Waltzing Matilda’s

Might be doing just that sooner than expected out of the tournament with the revelation of Sam Kerr suffering a calf strain at the last training session before the World Cup opener. Horrible bad luck and timing and one of the worst injuries to get right on the eve of what is it, a 2 week tournament?

It would have to be the lowest grade of calf strain for Sam to have any chance of getting back to take part in this World Cup even if they can pull off a miracle and make it through to the final without her.

Looking forward to this WC.

But Gee I thought the Aussies a bit fortunate to get the points last nigth, Ireland played better for most of the game. The Penalty covered what was a pretty lucklustre showing against the team appearing in its first even WC.

Will need a big lift V the power sides on that effort.

Juxtaposed to the Kiwis who were very impressive v a fancied Norwegian team.

Pretty much stuffed it now, struggled against Ireland and got toweled up by 40th ranked team Nigeria, now have to beat highly rated Canada to progress out of group stage, cannot see it happening, pretty embarrassing exit on a much hyped up home world cup.

Hard to believe but the Matilda’s are still in the mix which is fantastic.
Not sure how they defeated the Canadians last week, as the aussies were the under-dogs. And tonight the Matilda’s overcame the more fancied Danish side. Apparently Denmark had only conceded 1 goal prior to this match. Apparently the Matilda’s next match is in the quarter finals on Saturday afternoon against either France or Morroco.

The "Tildas withstood an early attacking barrage from the Danes with superb defence and cool heads, then cut them up twice on the re-bound, the pass by young Fowler to Foord was a thing of beauty, Beckham-esque and Foord’s finish was clinical.
Loved the huge roar when Sam Kerr took the field, she looked rusty but will be better for the run.

Mary Fowler is a star of the future I think she is still only 18 and looks like the baby of the team but she has a cool head on her shoulders and a good soccer brain. She was also instrumental in the second goal. She reminds me of a young Cathy Freeman. The World Cup is there for the taking if the Aussie girls are good enough. Would be a fairytale come true.

Just curious DD, with your homophobic rants on other topics, it doesn’t affect your support of the Matilda’s and their openly gay team members?

More interested in Bazza’s next post on the Matilda’s WC status… talk about pulling the trigger early or having a post or posts age well.

Hopefully when the Rugby WC starts next month, Bazza can give the All Black’s a plug like he did the NZ ladies Football Ferns, and Eddie Jones Wallabies a pessimistic serve like he did on the Matilda’s early WC efforts. Reverse psychology at its best.

Pardon the pun, I think the Aussie girls will need to be on the ball against the French team. They have done really well to reach the quarter finals. France were fairly ruthless in their last match.

I don’t care what their sexual orientation is as long as they are just playing sport and not trying to hijack it to make some political statements. What I resent and I think I’m no Robinson Crusoe here, is having this gay rainbow crap shoved in our face because they want to draw attention on themselves. Do whatever you want to do but we don’t need to have you repeatedly telling us how badly you need to be heard and accepted.

Comprendo Frothy or do I need to start an anti gay movement with a red circle around a rainbow with a red line across it as a symbol and hijack everything to make a political statement whether you care or not?

Yesh ok will stick my hand up for that one, happy to have got it wrong but was not the only one.

bring on the frogs

How good was that game tonight? Those Matildas have nerves of steel. France were desperately unlucky to lose as they finished the stronger team in extra time but our goalie was superb in the penalty shootout.
England only played 90 minutes against Columbia so they will be a lot fresher for the semi final which will be played on Wednesday. It seems insane that there is only 4 days between games at this stage of the tournament. It should be a weeks break.

I’ve always disliked the penalty shoot out stuff to determine a winner! Sad way for the game to end.
However a fantastic effort by the aussie goalie. That lady deserves a medal.
Bad luck to the frenchies, because it was a good game.

Optus Sports who has the TV rights for the EPL.On sold the Woman’s Soccer World Cup to Channel 7.
Government legislation has the tournament on free to air tv.Seven paid 4 million to Optus Sports..lol huge win for Channel 7, hoping they get to the final.
Saturday night ratings only beaten by a 4 minute horse race.Held on the first Tuesday in November.

Can see Kerr having a cracking game on Wed and putting the English to the sword…like she does most weeks for Chelsea. Hopefully the defence can stand up and keep the English strikers/forwards at bay.

Love watching how the Tilly’s and their coach go about their business, so intense and focussed, fingers crossed we get 2 more games.

On an associated matter, all this talk about a public holiday is driving me nuts, almost like putting a jinx on the team. As for having a public holiday, nice idea unless your trying to run a small business in these trying times. If the Feds and state governments decide to have one then there should also be a decree that no penalty rates will apply for this one off event, given it would have been an ordinary working day, if they do that then there should be no complaints.

We will get two more games whatever happens SS, because there is a play off for 3rd as well.

Got no probs there SS…just don’t get ill mate and go into ED or hospital though. All the staff will be watching the game instead of their patients, regardless of double pay or not…all comes down to priority mate…if you ain’t bleeding out, then stay at home till the match is done…hopefully it doesn’t go to extra time and penalties eh?

Silly thing is, even if they do declare a public holiday, it won’t be Monday - it will be some time in the future when we all forgot why we are having it if the states allow us to have it.

Ratings have been sky high so far, breaking all records, biggest sports tv even since 2000 Olympics.
