1984

1984 – This was a good season, everybody won at least six games in the competition. The great peter Featherby returnned to the Lions, Wiley and the buzz to the PFC? On the back of such moves, was Perth expectted to be the big improver for the season?

Yep - 1984 would see the emergence of Subiaco and East Fremantle , and the decline of South Fremantle and probably West Perth & East Perth

Ron Alexander would prove to be the right choice of coach leading a revival from what was widely regarded to be the worst ever Old Easts team at the time of his appointment
Hayden Bunton would also lead Subiaco out of the doldrums with recruiting Australia-wide and some old from within
But ultimately it would be Swan Districts with one final blast from their veterans in a stunning Grand Final first quarter blitz of a young East Fremantle outfit
1984 was probably one of the turning point transition years of the WAFL

Harking back AR I thought they would be but Buzz putting his arm through a plate glass window after another defeat probably put paid to those chances.
Interestingly Perth did beat us at Lathlain Park that season, Rob Wiley was enormous that day from memory albeit fading as the years go by. :frowning:

Can remember Swans having a lot of tight games at Bassendean.Claremont and West Perth and East Freo and Subi.
Stretching my memory now did WP beat Swans twice that year at Basso both games below 1 gol.On the siren a clash between D Kickett + M Rance .Murray got a dislocation in his shoulder.Swans 50th anniversary was a close win over the Shark’s.

Oooohhh ahh!

Painfull memories mainly.

Got the odd bit of excitement. Our opening day Exciting Win at Leederville in a ding dong battle against the Cardies, with Rib Wiley returning and a Promising recruit in Lloyd Richardson.

After getting a Rude Shock at Home against Subi,we Belted East Perth by 81 points, before receiving a Lesson in Class by Swans on Easter Monday, before nearly 13 000.

Two Painfull Close Losses that were Winnable, followed by the Free Booze Debacle and it was all Downhill from there, barring the odd Win.

Rob Wiley’s Loss in the only Public Count at the Entertainment Centre, just rubbed our noses in it and Ian Miller’s tenure was Over.Oh yeah,Buzz made the headlines for mainly the wrong reasons, despite an early flash of Buzz Magic.

Oh Dear, despite the early promise,A False Dawn. :pinch:   :frowning: :woohoo: :S

I’m sure you guys have already jumped in to my site and checked out 1984, but just in case you haven’t here’s the link

Yes Beas, Wiley had 47 possessions that day and a couple of goals I think. It was a huge upset, it could have even been a top versus bottom clash. If we weren’t on the bottom before the game then we were 7th. I’m pretty sure Swans were on top.

Wiley had 44 disposals with one goal, but clearly most dominate player on the ground

That win ended a record 17 game losing streak for Perth against Swans dating back to 1978.

1984

The first quarter of the grand final.

The most gut wrenching painful half an hour of my life!!!

Told the wife to get rid of the dog (because it was black and white) then went for a drive to calm down.

My son (born that year) became a swan’s supporter. I would have taken it better if he told me he was a gay pilot for qantas.

Why was this year brought up ???

Wasn’t exactly an Anniversary Premiership was it,Devonleigh? :silly:

How about 1977 Ric?

And casually gets the pill 38 times plus 8 grabs and 3 goals straight in his first game back vs old easts! He got over 50 touches in one game that year. Despite finishing 2nd last, I think every Subi fan could smell something brewing by the way we finished the year, pushing some top sides in the last few games culminating with a 9 goal win over souths who had a big name side that day and only had to beat us to make the four…that would’ve stung

I reckoned you guys were on the way up,DG.

A pity Putty(Ian Putt),an old boy from Christ Chirch didn’t kick on,especially after Bunts gave him and a few other up and comers a thumbs up on 6PR’s Football World.

Was it a small source of annoyance in finishing 7th?You must have felt you deserved better than that?A close Home Town Decision Loss to West Perth didn’t help and one Bad Quarter at Home blew a great opportunity to knock them off, late in the Season. :side:

Having said that, you guys did Win the Ressies Flag,so something really was brewing.Any big celebrations from that Win over South?Who was your Coach and if I remember correctly, wasn’t that Grand Final Telecast?A Reserves 1st,maybe?

For sure Grassy, I thought he was a solid player with a bright future, probably had too many other good big men to compete with at the time. Mitch Fussell was another who only played a few that year and left. He did well to come back from that bad leg break though.

Maybe deserved better, dunno, but as you said we blew a couple and still copped a couple of good hidings. Tbh I was just happy to be winning a few, kicking some big scores with some big wins and not too many beltings.

Good memory I think it was telecast I probably have got it on an old beta tape somewhere

Ugh!

Beta?Don’t tell Anthony Ackroyd(The Big Gig). He’ll slay ya!

Thanks for your post though. When West Perth beat you in Round 3 by the skin of their teeth,I ssemed to remember a photo of Cardie players embracing each other, having portrayed a get out of Jail look and "We’re Saved!"emotions.

Reminded me of Bob Cribb’s Summation of their lucky escape from you in '81,by the same margin.Only this one was in the Wet.You guys must have hated them the most in those days,as the Cardies were spiralling to Ordinary Status in most of the 80’s,

some great posts on here so thanks to everybody

Grassy – you ask some good questions. The reserves won the premiership from fourth which was a good effort. Paul Wilson played out of full forward. Wayne Loxley was the coach. You may remember he played for Subi and EP; he also won the frairest and best in the Sunday League for Rockingham. He also playedfor Osborne Park.

As for the league side, we improved a lot, but in gneneral we could not cope against the top sides. I do remember beatting SF at Fremantle in at the end of the year.

Reckon Feathers did get 50 Disposals, when Subi CREAMED us by 102 points on Foundation Day Weekend,1984.

Those were the days when a Shitload of Possessions meant something, because most possessions went Forward with Kicks!

He sure did Grassy 52 possessions http://waflfootyfacts.net/season/games/stats.php?GameID=6595

That game was the second and last instance of a team kicking 100+ plus points in a loss of 100 points or more. (The other game was the Swans v Subi (251-127) game in 1979.

It was Subiaco’s highest score ever at that point in time, beaten twice since in 2008 v Peel and 2010 v SF when they scored 207 points in each game, but it remains their highest score vs Perth

Astonishing numbers by the great man 52 disposals in round 10, only dipped under 30 4 times and under 20 twice I think. In an era unlike now where cheap disposals, short chip kicks are the current mode. Feathers was a running machine, no real pace but just wore down his opponents by constantly running at around 1/2 - 3/4 pace all day. He and Wiley were the hardest runners I ever saw, Wiley had a bit more pace on the burst.

Something the Doggies supporters may not want to remember was the fact that Subi dumped them from the finals with a last round win, allowing EP to sneak into 4th spot.

I think we keep reminding them,Senior.

South had a good percentage of nearly 120%.But too many things went wrong and they lost a lot of close ones, when most years before that, they would have normally prevailed.

One their Day,they were Murderous. But a Loss and Daw to West Perth,2 Losses to East Perth after smashing them on Easter Monday.A loss to Claremont on a lousy day involving Interchange problems surrounding Benny Vigona, losing to Wooden Spooners Perth, twice to Swans and Worse still, two losses to bitter rival,East Fremantle, heralding a lean period against Old Easts until 1988.And Subi of course, meant it was never meant to be that year.

Grassy: you could have won your first three games of the season that year. Against the Lions, you had kicked 7.11 by half-time, bad kicking at goal which continued in the second half, and cost you the game. Sometimes teams make you want to tear your hair out

Also, i noticed we had a couple of PFC players, Ashworth and Fotheringham, helpping us out on the day. Big Mick Rea kicked a bag as usual against Subi.
