Sheffield Shield resumes

Disappointing drop off by the Warriors after that 119 opening stand. Lost 5 - 64 from there. Bancroft certainly did his test prospects no harm by batting through the day for 73, lets hope he can covert that to 100+ tomorrow.

Other test aspirants had mixed days
Renshaw 29
Burns 60 and
Labuschagne 59 out of 4 - 308 by Queensland
Siddle 0-56 and Tremain 1 - 70 for the Vics
Travis Head 50 for SA ( although he is not in doubt for the ashes tour)
Jackson Bird 4 -53 to keep him in the frame

Mike I am not sure if you saw Cartwright’s dismissal but it was utterly disgraceful, playing a premeditated reverse sweep to SOK that was pitched miles outside his leg stump in his normal batting position, as you can imagine it went straight up in the air and was caught by bat pad.
Regardless of being interim Captain the bloke should be dropped for the rest of the year for that absolute rubbish!

Hard to Imagine that Cartwright was in the test team a few years ago. If Mitch Marsh is fit for the next game, Cartwright would seem to be the obvious one to go out. On a positive note, good to see Sam Whiteman making a 50, I have always rated him as a batsman.

Cam Bancroft has definitely put his hand up here…though I see Harris is getting a few v the Bulls…Matty Wade also scored a few at 4…tho really needs a big score or two to sway JL I reckon…lots of prospective batters scoring runs…but reckon a big score or two will drag a few into JL ashes squad.

Great weekend for batsmen, Patterson trumped Bancrofts century, to be fair though they are not competing for the same spot. You would figure that WA need an encore performance from Cam tomorrow to save the NSW game. The rest of the Warriors batting line up looks very flimsy, you would hope that the captain will not try a premediated reverse sweep tomorrow given the situation.
In other games we saw Burns, Harris, Head and Wade scoring runs and we saw the debut of a 27 year old for Tasmania, Charlie Wakim, who scored a lazy 160! Must think the game is a doddle.

He’s got a good name for a batman, hasn’t he? WAKIM.

Looks like the Cam Bancroft one man show had come to an end…gonna be interesting over the next few months with Bancroft, Harris, Burns all fighting for the other openers berth…could be interesting also if Renshaw scores big over in the UK on his county stint

Lets get this in perspective. Bancroft scored 224 out of the 426 runs scored by WA in this match. If you take out Whitemans 64 on the first day, the rest of the batting scored 138 runs over the 2 innings. From the point of being 0 -119 in their first innings, WA lost 20 wickets for 307 whilst NSW scored 8 - 477 on the same pitch. This was not just an average innings defeat, it was a complete and utter surrender by this team. Surely this would have to be the rock bottom? I don’t think it is any excuse to point to the "inexperience"of the team. There was absolutely no fight and selectors cannot tolerate these sorts of performances any more. Cartwrights two dismissals in this game were embarrassing to say the least and continuing to select him while he is so bereft of form and confidence is doing him and WA a disservice.

No excuses for mine Mike yes we were under-strength but lets face it NSW also were missing their first choice bowling line up- Starc, Hazlewood, Cummins & Lyon plus Smith & Warner etc.
If WA are going to be successful ever again in the Sheffield Shield then major changes are needed asap starting at the top for mine!

I just had another look at Cartwrights 2nd innings dismissal and it was unlucky as it spooned up off the close fielders helmet. When you are out of form these things happen.

An amazing round of Sheffield Shield cricket.
I enjoy the Big Bash but am far more interested in the Shield.
A great effort by Cam Bancroft to score 224 of WA’s 426 runs in 218.2 overs (1.95 runs per over), but the Blues were pretty impressive.
A brave declaration by Queensland that backfired against the Vics, with the Bulls’ decision obviously based on the fact that NSW (and to a lesser extent, Tas) were on their way to victory.
The Shield’s long-time underachievers SA lost 6-3 to gift Tassie a win after looking like they’d escape with a draw.
Shield Team of the Week: C Bancroft, M Harris, J Weatherald, C Wakim, N Maddinson, K Patterson, P Neville, S O’Keefe, T Copeland, J Bird, M Swepson, J Burns (12th).
A bit short on bowling options, but understandable since it was a batsman’s round.

a good thread lads. Cartwright is not out of form is just not a first-class batsman. Why is a Rhodesian captain of WA? Tony Lock was a proven test cricketer when he came over, at a time too, when our cricket stocks were relatively weak. How many other foreigners have led Shield sides?

Johan Botha

That went well too.

I would say the same about Inglis, whom, I believe was born in the old country.

I suppose the difference with Cartwright against Lock and Botha is that the former has played Test cricket for Australia, Ark.
Although there’s been the occasional overseas import in the Sheffield Shield - including Garry Sobers, Viv Richards, Rohan Kanhai, Joel Garner, Imran Khan, Younis Khan, Rusi Surti, Ian Botham, Colin Milburn and Vic Marks - I don’t know of any who captained a Shield side other than the players you mentioned.
Botha was on a hiding to nothing with the Redbacks, who are but a shadow of the side they were when Ian Chappell captained them.

AD: I agree – I think heneriques might have been born in Portugal so there is another one to mention. As we know, the problem with WA is a combination of ethos and talent on the cricket field. Vic Marks wrote about playing for WA and he stressed that there was a test outlook about it within the team and they were expected to win.

Years ago our players played 10 tests, plus a few more each season if they performmed well and were picked in the national side. Now, it is just hit and giggle – Why would players care when you can average 25 over a number of Shield seasons and still get picked in our ‘top six’?

This is the weakest batting line up I have seen in the Shield since Tasmania’s side in the early 1980s, and that may be being harsh on Tasmania, as their side did include B F Davison – a great Rhodesian player – and Roger Wolley, whom could bat a bit.

Not to mention a talented teenager from Launceston in David Clarence Boon AR!

With WA playing SA at the WACA this weekend, it is time for Voges to introduce some more young guys into the squad to give them a taste of first class cricket. I’m talking about guys like Carder, Hinchcliffe and David who are the future so why not give them a go in the last 3 games of a season that is now done and dusted.

BH: yep, good player DC Boon, even then as a very young man.

BF Davison 5 10 0 697 173 69.70 4 2 0
(Tasmania)

DC Boon 5 10 0 428 114 42.80 1 2 0
(Tasmania)

from 1980-81 Shield season.

The last 3 rounds of Sheffield Shield cricket will be fascinating to watch the batting efforts of Harris, Burns and Bancroft for probably one openers spot in the Ashes team, assuming of course that Warner gets back in the team. Harris will probably have the advantage of playing in the Shield final whereas the other two are unlikely to.

Interesting to hear Paine says runs in the latter part of the season v the Dukes ball isn’t the be all or end all for Ashes selection…apparently the Aussie Duke is different from the English Duke…so who knows what G&T and JL will do…

That was a great cricket season 80/81 AR.
Brian Davison was a very talented batsman I remember him leading Tassie as a kid.
