my 2c on the goodes topic

Im using this to get your opinions,

there is no racial undertone in the booing, otherwise jetta would have also copped the same thing,

how is it such a sore point with adam when jack watts, steve johnson, brent harvey and hayden ballantyne cop it week in week out.

and I’m sorry but i personally take offence to having a spear thrown at me, how is one allowed and another frowned upon, its the double standards and preferential treatment which is creating the friction in my opinion.

Agree or disagree?

agree MV…I think its double standards when people booed Jobe Watson and as unsavoury as it was, and it went straight through to the keeper as just one of those things. do the same to someone who is not a white anglo saxon and straight away its racial. i wonder if the same would be said if say Bashir Houli was booed…would the commentators and AFL say its because he’s Muslim? I dont think so…as a society we do get overly precious at times for the sake of political correctness.

agree

From Gerard Whately, a respected commentator of the game and I agree with him totally

“At its heart here there is a racist element. Not everyone booing is a racist, but you are covering up the racist element. If you are not booing for racist grounds, stop, because it never used to be part of your day at the footy.

“Stop, and let the racists boo and then call them out, because this is disgusting.

“We are driving Adam Goodes to the end of his career. He’ll probably finish at the end of this season and he is going to be booed into retirement.”

Whateley said anyone who argued the booing was not racist was “being deceptive in the debate”.

“Adam Goodes has never been booed in such a manner at Subiaco before – keep in mind that Swans and West Coast have the great rivalry in the competition when Goodes was a central figure to it,” Whateley said.

“Goodes was the focus of ever-intensifying booing through out the game. Lewis Jetta … clearly believes this to be racist, and it obviously has a racist [undertone].

“People are pretending it is because [Goodes] slides or he plays for a free kick. The truth is it is because he has called out racism. He’s been the Australian of the Year, he’s challenged white Australia and he has tried to further the cause of his people.

“That is confronting in a game that pretends it has made so much ground.”

That is an excellent point BC! its just reached a point where its becoming frustrating that it dominates the football. i wonder if Sydney won the game would it be the major talking point with garry lyon and these eastern states football programs.
poor old razor ray was copping a lot of heat as well and we haven’t heard or seen any war dances for the umpires haha.

mikeh i understand what you’re saying but do you agree with the war dances directed at the crowd? it signifies death & throwing spears at the crowd. i think you do that at any stadium and you will get a rise from the crowd.

Goodes may not have been heavily booed in the previous games at subi but I’m 100% sure that michael o’loughlin was and that was purely because he was one of the most dangerous on the field, but never felt the need to throw spears into the crowd.

I actually think the booing thing with Goodes is a self perpetuating act whereby one particular crowd started it months ago probably for good reason and it seems to have continued. i bet if you asked those at Subi Oval why they were booing you’d get a whole range of answers which suggests to me there is not one singular reason that is uniting the crowd…rather it’s just what every other non-sydney supporter does so we’ll do it too type thing.

i don’t think it’s racially based rather just a flock of sheep scenario which the perpetrators know will get a response from Goodes and others.

I agree. The more the afl and its “bevy” of players ask the crowd to stop, it will only spur them on. If one of the media puppets ( even you Matt Priddis) had a REASONED approach to the whole thing rather than attack the crowd, you might ( i say might ) engage some people to agree with you. Not one media puppets has had the gonads to look at any reason other than racial as to why he is booed. That is how shallow they are, and too scared to have an opinion that may just may have a balanced view point. Funny how Wirra wasnt booed, but Chris lewis was eh!!. Subtle difference in the chracters of those 2 players perhaps would be the reason eh!. The media imho are resposible for creating this problem, and only have emselves to blame.
As a cheeky aside i thought BOOOOOOOOOOOING at anything at all was compulsory at WCE games.

Agree with Whatley , and anyone who tries to say otherwise is deluding themselves.

As Jonathon Brown says the booing is bordering on ridiculous. but then I guess he is a sook as well.

Quite frankly the display at Subi oval was an out and out moronic disgrace.

WCE officials have condemned it, including Phil Narkle who said he felt offended as an Aboriginal himself, as has Priddis, as has just about every player and sports writer worth his salt across the country.

Another point of view from Francis Leach an ABC commentator.

The gutless drongos who boo Adam Goodes should have the courage to admit they’re a bunch of ugly racists.

What a redneck wonderland footy has become.

Every weekend, somewhere in Australia, Adam Goodes steps out onto a footy field.
Simultaneously, an army of gutless drongos get ready to express their contempt for him, hiding anonymously in the choir of clowns who boo his every step.

Hey, bigots, don’t get me wrong.

I defend your right to express your unfathomable sense of outrage and injustice.

It must burn long and deep. Probably over the spiralling price of a pie at the footy or the quality of the rubbish beer your force yourself to drink whilst acting like obnoxious school kids.

Your worries and concerns must weigh heavily on your poor benighted souls. So knock yourselves out. Boo away. At least have the courage though to admit what it is.

Racism.

Naked, loud, contemptible, pathetic and unashamed.

None of this crap about Goodes staging for free kicks, being a “sniper” or sweet talking the umpires is the reason for the booing.

Don’t use football as shield for your prejudice.

Adam Goodes has made it quite clear he hears those boos as a statement on his race and culture.

Blokes like Goodes tend to have a finely tuned radar for racism. When you have been living with it all your life you learn to speak it’s many ugly languages.

So when he tells you what it means to him and you choose to boo, you’re confirming to him and every other indigenous footballer what you’re really about.

What you don’t like and can’t abide is that Adam Goodes won’t be the Aboriginal footballer you want him to be.

He refuses to simply be the smiling face of AFL Indigenous Round where the game’s self congratulation goes into over drive and Aboriginal people are celebrated in a set of proscribed rituals that say nothing about the true state of affairs and everything about our need to be absolved from responsibility.

A smoking ceremony here. A ceremonial dance there. A welcome to country and then goodbye, onto the next costume party.

No, Goodes wants to look you in the eye and talk about who we really are and where we’re really at. Goodes wants to confront racism and its uncomfortable truths. In the stands you sit in, the mines you work in, the boardrooms you meet in, the homes you live in.

He won’t simply be the Aboriginal man you want him to be.

And with your symphony of boos you’ve made it quite clear where you stand.

The fact that you fuel your own sense of outrage at Goodes and Lewis Jetta’s “war dance” shows how feeble minded and self righteous you are.

Where’s your sense of outrage at the appalling gap in life expectancy for indigenous people?

The massive over representation of indigenous people in jail?

The continuing scourge of deaths in custody?

Your silence is deafening on those issues. Your outrage reserved for a man who dances on the footy field.

And whilst you’re booing ever louder and ever longer you can try drown out the truth of these things.

You can’t. And you won’t.

Because Adam Goodes’ legacy will endure long after your hollow howls ring out.
And that must hurt the most.

bazza when the sydney president comes out and says if you boo Goodes you’re an out and out racist then that adds fuel to the fire. there may be some elements of the crowd doing it for racial reasons but when you consider boomer harvey gets booed, chris lewis got booed relentlessly, ben cousins was booed…then i’m convinced it’s more about getting in on the act rather than being a racist. when something happens to someone in a minority group that can’t be explained, those who feel inclined to make comment inevitably lay the blame on racism, homophobia, religious intolerance or something that makes them feel politically correct and superior rather than accepting the simple reason that on face value, as far as Goodes is concerned, people just don’t like him.

Said Frances Leach from i suspect his leafy comfortable house in Camberwell,Malvern, or Hawthorn. Hey Frances come over west my man, and live in WA where there are are a larger proortion of indigenous folk. Meantime please inform me what else we can do to solve the problems?. Do you serioulsy think that manyof the younger city based indigenous people care about any form of respect, to either themselves or anyone else??.

what a load of tripe, honestly.
the fact is there was a starting point to this whole thing. And it was the shaming of a 13-year old girl. It all started from that exact day. People have never forgotten and they dislike the bloke immensely for it. I think Francis needs to pull his head out of his backside before he labels people as racists, based on a booo. You cant do that by law I would have thought.

Bloody hell the footy media has lost its head. This is all a joke.

I have to agree with Dermie’s comments, Maybe goods should look into the long hall of mirrors and try to determine why people are booing him,

If its racist then its not on, however if there are other reasons, and lets remember Goods has had his share of detractors over the years, then people are entitled to their opinion. remember we changed the rule on attacking the footy because Goodes was regularly sliding into packs and hurting people, and he was disgraceful in the way he shamed a 13 year old girl on TV a few years ago. A strong character would have had a quiet word to security, not stood there pointing and yelling on Friday night TV so that everyone knew the identity of that kid.

Jason Akamanis is another that was boo’d, were we racist due to his red hair???

my penny worth. Its called sledging. If it gets a player upset then Stiff. Next the AFL will make it compulsory for players the applaud the umpire when he makes a dubious decision. Adam should stop knocking over opposition players. Luv to see Brian Lake take a screamer over Goodesy in the finals with 20 seconds to go & Hawks up by 2 pts. Adam would walk over to Brain & lift him up from the grass & tell him it was a great mark. LIKE HELL. Aussies are sledgers well before our Cricketers heard of it.

In all honesty mikeh, Gerard is the type of bloke who probably irons his own underwear. I think that counts for something in this debate. And if that labels people like myself as a stereotyper, then I guess Gerard is exactly the same based on his views too. He himself is stereotyping people and categorising them based on absolutely no true knowledge.

Great piece of writing and sadly true.

I guess Jon Brown and Phil Narkle iron their own jocks as well. Feeble stuff mate.

I disagree with you on this one Jardine. I think Gerard is not one to get into the media hyberbole that say his mate on AFL 360 ( Robinson?) indulges in so his opinions are more likely to be based on his honest observations. I think you are shooting the messenger.

Whats amazing in this Baz is that if a persons opinion doesnt side with the “against booing” ticket, they are deemed racist. Its a weak argument. Just like Whately, Brown and Narkle have an opinion, it doenst mean they are automatically right either. Never thought Id live to see the day where booing at the footy was an issue. It has never been an issue in 100 years. Now it is, go figure? Feeble? Whatever.

For the record I personally don’t boo and cant be bothered, but Ive been hearing it forever.

Whats the reason people dont like him?
