My favourite year of footy was 1981 LH ..I wish we could have a 1981 WAFL highlights package available to watch like that!

So do I.

Good on the SA diehards for saving their footage. We didn’t. Probably says something about the people who followed both comps. Myself included.

I remember back in the 80’s I argued with a family friend who had come across from SA.

He had followed the SANFL for years and had watched the WAFL in, I guess 82, 83 type time.

He reckoned the SANFL was a slightly better followed comp played a slightly better standard.

Even though, at the time I’d not watched any SANFL, I said that was a load of crap.

Now I’ve watched nearly all 756 SAFootballarchive videos, I can say he was right.

JE, I was wrong and I apologise. Although I still insist mate that we could find 20 footballers in our comp to match 20 footballers in your comp any year, any era. I stand by that.

I recall him also telling me about the day they overfilled Football Park. Once again being the arrogant WA footy fan, I dismissed it. I’ve since learned that it was 100% true.

God only knows how they squeezed in 66,000 people into Football Park for a grand final or why they even allowed it. As soon as I saw the footage for that I knew I’d made an error. Fans are actually on the playing field all the way up to the boundary line. Crazy stuff. But this was before Football Park was all seating - much of it was terraced - so they just kept taking the money at the gate rather than having fans stampede the joint.

A great video of this is on that channel where Rick Davies explains that the crowd was so massive that day that he was stuck in traffic about 1km from the ground and with time running out, he asked a spectator to take the wheel on his behalf while he sprinted the rest of the way to the ground.

The last I heard Rick Davies was living in WA and had been for years. An AFL Hall of Fame inductee with 350 SANFL games to his credit right here in WA. Never even coached here at colts level or been involved in the WAFL in any way. Shame.
