Geez feeling really really old right now…Wattsy has sadly passed away aged 80…remember the banter this fella had with all n sundry growing up as kid…definitely from the old school and one of a kind was our fella JK
Wattsie was a legend Freeze not only had a great playing career (Premiership player in the WAFL x3, VFL & TFL, 200+ games) but had a very successful career in the media after he retired from footy on radio & TV.
He was a great storyteller and very funny man with his joke telling.
Also wrote the club songs for Swan Districts, East Perth & Geelong.
What a Character JKW was.Had the Pleasure of meeting JKW at the Mayland hotel in the 90’s.An Aussie Legond, fantastic footballer and great media personality. RIP JKW.
He was an entertainer who, as well as his footy exploits, hosted a high rating breakfast radio program for many years in the 70’s with Barry Martin. RIP Wattsie
Farewell Wattsie you funny bastard
Yep,sad to learn of his Passing.
An East Perth Great and an even bigger Great on Radio, whether it was Breakfast Radio or Football Commentary, with a great wit to boot.
Also A Co Host of 6PR’s Football World with Brian Thirley at Lunchtime, with a Multitude of Panellists, with one regular being Bob Cribb.A Regular Award handed out was Dorf Drip of The Week, which brought plenty of laughs to end the Program.Think Wattsie even nominated himself once or twice.
RIP John K Watts.
Ahhhh Wattsie … champion you were one of a kind , and a big part of my early days either on the telly or radio
Bloody have to admit I’m shocked we don’t have you with us anymore
I mean we had fine blokes like JK , Spud Slater , George Grjilla , Jack Sweet , Joe Fanchi , Frank Sparrow , John Dethridge , Les Mumme , Perce , John Rogers , Frank Woods , Bob Miller , Mick Cronin , Art Marshall , Bruce Walker calling - how good is that
Christ what a sad day for WA Football
Rest easy Wattsie you’ll be remembered forever
Sad indeed. Many great memories of an era long gone. More recently in the mid 90’s I made the mistake of heckling him at a function in a Busselton pub (I made a joke about east Perth) and he paid out on me relentlessly for the rest of the day! Great fun
RIP Wattsy…and remember “watch yer buccneers”!!!
RIP JK, legend of the '63 cats premiership
A great John K Watts joke -
“Today there is some good news and some bad news” “The bad news first is the Arabs have landed on the moon”
" And the good news is - they’re all there"
Pretty apt on this tragic day too
Bring back the politically incorrect days I say, where people could laugh at each other and themselves and not get offended, we are poorer for it as a society that we can’t do that now hence the shape the joint is in now I reckon
Well said SD.
A couple of other JKW classic quips over the years were-
When asked who was the best player he had ever seen play was he remarked-
“I look at him every morning in the mirror when I have a shave”
“The best thing to ever come out of Fremantle was the Stirling Hwy”
“I was so good a player blind people used to come to EP training just to hear me kick”
His greatest regret from his footy career was-
“Not being able to sit in the grandstand every week to watch myself play” ![]()

Can anyone put up the words to Shaving Cream?
There’s only two types of players son, those that played for east Perth and those that wished they did…
Great memories of JK Watts aka “Wattsie”. So many to be honest where do you start? Wattsie was everywhere. As a kid growing up in the 70’s I remember him on Channel 7 on a Friday night I think it was at the end of the sport where he would give a wrap and his tips for the weekend in a most colourful way and finish with a thumbs up and “See ya folks”
Then there was the Friday football show (what was it called?) that would be played on 6PM at about 8am on Saturday morning. That was a non negotiable to start my weekend and I was pissed off if I woke up late and missed it.
Later as a young adult I would go to those football forums on a Friday lunchtime at the Cascades Tavern in Maylands (didn’t know at the time it was owned by JK himself. And of course that show would move around to other venues and football clubs. He entertained everyone and the old girls with the blue rinse loved him.
Then there was Wattsie and Martin who practically invented entertaining breakfast radio. Who can forget Billy Coke Bottle who used to be a regular on the Watts and Martin show? It was an absolute scream and sadly the young ones today are missing out because they are sanitised from that type of humour and I reckon our Aboriginals laughed as much as we did.
He was one of a kind John K Watts and there will never be another. Thank you for your entertainment you provided me as kid and young adult. Rest in Peace Wattsie!
A photo of Wattsie at a function when my brother Fred was sick.
A legend of not just WA football, but a West Australian legend.Rest peacefully Wattsie.
A couple of photos from an auction and function held for my brother Fred when he was diagnosed with a brain tumour.
Thanks Wattsie. Rest peacefully.
