The Sebit reunion

Very curious to see how new Peel recruit[oops sorry Fremantle!] Sebit Kueck, fares against his ex Royals teamates, and whether an excellent performance can elevate him ahead of the likes Taberner and Treacy, and see him make his much anticipated AFL debut after the mid season bye.

They did recruit Sebit to play AFL didn’t they???

Surely he should play for the Royals if/when not playing for the Dockers until the end of the season.

I’m pretty sure it was a like for like replacement for Derksen, lets see how honorable their intentions are,and i stand to be corrected on the length of his contract, and see what they do when it expires at the end of the year.

I see East Perth have denied Peel permission for Kuek to play league against you guys this week. Good on the club I say as clearly this was a back door way by Freo to get an outstanding long term project player outside the normal draft.

Thats interesting, how are they able to do that? I thought once they are drafted that’s it apart from a finals appearance. If EP make the finals they may have to ask permission from Freo to let him play, which could also get interesting.

I think that under the WAFL Competition rules & regs only WCE’s mid season draftees are eligible to play for their original WAFL Club if they are not playing in an AFL game (but that seemed to require the WAFL club to take them for the rest of the year / which seems unlikely). This does not seem to apply to the Dockers as they are in a partnership arrangement rather than stand alone.
However, the WAFL rules allow for any player drafted in the AFL mid season draft (even interstate) to play finals with their original WAFL club (subject to approval of WAFL & AFL clubs and the WAFC & AFL) (presumably that how Parker played for Souths last year).
I think that the arrangement with the AFL and WAFC (ie not within the WAFL Rules & Regs) is that a WAFL club can object to a player playing for WCE or Dockers againt them, if the player was drafted from their club in the mid season AFL Draft.
if that’s right East Perth are within their rights to object to Kuek playing this week.
East Perth , Peel and Dockers will presumably act in their own interests as they are clearly entitled to do. But, it would be reasonable and probably expected that East Perth would object.

As for the Dockers recruiting Kuek-
first we can all gripe about the reasons for the mid-season AFL Draft and it’s impact on the WAFL Clubs but that argument is lost - the rules are the rules - and I would expect every AFL club to act in their best interests in pursuit of AFL victories and I would be very surprised if the Dockers would make any recruiting decision just to piss off a WAFL club.
Secondly, the Dockers have some history in taking their own NGA players and to be patient with their development (even if they are not ready to immediately play AFL) (Eric Benning is perhaps the most recent example). They have also taken long term views with other talls and skinny forwards in the 190+ height bracket (eg Meek and Sturt). The Dockers also have the luxury of taking time to develop a few players eg Treacy and Amiss (before he was injured) because they are doing well in the AFL. The WCE have not been as good, in my opinion, in their NGA selections (and Kuek was NGA available to WCE).
thirdly, Dockers seem to be drafting for pace and might be reaching the end of their patience with Sturt. Kuek fits the bill in both those areas.
fourthly, the Royals fans posting on here seem to think Kuek is a gun WAFL player (without whom East Perth have a less potent forward line). So why wouldn’t the Dockers be interesting in recruiting such a player? Good on them for giving a go to a “mature age” player who has had to do some hard yards in the WAFL.
finally, it seems to me that the biggest impediment on Kuek playing AFL (and probably stopped him playing more senior WAFL football earlier) is that he is not a full time professional and his body is light. Neither of those things can be changed unless he is on an AFL list. Chicken and egg.
all credit to Kuek who by all accounts is a ripping kid and good on the Dockers for giving him a crack. Even if his recruitment stops East Perth squeaking into the top 5 this year and even if he only last this year at the Dockers (2 things that are not presently known), the likelihood is that he’ll come back to East Perth a better player than he is now and at a time when the Royals are better than they are now.

No factor,i totally disagree with your sentiments, this has been an abuse of the whole process, the mid season draft was introduced to help AFL clubs cope with shortcomings on the list brought on by a spike in injuries,i.e,Teakle at P.Adelaide who obviously have a dearth of talls, which is why he is debuting tonight. It is not the time to pickup project players through the backdoor especially when you’ve got a thin injury list like the Dorkers. You also go on to say if he gets promptly delisted he will automatically come back a better player, but i can tell this assumption has already proven to be false,as Tom Gorter was rookie listed during the alignment, and after he was delisted he came back an inferior player and is currently playing in the bush.

I agree that the AFL’s mid season draft was introduced to limit the impact of long term injuries and premature retirements by allowing AFL clubs the opportunity to replenish their lists for the back half of the campaign (see www.afl.com.au/news/131710/mid-season-draft-your-questions-answered) but that’s not how the rules were written. And it is the letter of the law rather than it’s vibe that counts.
Is it a rort? Maybe. But if it helps a player fulfil their footy dreams, especially if they have shown ability at WAFL League level, then I am happy to live with it, as, it seems are most WAFL coaches (at least publicly) and even though others would rather snuff out that chance in favour of potential WAFL Glory.
As for the Gorter eg. I agree Gorter did not come back a better player but I still think Kuek will be better for spending time as a pro.
Time will tell.
Even though I acknowledge the sponsorship and other off field implications for the WAFL clubs, I also don’t think it’s the worst thing to happen to a WAFL club either. Every year we are told Subi is the recruit’s club of choice because the recruit thinks playing there will help them get a shot in the AFL. I also think that there will be positives for the WAFL Clubs with large African communities in their zones if Kuek inspires a few kids of African decent to play our great game.
But for now I think it’s a great thing for Kuek and I hope more young men get to follow in his footsteps.

Well lets just see if he is a short term speculative pick, selected mainly for Peel as a replacement for Wade Derksen who was the Dockers initial No1 target, and remembering its in Freo’s interests for Peel to go as deep into the WAFL finals as possible,or they actually do believe that Sebit is a long term prospect and reward him with a longer contract, which is an opportunity for Sebit i wouldn’t begrudge, but either way all this stuff should be done in the pre season drafts.

God you are clutching at straws Factor, just admit that it’s bs what your mob have done here

I’m not sure what you mean by my mob DG. I don’t barrack for the Dockers.
Personally I don’t think it is wrong for an AFL club to pick Kuek in the mid-season draft and I’ve explained why I think it’s reasonable for the Dockers to pick him.
I personally would prefer that more successful WAFL players get drafted rather than the speculative picks from the Victorian colts comp and that is more likely to happen with a mid season draft. Whether you like the mid season draft if not it is here and I think it at least has a silver lining for “mature age” WAFL players.
Subi gets more taken than any one, do you disagree that one reason players are attracted to Subi is because they think it gives them the best chance to get into the AFL as a mature ager?

Fair enough Factor.
The mid season draft is good for the players but is it all about the players? If they are good enough they should get picked up anyway. Why cant they just have a mature age draft in November and have bigger lists?
Definitely, that’s because we train harder

Whoops, I forgot about the hard training factor. My bad. ?
Personally I’d like to see the draft age lifted and bigger lists. But I think there’ll be peace in the Middle East sooner.

I think we may’ve found a replacement for Sebit today,Richard Graham’s boy Tommy, really straightened us up and we looked a different team.

Fantastic win by EP today, well done to the EP boys…I see EP have done some last minute recruiting before June 30th…Page, Palfrey and Bonomelli all coming in for some league footy…good luck to all 3 boys.

I think you blokes got Eddie Simpson as a direct swap for Bonomelli, whose stats for you guys doesn’t fill me with a lot of optimism.

Thanks, Freez, and may I reciprocate by saying well done to your Sharks on another strong win.
In such an even season, being able to win the “close ones” will be the difference between finishing 1-2-3 or 4-5-6 …
From an East Perth perspective, it was a gutsy effort to honour the 1972 and 2002 premiership teams who had a combined 50/20-year reunion at the club today (and a fantastic function it was).
It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a more committed and desperate Royals side.
After Claremont kicked the first two goals in the opening five minutes of the final quarter to reduce the deficit to 19 points, there was a danger that a relatively young side would lack the self-belief to go on and win.
However, full credit to the boys for regrouping and winning reasonably comfortably in the finish.

History is littered with examples of players who’ve excelled at their second club after struggling at their first, royallucky, so let’s wish Nick Bonomelli all the best if he’s indeed moved from Old Easts to Young Easts.
Good luck also to Eddie Simpson … except when he plays against East Perth.

I see Sebit Kueck is going gangbusters at the Dockers AFL full time professional football factory, where he has amassed in 3 league and 1 reserve games for Peel, the princely total of 3 goals.
