SANFL Reserves Axed

Great decision

no need for 23 plus year old players

just make them disappear somewhere

Nah I think Brad Wira was asked about a month ago he said he doesn’t see our reserves going anywhere. SANFL had to due to financial pressure caused by some minimum pay conditions over there. Mind you if footballers bandied together over here and through a union demanded minimum pay then everything changes.

Adelaide Football League and the SA Country comps will all benefit

The SANFL’s historic reserves competition is changing for the better.

That is the overriding view of the eight standalone SANFL clubs following the league’s decision to introduce age restrictions to the competition for the first time in its 150-year history.

From next season – when the SANFL will proudly celebrate its 150th anniversary – the reserves will become primarily an under-23 competition.

But there will be some exceptions, with each club expected to be allowed between four-to-six overage players, giving clubs more control over their playing lists.

They will also be able to seek permits for “special circumstances’’, such as league players returning from long-term injury.

The finer details of the remodelled second-tier competition are still to be worked through but the league is planning to find it a naming rights sponsor and boost its profile as a standout development league, which will have a stronger presence and attract greater public support.

Added are the recent announcements that the crows and power will play VLR reserves and not SANFL in the future (I think that’s the following year)

Those 2 can’t P*ss off from the SANFL Quick enough.

Same applies here!

The WAFL Reserves is primarily an under 23 comp now…

No need to AXE it though.

there was talk of axing the reserves or making it purely under 23’s 20 odd years ago so this isnt a new initiative

Or genius administrative thought bubble!

will happen
