This week against the gummies

Good to see Lockyer back in but otherwise should remain unchanged from 2 weeks ago. Also, Hayden, Kentfield and Schofield all named in the ressies leaving only Braut missing from our best 22 due to injury.

Should soon have our best 22 available and would expect we will get better in the second half of the season. Important to win this one to keep in touch with the top 3 sides. Still lacking in the ruck department and our forward line delivery has generally been atrocious so far!

Jjim its got me beat that after picking Peelmantle apart with smart footy, keeping possession, moving the ball quickly and hitting short targets which took their strong marking backs out of the game, we have reverted to the same hopelessly inefficient long bombing out of the backline and into the forwards. We see Gus, who is a great player and a wonderful long kick, but when we bring the ball in after a point that long bomb seems to be the only plan, you saw how Claremont time and again looked for the short 20 - 30 pass from the kick-in which creates the overlap and the loose man where we were always kicking to a contest and congestion. If we do that against the Gummies it will get ugly. It will be hard enough coping with Teakle and co at the stoppages without continually giving the ball up with mindless long bombs.

SS…there’s quite a few game day issues I have with Wardman. For instance, we had all the momentum in the last quarter against Claremont only for Prescott to put Rogers as a spare down back. At one stage he had the most possessions on the ground during the last quarter by positioning himself to take intercept marks and providing a link out of our forward 50.

What did Wardman do? Nothing…he didn’t man him up with our spare or even get a forward to stand with him to at least provide a 1 on 2 scenario. Then there’s the transition piece into our F50 which as you say, has been abysmal for a couple of years now plus our kick to handball ratio isn’t great either as we tend to over use handball and turn it over.

The club must surely look at Wardman’s tenure if we have another indifferent year.

BC, actually 4 changes from 2 weeks ago:

IN: Lockyer, Sokol, Snadden, Evitt
OUT: Sullivan, Henderson, Morgan, Stergiou

Evitt…just turned 20, 179cm, 80kg. had 18 touches and a goal in last reserves match…from Kingsway JFC

Cheers Ocker. Yes, I made that comment about the same team before the interchange had been reduced down to 4.

I like the blooding of these young blokes as you never know what diamonds in the rough will turn up as long as they give them a decent run at it but on the other hand, I’m not sure why they persevere with Snadden as he hasn’t really fired a shot since coming over from EF.

I think Evitt was out all last season with a knee, good work to get back and crack the senior side already. Snadden yes well you have to reward good form in the ressies I guess, let’s hope he starts to do the same in the seniors because generally he has been playing like Jane whilst looking like Tarzan. Wardman not the sharpest tool in the shed he should have just put one of the 4 blokes that are out this week and were playing shit on Rogers and told him to stick to him like glue and we probably would have won

On the plus side Evitt has lightening hands and seems to be a very good prospect. Gee East freo were good. Haven’t seen footy like that in the wafl for while.

That’s about where things are at JL. They are a 10+ goal better side than us, and most other sides. I thought we had a good crack for the most part, just simply out gunned

Probably worth throwing Clark into the ruck tbh. He seems to know what he’s doing there from the brief glimpse he gave today, he out muscled the bigger cripps and the aggressive janson. Of course it was Teakle who did all of the damage but Clark never went against him. Clark is 195 and 93kg. Eaton 195 86kg. Eaton gets his hands to it but never to our advantage and does fa else around the ground. Clark seems to know how to use his body and is super fit and mobile

That was very disappointing. I’m not sure if it was that East Freo were so good or we were so poor. Probably a combination of both. I haven’t seen a Subi side so devoid of confidence and so badly skilled in a long time. Sokol dropping sodas in the forward 50 and Savigni and Lockyer doing likewise inside D50 resulting in goals can only be a mind set thing.

The “brains trust” decided to isolate Sokal during the third quarter by moving the other forwards up the ground…good idea as he’s very strong and a terrific grab by why did it take so long to figure out our forward structure wasn’t working?

Teakle really showed today the benefit of having a genuine ruckman as he gave East Freo mids silver service and followed up with 3 goals just to rub it in and go close to BOG. We were smashed at the clearances putting the backs under immense pressure.

Up forward we have 3 smalls in Alone, Golding and Robbins who didn’t kick a goal between them. That’s fine, but they need to also display defensive forward pressure and that didn’t happen with only 4 tackles each. As for Snadden, I think I could beat him in a one on one and I’m in my sixties…soft as butter.

Enough of the rant as I thought the Hickmott’s had a crack, Clark worked hard and Evitt didn’t look out of place in the seniors. Schofield, Hayden and Kentfield all got through the ressies so can’t be far away and Braut was the runner so he must be close as well coz by Christ, we need them. Locks looked like he did a hammy which isn’t great…all in all a pretty ordinary day.

A good rant BC. I reckon we can move the pieces around a bit, Borchett down back, Clark into the ruck, Golding into the middle and so on, but we’re still going to be out run and maybe out skilled.

I thought we tried a lot of things, gave it our best, were in touch at 3/4 time, but they were just out of our league. it was actuality good to see 24 goals scored in a hard fought match.

How were the umpires Lads ?

Yes Johnny against old easts for sure, we will never beat them this season, not when it counts anyway, but vs other sides we have to throw things around imo. Eaton has a huge leap but he’s no ruckman he has no rucking iq
Clark looked good there for the couple of minutes he was there. Like I said he’s strong af and knows how to use it. Maybe he can turn into a bit of a Dela. Clark might not win alot of centre bounces but he would be hard to keep up with around the ground and would be damaging. Eaton would make a good key defender I recon especially now with Lockyer looking to be out of action again. We have no height down there, or anywhere else tbh. Also Farone down back needs a stint in the ressies imo. He spends too much time arguing with the maggots

Didn’t really notice them Leedy, if we won the count it didn’t help us much mate

Agree with your comment re Eaton DG. He needs to play down back and maybe promote Bryce McDonald up from the ressies at 202cms and 90kg he can at least compete with the big boys. Also Kentfield needs to come in for Borchet, Hayden for Farone and Schofield for Snadden.

Like you said BC a good ruckman can’t be understated. Been like that forever. I would have liked to see how Clark would have gone against Teakle. I doubt Teakle would have been able to out muscle him and take clean possession and goal like he did a couple of times against Eaton and Borchet. Obviously he would probably not win a lot of centre bounce taps but at least we could play knowing that. Around the ground he would be too mobile for most rucks. With Eaton the mids don’t know what they are getting, sometimes he wins it and taps it to nowhere and other times he loses. Hopefully we are on the hunt for a good ruck for next year. Agreed with your other changes

TBH with those 2 late goals in the 3rd quarter, bringing the margin to 18 points, I was expecting Subi to come home with the fresher legs after their 2 week break compared to EF 6 day break. Instead it was EF with the fresher legs kicking 7 in the last to run away from Subi.

Considering McGuire was EF premiership ruckman ans is no out n out ruckman, with Dixon as his chop out, and he is no out n out ruckman…not sure having a specialist ruckman is the be all and end all. Teakle was fantastic yesterday for sure…but Clarke and the two Peel rucks, picked up big numbers in regards to tap outs v EF last year, yet EF won v both sides because they were better organised in the midfield set up.

Yes Freeze we have won flags too without a recognised ruck but it’s a bit easier to win them without one when you have a fast RR midfield

Firstly well done to EF and Bill, they were dominant for most of the game and they are a fair way off being at full strength, as are we with 4 key mids missing in Schoey, Braut, Kentfield and Hayden missing. The lack of a specialist ruckman was clearly shown yesterday with Teakles absolute dominance at the stoppages and around the ground. I thought I had seen the WAFL’s best ruck in Eastland the previous game, but Teakle is next level and as others have said, how good it would have been to have seen Teakle v a fit Zac Clarke, but I’m dreamin’. Cant question Eatons commitment but his footy IQ is not quite there and Borch is a shadow of past seasons and is totally out of his depth in the ruck, need to give the big ressies lad an opportunity to dee what he can give even the young bloke Duff looks to be a goer and played well in the scratchy v SD. Our backs were under siege for most of the game with EF super fast slick ball movement, they were able to walk through our weak tackling efforts and deliver with little pressure. We are tragically slow across the ground and our ball movement is erratic at best. So frustrating to see Gus continually long bomb it to a contest when kicking in from a behind, then watch EF kick ins look for the short 20-30m pass and set up the overlap and loose man. May have a fair bit to do with lack of work ethic by some of the mids to spread and create options, that can certainly be said about the forwards compared to EF who had all 6 forwards continually on the move when their backs and mids had the footy. Either Wardman has no clue or the players aren’t listening. As i’ve said several times, we took Peel apart with short fast ball movement, keeping the ball away from their talls, we did that very occassionaly v Ef and looked much better but did not persist and dropped back into the useless long bomb game which is just lazy footy. SF next week who are going along nicely so unless we change things up we will be looking at 2 and 4 and losing contact with the 5. 4 games in a row at Leedo and we must win a minimum of 2 of those, cant see us getting within 10 goals of EP but must look to win v SF and SD to have any hope of staying in touch.
