Why so many guests??

I check the Ozfooty site on most days and I always look at who’s online. Depending on the time of day, there are usually anything from 1 - 15 members but there are also considerably larger number of guests who I assume are people who are reading what is on the site. This morning there were 150 of these “guests” on the site. My question is " who are all these people"?.

I assume that some of them may be existing members who are having a look at what is being discussed before deciding whether to log on but this can’t account for them all. Maybe there are people who are reading posts because they want to see what people are saying about various issues. I did this on Footygoss for a fair while before taking the plunge and joining up. Hopefully none of the guests are people who are trying to get into the site to sell us stuff which is what destroyed the footygoss site.

It would be interesting to hear why so many people look at this site and maybe if there are people out there who are not members and would like to have a say about any aspect of footy, I would encourage you to sign up and put your 10 cents worth in. Most people on this site are passionate about footy and it is very enjoyable to take part in discussions. Of course like all sites there are a few trolls but this is very much of a minority group here.

So if you are reading this post and want to contribute to the discussion I would encourage you to sign up. This site is a very well run one by George and Mike and the more people that join the better I reckon.

Hi Mike,

Most of these visitors are people coming in from WA which is identifiable by the IP Range. I can even narrow it down to suburbs such as Aramadale, but this could also include Seville Grove, or even some of Kelmscott.

Some visitors are Eastern States (Victoria and SA make up a big number), and some are also visits from web robots such as those owned by Google or Microsoft’s Bling.

Good post Mike.Yeah I have wondered the same thing as well.
Like you I would like to see the lurkers get involved in the chat that goes on here.
I know that there is one person who comes from another site in the East who constantly comes here to check out what I post.I upset him and his two other cohorts on another site.It is a site that has over 4.000 member yet only three actually post on there.Good to see you are still looking in to see how it is here.
As I write now there are 62 guests and 14 members on line,to the lurkers sign in and come chat.Have a say.

A sample of places currently serving pages to based on IP’s:

Wantirna South
Albany
Perth
Canberra (me probably)
Perth (90% I’d say a the moment)
East Perth
Kenwick
Australind
Brunswick East
Melbourne
Sydney
Darwin
Bassendean
Claremont
Preston
Attadale
Norwood
Adelaide
Elizabeth

California USA
Christchurch NZ
Auckland NZ

Thanks Mike, that is very interesting to see that so many people from outside WA are viewing the site

I quite often browse the site without signing in at work Mike just to confirm your theory

MikeXU1,as a matter of interest, just how many members are there on this board at the moment?

A/M, looks like that there are 800. I got this figure from the bottom of the index page. The other Mike would be able to confirm this

I reckon some people wouldn’t be able to post stuff at work, but having a read would be okay

Yes that is true. Many people working in offices would not have unlimited time for personal computer use. After all, they are supposed to be working. But many people would use the work computer for a bit of personal usage, no doubt. Which probably explains the many guests.

Around 801 active logins at time of reply. This is, people who have confirmed their account (human’s), not computer generated accounts for the purpose of spam.

The only time I ever post on here is during work hours :stuck_out_tongue:

Mike, i browse through this site constantly without logging in. I use the login only when i wish to make a comment. I presume many other members do the same. I encourage anybody viewing this site who are not members to join up!

VF ok by that but the site is all about feedback. Same old dozen or so posters talking to each other when I arent talking to myself on WP thread.
Gets to a point it isnt worth posting as no debate or views from other members. Ok it is good that people read the posts but hearing other points of view from members keeps the board rolling around..
If not the guys who put in the hard yards just stop posting as well
And there goes the board

This board is free, and will always be free. Feel free to post.

Well said Cardy. We need input from many more to continue to keep this site a viable one.

I don’t think you need to panic peoples. One HUGE advantage of this site being a easy to follow format. With no stupid advertising, spam or other crap to interfere. If you go to the Index page, scroll to the base and select User List>>, all the members appear on the screen. I only looked at the first 7 pages and there is a good sprinkling of frequent posters because the post totals can be seen. Obviously some members post more than others which is normal.

Another possible reason for the number of guests is there is no other wafl type forum around. The Wafl website no longer having a forum! The old footygoss fell off the perch and looks like staying down. And the individual Wafl clubs webpages don’t even have a forum any-more either! It would be fair and honest to say without this site, we’d be stuffed! The guests probably visit to catch up with any news they can’t find anywhere else.
