points Cap that only restricts the your total squad doesn’t work as you can still stack your League side with interstate and non-zone players as long as you only play 1 point players in your Ressies.

So try again on why your last two seasons have been successful…because the the 5 seasons prior, when the competitive balance measures were put in place for 2020 and gave your club a leg up saw the same results as the 40 years prior

As a matter of interest how many points does your senior squad use..I’m guessing 90 percent are 1 point players yeah?

That is a huge competitive advantage right there..no re location costs, no recruits wanting to return home..no having to scour the country for decent recruits.

Claremont has featured in around 45 colts finals series since 78 that is a pattern that is due to an obvious advantage.

Can you honestly say that if we swapped zones and allowed say 5 years for it to bed in, that Claremont would still have no need for recruits and finish in the finals most years and Perth would continue to have few final series?

Colts success does not correlate to League success. Never has and never will.

It’s great to see Melody and Gale play League footy this season but they won’t play League for us next year or the year after and may never play League footy at Claremont again.

There’s only about 2-3 undrafted colts each season who gone on to play WAFL League in their senior career. This is consistent across nearly every club including clubs with similar zones to Perth.

Perths issue has always been retention of their talented players. Go have a look a Trinity Aquinas and Curtins lists over the last decade or so and you’ll see how many Perth players feature who were WAFL League quality including ex-AFL listed players but chose to play elsewhere.

Yes Claremont has a very high percentage of local zone players with a few non-zoned players but we’ve retained a core group over many seasons and when you look at how many players graduate from colts and actually play league footy we don’t have better numbers than most clubs.

We probaly should recruit more interstate and out of zone local players like other clubs. Might have won more League flags if we had.

What are the Tiger’s recruiting numbers in the last ten years? Would be interesting to know. Hunter stands out this year. Do they recruit less? Feels like it. They do lose more to the drafts than other clubs.

The great Perth v Claremont zone debate rolls on.

There’s no doubt Subi are better this year thanks to recruiting Blight, Girolami, Noah HH and Miller towards the end of the season- but also some player development.

The WAFL is a recruiting game. Claremont probably need to recruit more but I reckon they need to less than other clubs. I’d say ditto for East Freo, and Peel, obviously.

Interesting point TT about Colts to league transition numbers

I’m staying out of this one this time.

Aside of it all,I’m sure The Club is constantly working our current Zones, identifying new talent(I’ve spotted a potential new cult talent, but I’ll leave him alone to just be a kid for now),whilst keeping a competitive list together, evolving into something Real Good,we hope!

Well going back 5 or 6 years ago Garry Moss was coach and Trevor Williams our manager or maybe even Dale Ballantyne who took Cody Leggett off the list for 24 hours. A lot of changes have occurred off the field since then, new prez, a couple of CEO’s and 2 big name coaches. This combined has lifted the profile of the club and attracted better quality coaches and one of the best footy managers. Build it and they’ll come is the saying and this is what has occurred. Peter German was a big turning point. Unfortunately for him timing is everything and he didn’t have any luck.

But still our depth is weak so we rely more heavily on outside recruits more than any other club. Not sure what happens next year having finished 4th and so far 3rd this year. I imagine we can’t add but only replace anyone who leaves.

The number of colts graduating to senior lists is relatively low each season at every WAFL club, most clubs would only have 6-10 take the step up.

Have a look at the under 25s on your team list from yesterday’s match and there’s only 2 possibly 3 home grown players who graduated from colts in the same year.

Petrucelle another out of zone recruit that was a good get for Subi.

40 plus years and finally the penny might have dropped at Perth.

New President and Board that seem happy to spend money on the footy department…ground breaking thinking that a footy club might need to spend money on the reason they exist.

New Coaches - Senior and assistant coaches that have profile and experience - coaches that drive high standards and who players want to play for.

New Football Manager and Talent Development Officer - great football networks, proven recruiting history and junior talent identification.

New Fitness and Physio - better prepared squad for the rigours of the season.

You’re changing the culture of your football club in a positive direction.

It’s not rocket science

Oh and still the same zone.

Just need a new facility now but the ToVP is inept and has screwed Perth over.

What is your spend per season? I imagine the lowest of the traditional clubs because you don’t have to recruit. Prescott said this in pre season. Would be an absolute waste of money having a Phil Smart or Brad Dodd at Davies Rd. They’d be playing solitaire all day. You’d probably have to buy them a new mouse every 3 months.

Phil Smart was at Claremont, went to Freo with Gerard Neesham.

We’d pay close to the full allowed salary cap, players deserve to be remunerated for their efforts regardless of where they come from.

Costs us significantly more to service our country zones in the Great Southern and Kimberley than Perths short drive out to Toodyay Northam etc

And Im sure we could put more time into our interstate recruitment given we haven’t had too many recently.

TT it is okay to spend money if you have it.

We are a Club that is not based in an affluent Western Suburbs location.

For the last 26 years the Perth Football Club have been very prudent in their financial management making very few losses in that time.

That has meant “not spending” heaps of money on recruits. In other words prudent budgets, which meant stringent management of the football dept.

You need A Grade players in your team and in the past we have had maybe one, the rest whatever we could pick up. And the A Graders stayed for 2 years and left. Or like a couple of them stolen by other clubs that have seemed to prey on us.

At last, we have some financial stability and a safety net.

At one stage Subi e.g. had an annual turnover of somewhere around $4.5m, the same year ours was $2.5m. Thank christ for Optus Stadium which stopped that farce. Surprisingly their football budget seemed awfully like ours. Yet they managed a profit of of a mere $300,000 odd from memory. You look through the premiership team and shake your heads. The answer from Subi, they play for the love of the Club.

I am pretty sure that Claremont have had some benefactors over the years.

And don’t kid yourselves about your Colts program.

The numbers of players available to you are mind boggling, considering the numbers unavailable to you at times because of the Alcock Cup.

You know you have an advantage or else you are blind or stupid.

What are you saying DF? If you have evidence Subi was cheating, then put it out there and let’s see where it takes us. If not, then shut the f*ck up given my club has never been penalised for breaching the salary cap which is more than I can say for yours.

What I am saying is it is a mystery where money goes at times.

Not accusing you of anything because your books are always open. lol

Anyway my post was not about you.

BTW the Perth Football Club have never breached the salary cap.

Some accounting errors yes and stupidly fined instead of counselled.

Salary cap breaches are blatant bending of the rules.

Which, Perth football Club has never done, simply because we have never had the resources.
