Perth 2025

No one thinks Thompson and Avery are A graders. Wouldn’t even make the 2nd State team. Given your likely -12, Stone and Dodd will be mad not to look at the kids more closely to see if they’re up to it. We’ll take Byrne and Constable- who are A graders….

Thompson and Avery were hampered by injury in 2024, but they finished 1 and 2 in our F & B in 2023. There can be a tendency to overrate players when you see them play regularly, but I find it impossible to accept that Perth’s two best players last season would not be in EF best 22. If that is the case, then the disparity between WAFL teams is worse than I thought and so wide that it can never be rectified.

And we have no kids who are worth looking at. The few who had exposure to league footy last year - Cachard, Hine-Baston, Moore, Watson, Wills - may develop in a couple of years, but I don’t rate the prospects of any this year’s colts graduates. This is the way it is: we recruit players from interstate at great expense who stay for a couple of years at best. We pick off fringe players from other clubs and when, like Avery, they show something, they get pinched by a rival club. Demoralising doesn’t begin to describe it.

If the rumours about Randall are true, then he’s a good replacement for Thompson. Numbers the same and Randall competing against Brayshaw, Crowden and Schumacher for the footy- you’d think his numbers go up. Williams is an unknown- haven’t seen much of him. I watched both EF v Perth games this season and walked away from both thinking Perth could’ve won (and should’ve won one of them). I would be giving the new regime some time- though the -12 is a bit of a blow for next season- and potentially more if players walk.
The Sharks have had a dozen leave and replaced them with Avery and Strnadica. We’re significantly weakened on 2024 at the moment.

Crowden and Schumacher are no longer at East Perth so Randall would not be competing against them.
In addition, if Randall is set on leaving East Perth, then they would be well within their rights to expect a refund of the legal fees outlaid on him.
Would Perth (or any other Club) be prepared to do this plus pay a standard transfer fee?

So Perth fans need to be patient while the “new regime” implements our 17th consecutive 3 year plan. Fair enough.

Don’t worry Ted, just wait until our club displaces Claremont as the 4th highest number of players drafted in Australia as I saw last night. And I’m pretty sure that was before Will Hayes got picked with Collingwood’s last pick so they probably jumped to equal second. Behind Sandringham Dragons.

No doubt those green shoots in our zones will start bearing fruit soon.

Tend to agree KC, suits the profile we need and probably a like for like with Thompson. Let’s hope he can claim a Butcher Medal in his first season at the Demons like Charlie Thompson did. Hopefully cleared soon we could do with some good news before Chrissy.

Yes, and losing that many players to the draft will have no impact whatsoever on Claremont’s prospects next season or thereafter. The travelator from Christchurch and Scotch to the gates of Claremont Oval will keep depositing ready made players. We had, what, zero players drafted? 1 in 2023, 1 in 2022 MSD and none in 2021. Apparently the talent is there, we just need to work harder. For nearly 50 years, it hasn’t occurred to a single president, coach, footy manager or board member to work hard.

We can scrub Brady Grey off the wish list. He’ll be playing for Collingwood in the VFL and be their Indigenous liaison officer.

With Russell Clark now gone, I wonder if Trevor Williams knew what was coming and maybe jumped before he was pushed.

I wonder if Brad Dodd and Mark Stone knew what they were walking in to.

Mark Stone knew. I don’t know about your mate.

Russell officially gone. I feel bad for him. Hope he is all right financially.

Yes read into that what you will. I think bad news is coming our way and imminent and our CEO has fallen on his sword. Hopefully the next CEO is a good one no captains picks or purple circle favourites.

And preferably someone highly skilled in the accounting side of things.

DD, I know I only see Perth a couple of times a year, but it has always struck me that that you have enough B and C grade players and just need those one or two A graders to push you further up the ladder.

Your colts and reserves have at time struggled but then they win a flag or play for one which seems like there are players coming through but fall through the racks.

Do you think it is the old proverbial cultural issue at the club or is it the management which lets you down. I know you will say it is the district and zone but looking passed that what needs to happen.

I believe IMHO it is a number of things.
Grump, you are right, I think we lack skills in successfully bringing our good young talent through to successful league careers.
We don’t recruit wisely, using points to buy reserves players is not a successful strategy.
I’m not sure we have the talent in the Club, to successfully identify potential in recruits.
We allow our recruiting strategy to revolve around DUDS walking in through the door because they can’t get a game anywhere else.
Not utilising Salary Cap or points wisely.
Not sure we have ever spent anywhere near our full Salary Cap.
This latest debacle is called out when as far as I am aware we have not spent our full Salary Cap let alone exceeded it.

Jackson Broadbent has landed on our list. Hardly set the world on fire at SF after they won the tug-o-war over him a couple years back.

Broadbent, huh? What was that DF was just saying about other clubs’ duds? I guess he’s a better back up ruck on paper than that former EF guy. But do we intend to recruit any league quality players at all?

Was listed as “personal leave” most of the season on SF injury list. From down Mandurah way could be further south. Maybe he has moved to the big smoke for work. Hope so because can’t see him making the commute every day to train and play an hour plus away. Hopefully maturing and ready to make the commitment. That’s all we can hope for.

Apparently Randall has applied for a clearance and maybe Culley in the frame pending an invitation to train with an AFL club.
