Rejects that have been good value and ones that ......... not just Vic's

Leedy and I had a little discussion abt players who seek greener pastures and prove useful and I thought it would be a good diversion, also ones that well perhaps needed a third or fourth club. Be Nice and no Leggett crap!

EP have had a few of the first lot - Turnbull (and yes I know it was a WCE decision but …)
Stephen Hooper, Josh Smith, and now Rohan Kerr.

Of the others well there was Calyton Lewis who at the time became the highest priced reserves player in WAFL history.

Bryce Forman, Ian Newman, Stephen Lally and Scott Spalding were more then handy sorts for EF…Paul Mountain and Paul Vasoli for SF…Hetherington and Broadbridge for SD as well…no doubt Bease will have a shed load more in his WAFL memory vault.

Did Chris Pobjoy not try out at Souths before moving to Moss Street. Does Liam Ryan qualify? Leigh Brenton moved to Swans from East Freo and played in the 83 premiership and in the famous state win at Football Park in 84. Did Mark Watson not play at Claremont before going to Lathlain and winning a Sandover?

Depends on your terming of the word ‘rejects’ I suppose Freeze?
For example Gerard Neesham wasnt wanted by EF after playing water polo in 1978 so I guess he would fall into that category and thus would be the best one I have seen at SD in my time, he also enticed Tony Solin along as well who he was playing with up in Darwin.
We have picked up some decent players from other clubs like Mick Johns (mid season), Leigh Brenton (mid season), Len Gandini (mid season) etc that were not getting a regular game for their clubs so I suppose they could also fall into that category.
In more recent times Craig DeCorsey was a pretty handy pick up from Claremont, Matt Rogers from Perth whilst Kyle Hams had left SF for Busselton and was then recruited to SD but I doubt whether you could call him a reject.

Less successful at Swans were Chris Allen (EP) & Wayne Simms (P) (who could barely get on the park), Paul Vasoli (only lasted about 6 games) & Brett Farmer (all of 2 games)!

Freezin, those Perth guys you mentioned were not rejects. They were traitors. There’s a difference. For Perth, Tropiano and Seebeck came to us after not getting a game at their original clubs, and each won a Sandover. Otherwise, we have picked up many rejects over the years, too many to name. Most have been crap, some have been handy. Our current team reflects that: Giblett has been good, Payne and Coniglio have been handy, Dennis has been ordinary, Martin will never make it.

Sokol, Fimmano and to a lesser extent Matera…all in this weeks side

Watched Stephen Hooper in a practice match in 1986 at Claremont.. He was huge & nothing else. Later drafted to Geelong & he was huge & nothing else. Went back to Subi & he was huge & nothing else.. Clayton Lewis played in Sth Bunbury,s undefeated premiership side in 1985. Good but not a match winner.

Great topic Grump. I can’t recall but I suspect Mick “Stinger” Rea was not getting a league game or as a regular so sought greener pastures at Perth. We had a great run with WP players who I suspect were on the outer for one reason or another, John Washfold, Ross Prunster and Joe Proctor.

Tony Pappoto from East Perth I wouldn’t call Watson a reject from Claremont, pretty sure he played in their 1981 premiership, as Ted mentioned Tropiano and Seebeck definitely fall under the reject category and go bang and win a Sandover the ultimate individual success, sadly it didn’t translate into team success.

A player we got from EF in the early 2000’s was very good, one of my favourites at the time Matt Kennewell I think was his name. A real bull and could hold down CHB or CHF.

Mark Washfold DD.
John Gavranich, Chris Stasinowsky (via SF) & Ray Holden were a few other handy players you blokes got from WP.

Mick Moylan , Craig Edwards , David Hart , John MacDonald , Kris Miller , The three Wilson Brothers

Willie Roe was a good pick up from EP (via Darwin) Southy, an underrated player in the 80s.
John Begg, Geoff Gillies, John Hayes, Barrie Quick, Neil Randall, David Rawlinson, Paul Vasoli a few others.

In more recent times I thought Peter Kelly, Evan Hewitt & Ryan Webb were good pick ups.

Those Subi boys weren’t rejects Beas…

Some of the names being thrown up are really great, just shows that sometimes a new environment can allow a play to continue or just start.

Ryan Webb is one that can always recall at WP, amongst the trainers at EP we always reckon he was more likely to kick it to the opposition than WP player but when he went to SF (I think) was a much better player.

Strempl at Swans along with Spanderman where interesting players, perhaps I recall them for their off field exploits rather their football at Swans.

Neesham, Melrose are to great swaps.

Yeah come to think of it neither was Kelly DG, back when Cicco was doing some of his best work with those brown paper bags haha.

His name was mentioned last weekend at the 1990 Premiership reunion Grump.
Apparently Toddy sacked him on the spot leading into the Finals that year due to being late to Sunday morning training & being intoxicated on arrival but was later talked around by the players after Strempel apologised to him, one of the very FEW players to get a second chance under Toddy.
Gee if only he could have been more disciplined off the field he could have been a great player ol Stretch but alas.

Frank Stockley came to Subi after missing selection in WP’s 2013 premiership team, another Ex WP boy Joel Latham who played 58 ressies games for Joondy never got a league opportunity, both played in Subi’s 2014 premiership team.

kevan sparks
mick cruntchfield

were both also premiership players after coming from EP

brad Mcdougall from South

Swans got Barry Kimberly off the Dees. A Perth f&B went to South a few years back

As someone else said here, this post needs to focus on rejects who have made good, not good players who have continued to be good at other clubs. And “reject” would have to mean not in the best 22, rather than unwanted. I’m sure that SF would have been happy to keep playing Sokol, or C to keep playing Saunders in the reserves, but those players sought more opportunity and made it count. If we don’t stick to that definition, this will just wind up being another whinge about poaching.

Grump, would Barry Cable be the biggest reject of all after being shown the door from East Freo for being too small of stature fall into your list?
