WestAustralian WANFL series

have to applaud today’s instalment of the new series on the history of WANFL footy
Today was Jim & Philip Krakouer
geez it was good seeing the old grounds and famous players once again
just flick the vision past the Victorian garbage and it’s all good
Thank you

*** my deep apologies for those farking awful thieving Victorian guernseys

actually the other thing I should have added was that Philip Krakouer , along with Maurice Rioli & Benny Vigona , had the best sidestep dummy ever seen on the grass anywhere

I see the great Phil Krakouer is finally going in to the WA Football Hall Of Fame tonight, he should have been in there years ago and inducted with older brother Jimmy as the Krakouer Brothers as they were always tagged were the most dynamic duo I have ever seen in 44 years of watching WA footy!

yes mate - really should have happened years ago
two very different players but just so bloody deadly by foot
I have watched some NITV 34 and seen a bit of Philip talking about footy - he’s certainly got quite a good footy brain

and today was my childhood hero - the one and only and equal-greatest ever ruckman Stephen Michael
I say he and Graham Farmer cannot be separated and even Farmer marvelled himself at TI’s brilliance
He told the Victorians to “go and get fucked - I wouldn’t play for you if there were two of me”
and I just loved that , it inspired me as a young bloke
wonderful man who has time for anyone
Enjoy the watch

Love watching the old WAFL footage from the greatest era in footy mate but I think Readings was factually incorrect in that piece.
I thought TI came from Kojonup not Wagin and also I believe Joel Cornelius (SD) now holds the record in the WAFL for most consecutive games in a row.

Yes mate that’s right

The Matera’s were from Wagin

TI was from Kojonup

and the Swan Districts fellow did eventually break the run

It’s a shame research isn’t done properly to the champions

Yes Southerner, back when it was the biggest show in town and was the biggest deal to win.

The sad fact is now even when your own team wins it just doesn’t mean the same anymore, friends ,relatives and the old stagers.

Crikey even the Sandover was THE medal to win and now you battle to hear it discussed.

well lots of things in Victoria are packing their bags and leaving
in droves
waiting waiting waiting
hahahaha
houses of cards do what ?

I was out at Baskerville oval a couple weeks ago watching the year 9’s play and I was standing next to a fella having a chat. I went and grabbed a bench for us to sit on and we got chatting about the game of years ago compared to now and some of the things we coach today vs not coach today. Shepherding being one of those. Spent probably an hour and I found out later it was Phil Krakouer. I think it was his nephew in the team. Great fella!

Today we saw Brian Peake (EF/P/Geel & WA)
One of the very best exponents of the torpedo punt - whether that be set shot or on the run
There was a time in history when streets in and around East Fremantle had just about all the kids wearing number 7 on the back of old jumpers
He was one of those guys that lifted in State games - 1986 a perfect description
I thought it was harsh of EF to deny Peake playing his 400th in EF colours but that’s why he did it playing for Perth
Late Edit: Readings has fucked it up again - he played 402 games I believe (not 372)

I think it was only fair of EF to let Bomber play a few games at Perth, considering he played his footy at the Manning Footy club. Some great highlights there, never shirked a contest, got a bit treatment, especially in the Freo derby, with nil complaint.

Was karma when Bomber kicked 7 against the Big V at Subi Oval, definitely shut up a few of those arrogant Victorian “pasties” comments. Best bit of those highlights was when Bomber pinged Bartlett for holding the ball.

The 70’s and mid 80’s was definitely the pinnacle for WA footy as a spectacle…got lucky to be part of it growing up…though I can imagine the 50’s and 60’s were pretty good as well.

Great character shown by the Dees in the Colts.Bouncing back after last week.Best of luck in the GF.
Wp will have another crack at Swans in the Ressies. Like the Colts promises to be a great match.
Wow Peels Afl listed players made a real statement ,today. This has happened before in a couple of GF’s v Subi.
Ends a good season for Subi.Possibly half a dozen exits at the end of the 23 season. Will be a new look Subi side next year.
Its quiet predictable that the Wafl GF will be a really close, tight match.Sharks will be fresh but this is right up the AFL boys alley.
Cmon Freo fans ,support your ressies in the GF.Hopefully Sharks fans from the midwest make the trip down to Perth.Great football region of Wa.

Today we had Swan District’s Narkle brothers - two very talented footballers

More than just talented mate, Keith & Phil were both champions in the WAFLs heyday!

There were two or three stalwarts I was very happy to see get that 1982 flag - Keith , Ronnie Bouch & Stan
they’d seen so much hard toil over many years
I recall very early in Phil’s career he got thumped high pretty severe (may have been against East Perth ???) & he was badly affected by it , hence the Basil Campbell style helmet , which makes his career all the more meritorious mate

Most consecutive WAFL matches (confirmed by WAFL historian)

Matches Name Club Period
219 Joel Cornelius SD 1995 – 06
205 Gary Scott SF 1959 – 69
197 Aidan Parker Su 2005 – 13
194 Tony Notte SD 2012 – 22
188 Stephen Michael SF 1975 – 83
174 Rory O’Brien PT/EF 2009 – 17
158 George Prince EF 1945 – 52

Today’s instalment brought out Gary Buckenara (Subiaco)
was recruited from the Amateurs during Subiaco’s dark era & immediately made his mark
only played 61 for the Lions and WA footy didn’t see all that much of him unless there were state games
exceptional above his head for his size

*** Please excuse these farking awful Victorian thief garbage guernseys

Today saw Stephen Curtis (EP)
started off very young - 16 or 17 I think it may have been
eventually took a big cheque to go to Port Adelaide SANFL

and today saw the mercurial , and I’m not sure that is even near the right description , Peter Bosustow
this guy could do anything on his day
a match winner all by himself
