Swan 42: The other thing people should keep in mind about Lock is that him and Mckenzie just swapped ends and they had little support from the other bowllers. This was never the case with Lilliee or Alderman.

According to wikipedia, that great East Freo footballer Des Hoare is still alive, AR.

Can I send him your phone number, so you can discuss Garth’s lack of support?

225 wickets for WA, at 26.9

Sticks Brayshaw was also pretty handy.

Jack: You made me laugh – thanks for pointing me in the direction of Des, he has good figures,

Thankfully someone mentioned the best captain we’ve had - John Inverarity. He’d be the first I pick.

Such a coincidence - I just spoke to Des’ daughter Deb. He’s presently in Adelaide in the air conditioned members.

Exactly JS. I posted a comparison between the number of balls bowled by McKenzie and Johnson where McKenzie had bowled significantly more than Mitchell.

If I was picking a native born side, that is, using the Yorkshire principle, my side would be

John Inverarity (captain)
Mike Hussey
Simon Katich
Kim Hughes
Justin Langer
Rod Marsh
Ian Brayshaw
Bruce Yardley
Graeme Mckenzie
Dennis Lilliee
Terry Alderman

Some variations on the side: If you wanted to pick a side without Brayshaw, I would go for Barry Shephard. If you wanted to leave out Yardley, I would go for Bruce Reid.

Just on Inverarity, he really should have been made captain of Australia in 1977-78 when they all ratted to Packer. He was the senior professional in the country at the time.

One problem with that AR Inverarity wasn’t from NSW or VIC!!

BH- Yep, Simpson did save us against India with a bit of help from the bowllers, but when they got rid of him, harshly after he failled with the bat in the WI, ‘Invers’ should have taken over from him. Had this happened, I think Hughes and Yallop would have had even better careers.
