Maurice Rioli won the Simpson medal in a 1981,losing GF.
It was a strange game of footy.Dominated by both teams defence.With an enormous amount of tackles laid in the midfield.

One of the most lack lustre GFs I have attended, we got there in the end but gee it was dull, the last few minutes we almost stuffed it up, only exciting part of the game but the plan almost paid off for EP, which is possible when you keep a tight margin, well sort of as 3-4 goals in a game like that should have been plenty. 2 points …and gee the longest 1/4 was the last by a long way.
Umpiring was crap to top it off.
Crowd was woeful , 23,000 on a day like that with two trad clubs? very poor Late start , Sunday , no long weekend …all did not help. Oh and Optus stank as a venue as a result…
What was the ticket price in previous years? Was it a sudden big jump?
Was there a premiership celebration back at the club afterwards Baz? I imagine it would have been futile. Probably 7.30 - 8 o’clock by the time you leave the ground and make it to Fremantle. On a Sunday night that doesn’t work.
It’s odds on the AFL will scrap the week off before finals and move it to pre GF so I think the WAFL GF has to be played on that weekend and should be on a Saturday.

Yes mate it was about 8.30 by the time I got back to the club…it felt bloody late and tbh Freo was pretty dead..most of the pubs close at 9pm.
Back at the club the crowd would have been half that of 2005 or even 2020…and wow time is taking its toll…so many old stagers are now to old to kick on or have passed away…you could really sense generational change.
Sunday definitely puts a dampener on things also I don’t think the events back there were as well planned as previous GF…don’t think I heard the club song booming out once.

Maybe your club could put on a grand final lunch next weekend doubling up with the AFL GF. Put on a proper celebration.
Unbeilable as it sounds Red, The Club stopped opening on AFL GF day a few years ago.
My God what an opportunity to make $$$. I might go to a new Sports Bar in Midland staggering distance from home called Last Slice. Massive screens, Darts 
, Pool Tables, caters for kids and families probably have to book I imagine.
New York style pizzas, ribs etc…
I am going to Leopold for one last roll of the dice there old times sake before the bulldozers move in this will be its last ever GF day.

Havent heard it mentioned much but kudos to Craig White for winning a flag in his first season as a WAFL coach. I know some on here have criticised his coaching during the season but you can’t do much better that a 20-1 season. He has certainly had the cattle but you have to point the cattle in the right direction to succeed and he sure has done that. Can’t think of too many coaches who have won a flag in their debut season. Well done

and had my big concerns and they existed in the Grand Final too
next year will be a massive test given the tactics in the Grand Final
but the bottom line is a Premiership isn’t it
Yes exsctly. Most of the criticism toward White has been unkind and simply uncalled for.
My god you’re hard to please. I was back at the club until midnight, was great atmosphere, club song belted out numerous times, speeches, players on stage, middle of the oval with cup, past players were there too which was brilliant (Toby McGrath, saw Seigert, Kevin Sheedy was there, Tim Kelly in his SF jumper from his playing days at south and heaps of others. We won a flag mate!! In our 125th year. BEST record EVER!! Enjoy it. Who cares what the crowd was! We won the premiership!! 15th as SFFC but don’t forget the flags we won as Fremantle FC from 1887 - 1899. There’s 7 to 8 flags that are ours as well.
