NZ have won an important toss on a hot day and from the looks of the first session and a bit, England are in for some leather chasing. NZ are 0 for 119 just after lunch. The Kiwis lost Matt Henry and Phillips just before the game so they will need a big first innings score to keep the pressure on England

The Kiwis have moved to 0-213 at tea, with Tom Latham 109no and Devon Conway 94no.
Could this pair bat all day, as happened on Day 1 of the 1989 Ashes Test, also at Trent Bridge?
Australia was 0-301 at stumps, with Mark Taylor 141no and Geoff Marsh 125no.
Taylor (219) and Marsh (138) extended their opening partnership to 329 and the Aussies declared at 6-602 (Extras = 61!) en route to an innings and 180 runs victory.
It would be an understatement to say that English cricket was at a very low ebb back in 1989.
Seems funny to say it with the Kiwis none for 200 but the Poms are actually bowling quite well, mostly good line and length with some swing. Just a combination of a flat pitch, a hot day and some excellent batting from Latham and Conway have kept them out so far.
If England could snaffle a wicket after tea they may just grab another 3 or 4 if they can keep up the bowling pressure

Englands bowling has completely fallen away after tea. Conway and Latham filling their boots. 600 well and truly on the cards now
4 late wickets sullied what was looking like one of NZ’s greatest ever days in Test Cricket.
Definitely had some luck winning the toss on a very flat wicket, but at 0/317 the openers well and truly did their job, the rest need to dig in and get close to 600 if possible.
Will be interesting to see how the NZ bowlers go without Henry & Jamieson playing?
Geez it must be a road if Latham can ton up…..honest sort at best, Conway is a tad better…..I will hate to see what Root and Brook score , if they get in…..especially v a NZ attack devoid of Henry and Jamieson.
@Freezin I think that’s his 17th ton in test cricket, I know some batters around the world would like that record. 317 in 73 overs before the first wickets is good going.
This probably highlights there is clearly issues with the poms - I think Stoken may be out the door , it seems he and Keys/McCallum are not working together any more

PH…..Latham averages 27 v Aust, 30 v India, 31 v Eng and 14 v SA…..from 50 test matches v these 4 sides….he had scored 2 tons…..with number 2 coming yesterday…..as an opening batsman, not sure that cuts the mustard. Does well v the lesser sides I guess….as 15 tons from 44 tests indicate…..but agree 17 test tons is nothing to be sniffed at
Still going to be hot on Day 2, will be interesting to see if Archer and co can back up with the new ball. Anything under 500 will amount to a good fightback by England. Harry Brook is due an epic innings so it might be this test.
Any spin or turn on that Trent Bridge pitch?
Not sure Santner or Bashir are considered threatening enough unless bowling on subcontinent dustbowls TBH….
Plus Harry has no Henry to counter…..the pitch should only get flatter for day 2 and 3…..
Stokes has shown today why he is so important to England cricket. Single handedly dragged his team back into the game today. NZ lost 10 for 121,after the opening stand. Lets see how England bat
Early doors but the Kiwi attack looks pretty impotent on this flat pitch. Root, Brook and Stokes will be licking their lips and you would think that England have now got an opportunity to post a huge score on a docile track. NZ will have to make inroads before stumps to stay ahead of the game
