Had an hour to spare last night so I pored over a few statistics from past WAFL Grand Finals.
This Sundays game will be the 111th Grand final in the history of the WAFL ( prior to 1904 the premiership was decided on a round robin format).
East Perth and Subiaco have previously met on two occasions in Grand Finals with East Perth victorious both times (1926 and 1959).
The most frequent pairing in a Grand Final is East Fremantle V East Perth which has happened 11 times with the Royals having a 7 – 4 advantage, the next most frequent is the Freo derby with 10 Grand Finals with East Fremantle holding a 6 – 4 lead.
Then we go down to a number of clubs who have played 7 times; East Fremantle V Perth with the Sharks leading 4 – 3, EF V Subiaco with EF in front 4 – 3, Same margin for EF against West Perth, The Falcons have a 5 – 2 advantage over East Perth in their 7 grand finals including the win last year and finally South Fremantle have a 4- 3 advantage over West Perth.
The Bulldogs have never beaten the Royals in a Grand Final in 3 attempts and the same with Claremont against Swans in 4 Grand finals. Leaving Peel out of the equation, of the 28 possible match ups in a Grand Final only 3 have never occurred in the 110 years. As a challenge would anybody like to tell us which teams have never played each other in a WAFL Grand final? Shouldn’t take too long to work out.
Clare v Perth and Swans v Perth have never happened along with the previous mention SD v WP…My guess is the best chance of either of these three combinations occurring anytime soon will be SD v WP
still reckon a SF/EF derby GF would attract the punters more than a SD/WP GF…pretty hard to top a traditional rivalry in terms of emotion and interest…
Ric once again I would like to thank you for your magnificent website & the brilliant job you have done putting it all together. The man hours it must have taken to accumulate it all together must have been enormous & I for one am truly appreciative of the fine work you have done. For WAFL tragics like myself it really is a god send to be able to look up old games from the past and check out the stats/goalkickers etc and I look forward to your Budgets of the Week update also. Great work mate.
Cheers BH much appreciated, yep it sure takes up a fair bit of my time - will be growing it even more over summer, with a fresh new design and more player data included and hopefully a little more user friendly to find things.
