Be interesting to see if Australia do include Lyon…not sure the thinking behind White…top run scorer in Aust domestic short form these past few years and he bats 7…Short is in the form of his life and not picked…Aust need some clean strikers and hopefully Short and Lynn will be selected come the WC…Tye is a T20 guy nothing more… Eng as folk say are a settled unit…Aust just need to pick the right players for this format…got to rethink if Smith is Aust number 3 tho, slot him in at 4 like Eng do with Root. Let Smith’ guide the innings. Disappointed with Head so far.
Freeze: good analysis, I was going to ask you about Head. Why was Finch bowlling ahead of Marsh?
England easily won again. 350 might be a total that forces there batsman into errors.Humiliated at the last 50 over World Cup.They might start this one as tournament favourite.Japan challenged them to a game on there World Cup Exit in 2015.
The problem is that Lyon is not in the squad and I’m not sure if they are going to add anyone at this stage. The crazy decision was dropping Zampa which made the bowling very pedestrian and predictable apart from Starc and Richardson. Agree that Smith needs to drop to 4 and play a similar role to Root. Also can’t understand why Smith didn’t try Marsh earlier preferring Head and Finch who were easy meat for the England batsmen. The difference between the two teams is that England have got a very clear game plan and stick to it under pressure whereas Australia seem to be making it up as they go along. Its almost like the teams have swapped shirts since the tests.
Having said that Jhye Richardson made a very promising debut. He bowled with genuine pace and showed few nerves. He is destined to play test cricket one day.
Jai Richardson was the best of the bowlers.
I know Starc got some wickets late but he bowls far to short.
Why the frig Lyon is not in the side astounds me.
He is the best spinner in the country.
White should play for Japan what an overrated b…
Head should lose his.
Must pick form players.

Another lost at the selection table. Smith is NOT aggressive enough as a batsman nor powerful enough. His captaincy in bowlers lacked thought. Too many Aussies think they are safe in the team. Too many batsmen fail to improve the run rate. The top six batsmen all failed to score quickly although Finch got a century.. English spin (inc ROOT) slow us down.
Lets dump Smith, Head & White (who should have batted 3 - 4) & bring in anyone including MAXWELL. The tried players look scared of the poms.
they have got Root out for three innings – includding when he was crook in the Sydney Test Match.
One change I would make tommorrow is to swap Head and Smith in the batting order as Head does seem to like starting his innings with the pace and he has more chance of doing that at number 3. Smith can then play the Joe Root type role at number 4. I would also bat Stoinis at 5 ahead of Mitch Marsh. Looks like they are going to play the test quicks so Richardson and Tye will drop out. Not sure if thats a great move. One certainty is that Zampa will be back.
I find that very surprising too, also Travis Head. Finch actually bowled 11 dot balls out of 18 deliveries, Head bowled 14 out of 42.
For all the talk about a genuine bowling all rounder, (which Mitch Marsh is) then him being the 7th bowler used, behind Finch, Head and Stonis and only for 1 over appears to be somewhat of a contradiction in the bowling all rounder selection or just poor utilisation by the captain.
Why drop Richardson?
Best of the bowlers in the last game.
Why no second spinner?
If the WC was played tomorrow Eng would win in a canter…looks like 300 to many for this current Aust batting line up…Woakes and Buttler doing what Aust would like Stoinis and Marsh to do I guess..Starc and Cummins looked clueless in the end…as did Smith…gonna be a big ask getting this…think 30 more than the Aust would of liked…interesting Aust batsmen in the first 2 ODI fell 30 odd short each time and now the Eng batsmen finish 30 odd more than what Aust would of like…sums up where the two sides are at present…at least Aust have time and the benchmark what to replicate I guess…see if Australia have the smarts to do so
Well said, Freezin, now the job is in front of the Aussies to avoid a clean sweep, as mikeh astutely said was on the cards after Game 1.
Geez, what we’d give to have a hitter like Jos Buttler in our line-up, though on their day A Finch, D Warner, M Marsh and M Stoinis are capable of the same type of carnage.
Given the next game is in Adelaide, I’d like to see Alex Carey come in for Tim Paine, while I reckon Pat Cummins should be rested and Jhye Richardson come back in.
It was a good effort by England, winning after Plunckett went down injurred. The Australians need to work out how to play against Morgan’s field, in particular, those three fieldsmen behind point. Those fieldsmen have barely stopped a ball between them; and yet, England have still won three games, effectively, with only six fieldsmen.
The game was a good match Ark.Momentum shifts to both sides.Ali not batting or bowling well.Recon he will be lucky to play again this summer.
The big question for me is whether Smith should captain in all forms of the game? A brilliant batsman at test level and an astute captain in the longer form but has been found wanting in this series so far. If it’s good enough for the Poms to have different captains and be successful in the 50 over version then maybe that’s something Aus should look at as well. Is Smith in Australia’s best 6 batsmen at smash and bash level?
Yep u beat me to it BC…Is Smith a ODI player anymore? Great batsman we all know in the longer format, but has Aust dependence on Smith in test arena to grind out one big innings after another has culled his ability to change the gears for the shorter formats…seemed to find the fielders with ease and lacked any power to go over the top esp v Root and Ali…hope the guy can prove me wrong, but seriously beginning to think his selection in the shorter formats is hindering Aust ability to improve…surely Smith must be picked on merit not simply because he is Aust test Captain and Aust best test batsman…horses for courses one would think surely?
Come you two stop playing silly buggers, one cannot question the man’s capacity as a batsman. Don’t forget his side is lugging around the following in its middle order:
White
Stonis
\Marsh
Hardly world class
As for Smith’s captaincy, I agree you could do a whole thread ont his limitations, but I would rather have him then any of the options.
Some observations on todays game.
- A much more competitive performance by the Australians but like the first two games, England won the moments that mattered.
- Australia were in front on the over by over comparison until the 49th over, yet still lost comfortably thanks to Buttlers brilliant hitting.
- Australia lack a death bowler with enough variations to stifle the scoring at the end. Wood and Woakes are very good at this and didnt give Stonis much to hit in the late innings. Faulkner was the last decent finisher in the 50 over game and he seems to have been banished.
- Smith was not out, shocking decision by the third umpire. The fact that he replayed it about 30 times should have indicated that there was enough doubt to give the benefit to the batsman, whatever the “soft” signal of the umpire.
- Cameron White is no value in the ODI setup. I think everyone but the selectors realised that. They missed a great opportunity to blood an in form young player like Darcy Short in the team.
6.Smith obviously has no confidence in Mitch Marsh’s bowling. He bowled tidily and took a wicket but was taken off after only 3 overs, while everyone else went around the park.
The good thing about this series is that it is 18 months to the World Cup so now we know what standard we have to get to to try to get to in order to defend the trophy. England are the number one ODI team and they still have Stokes to come back in which is extremely scary.
Warner needs a rest seems in rapid decline. Smith more limited in one day cricket but still in our best 11. Lyon needs to play and Maxwell should be first picked. Head, White, Tye, Richardson and Zampa are state cricketers only. And watching Paine and his balsa wood bat last night It’s clear a keeper with more power is necessary.
Agree about the Smith decision, even the Pomms were resigned to a not out after seeing the replays!! Aust lost by 16 runs, If smith has stayed around in partnership with Marsh it may have been a different story. But the game was lost by the bowlers inability to keep the last three overs to around 9-10 an over which would have been acceptable.
