WAFL in decline

No shit Sherlock? You have allowed it to rot on the vine for far too long. They say crowds are dwindling and WAFL clubs are too reliant on grants from the commission which will reduce as royalties from the 2 AFL clubs will be less (they don’t explain why) and the Subiaco Oval deal with 11 million a year is up for review in 2027. Surely they mean Perth Stadium?

They say there will be a focus on helping uncompetitive clubs play finals within 4 years and compete for a flag within 8. Lol, 20 years overdue. Let’s see how they’re going to pull that off. I bet my left nut it’s not going to change zones.

those two businesses wouldn’t go broke by paying the same amount and WA football should not be disadvantaged , this was part of their entry into both competitions
do the WAFC think everyone is as dumb as they are ?
should be getting that coin pronto

Every couple of years now same catastrophising about a prophecy pf doom on the horizon. All by design.

Let me guess. The solution is mergers, making it a U23 comp and abandoning the reserves. Anyone see the dead hand of the AFL in any of that?

As DD said, it happened on your watch you useless bloated fucks at the WAFC and as Southy said, millions and millions in WA footy just fkall drips down to the WAFL. Again, by design.

So the bloody useless football commission has only just ““laid bare the reality””.
After everyone else has been able to see it for donkeys years! This topic has been aired on this forum countless times in one form or another (and in other areas) for far too long.
It seems the bureaucratic bunglers have just been fumbling along with no real plan for the Wafl. Dwindling attendances, no main stream media interest, have lost the excellent abc tv wafl televised coverages and the list goes on and on!. Going to be interesting of the explanation in the “decline” in royalties. And why are the Wafl clubs always crying poor.
Shunt those 2 bastards out of the Wafl and return to the 8 team competition if necessary!
If people start telling me the useless commission have just realised how much the Wafl has deteriorated over the past decade, they all should be sacked on the spot!!
Is a pity the Sports Minister could not step in? But none of the others have previously, so cannot expect too much from the current one I suppose.

The AFL claws closer and closer to eliminating all States’ 2nd tier competitions as we know them. The future will be an AFL 2nd tier competition controlled by the AFL and comprise every State’s existing club.
So, no autonomy for each State league. AFL will own and control Aussie Rules as we know it. Sad days ahead for local “footy”.
Our clubs may survive but the AFL will control every one of them.
Footy will never be the same. Oh well, we can always take on A league or NRL. Nah!!! I think I will follow EPL.. Carrrn MU.

if these two pieces of VFL shit cannot provide their full royalty , due to some fraud hardship - then how are they fiscally able to compete in their competition ?
and we do know they themselves receive money from the AFL , all their clubs do
truth is they’ve totally raped WA football and are in the active process of paying even less for it
there is not one single other sport in this world that is run so introvertedly and blatantly home town biased without a single semblance of integrity and open fairness
More than 20 years ago when I stopped having anything to do with the VFL , teams like Collingwood , Richmond , Essendon , Carlton only travelled outside Victoria 3 or 4 times a year - NOT ONE OTHER SINGLE SPORT IN THIS MODERN WORLD HAS SUCH AN UNFAIR PLAYING FIELD , BETTER PUT , NOT ONE OTHER SPORT WOULD TAKE SUCH AN ILLEGALLY UNFAIR STANCE , LEGALLY !
condemning thing is not one single thing has changed , if anything I’m told it’s even worse now
and this injury rate is way beyond alarming , they’ve ruined the game with so many rule changes and tactics that belong in other sports - where is the game itself ?
it resembles everything but Australian Rules at the moment - jesus in WA have umpires who when bouncing down the ball suddenly cannot umpire , it’s too hard to think when they bounce the ball

Several things need to change. The WCE Reserves side is a joke. They are worse than Peel when they started. Go back to the original arrangement where players return to their WAFL club if they arent selected for the AFL side. The Eagle won three flags under that arrangement, and since 2018, have never looked like getting close to another one.
Next time you go a WAFL game, sneak a look at the different categories and the entyrance fees charged. I noticed it as Bassendean last week. Why the hell are AFL recruiters allowed in for nothing? I have no issue with kids under 16 and Life Members at home games, but everyone else should be paying to get in.
Lower the entrance fees to get in. They picked the worst time financially to jack up the prices. Pensioners should be getting in for half price at $10 instead of $17. These are the people who have been going to the WAFL since the 1960’s and 70’s, and to slug them $17, then make them pay for the Budget is too much for them financially.
The media need to take a lot of repsonsibility. The West and Sunday Times are so focused on the AFL, they neglect the WAFL. To encourage more people to read about the WAFL online, make the WAFL stories free on The West Australian website. They wouldn’t be making much money off the stories anyway, so the change in revenue will be non existent.
There needs to be more than one radio station broadcasting games each week. I am grateful for 91.3FM for their commitment to the WAFL, but another station or two need to get involved as well.
The scoreboards should start putting the scores form other games again. Not everyone has access a smart phone and many pensioners wouldnt know how to use the WAFL app.
The Football Budget needs to be revamped as well. Clubs should submit a list of 25 players only for the league side. Reserves and colts shoudl be capped at 28 players. Have some historical articles about things such as the 100 goals in a season goalscorers. The SANFL Budget used to have crosswords which would encourage people to look up the histroy of the league and clubs, such as one for Magarey Medallists, premiership coaches, etc.

Guess what. I’ll bet the outcome of this review will be to bring the “unsustainable” WAFL under the umbrella of the AFL and it will become the AFLWA. Thats when I will lose all interest and pick an ammos team to go and watch.

The wafl win win campaign is a good effort. Not sure if it’s working. How long do you wait to measure its effect? Crowds are definitely down. Think father time is partly responsible.

I hope the reserves stay. Mergers a mistake, I think . What are the participation numbers for amateurs and junior footy? I feel this season had been excellent footy. But I’m a subi supporter.

School footy needs attention i imagine. Not sure anything much can be done. We re perhaps just managing a slow steady decline. Let’s hope we make another 10 years with the traditional clubs and 3 tier format. Not sure we will.

So the word around the campfire is there will be a few clubs that will be restricted from recruiting and the lower clubs will be given more cap space to recruit. That’s the solution, no zone changes. Weak as piss. So the lowest clubs better have a war chest available to compete with the clubs with the best zones. Are you the WAFC going to stump up the cash?

Peelmantle should never be allowed to recruit they are the obvious ones.

…And why is a ‘consulting group’ being employed to look into the Wafl? No doubt they would be commanding a substantial fee! I would have thought with a supposedly tight budget where many other things apparently cannot be afforded, that would be one of the last things the Wafl needed.
One would think that looking into the wafl is the commission’s job, isn’t it? What the hell are they there for?
As the commission said, “We’ve been doing bits and pieces here and there”. Sounds like old hq is completely out of it’s depth. Sounds like serious questions need answering.

I wonder with WCER now played all 9 clubs, they will pull out of the comp till next year…or even for good. Every club has been given a chance to fill their boots…now let’s move them on for 2023. Spread the ES players out in reverse order and let the locals go back to their local. Hopefully that may rejuvenate the declining WAFL …not sure how, but time WCER were shown the door…a blight on the comp TBH.

Boston Consulting Group did a big review of the WAFL back in 2017 and that doesn’t appear to have made much difference so not holding out too many hopes these days.

You seem like a very sensible young man Freekzin with this analysis. Everyone has now had a lick of the ice cream. Time to administer last rites or the mercy rule, which ever comes first. But you are forgetting about the “N” words - Nothing to see here Nisbett.

Boston Consulting Group should be renamed the Boston Insulting Group. Were they not the outfit who forecast 5000 punters at every West Coast Reserves game? As credible as their bedfellows Price Waterlogged Croupiers.

Time WA football to go back to being controlled by the Clubs.
If we have to have a commission all clubs should be represented.

The tail is wagging the dog like it always has been.

Yeah I think we’re at that moment now to go back to club control and junk the WAFC.

I’d go further and de-affiliate from the AFL like the Picola District Football League in Vic has. Sell the licences for $200m and go our own way.

unfortunately Demetriou put just about every state in debt for new or upgraded Ovals and it’s a proven guess there will be Victorian fine print in contracts
Even Rugby League has a far better feeder system , one that is set up to bolster it with state leagues vital to it
The AFL is deliberately waiting for total collapse it can then do what it wishes

other thing to add is that if anyone thinks Roberts , Martin & company will just give up their easy ride - well they would also have to believe that Swine are born with leathery wings
Roberts will go down into history as the CEO who told WA footy he has umpires who cannot bounce the ball because it hurts and they can’t make decisions therefore football’s unique tradition is gone , some of the greatest ever ruckmen have come from this state and the ones who are still alive condemn this rule
On another matter - this current VFL regime is overseeing and supporting the biggest injury list in the history of this game - never has there been such numbers of injured players and now each season sees the numbers grow further and their introverted self centred way is to just invent another draft so they can just keep taking , and taking , and taking
A once very attractive game totally up-ended , it is very hard to watch generally thanks to Victoria
If you remember they used to cheat in State games , picking interstaters to play for them because they simply would not lose with any respect or grace
