Not sure what happened to Mayo but that’s a big out. Also, Borchet to CHB is a good move. Pleasing to see Schofield, Kentfield and Hayden all named in the starting 18.

I think the changes are justified given the recent below par performances. We are past the point of being cautious, just 13 games including tomorrow to turn things around, need to win 8 of those 13 to have any chance of finals. Hopefully Borch can turn things around at CHB, I like the look of the forward line with Schoey, Robbins and Evitt, all three with pace and good skills. On the bench, obviously Rohde will be one, Ash who should never have been dropped, Kelman again for pace and Alone who will likely go to Ducker Schloithe. Absolute must win as we wont get within a bulls roar of the Ferals and SD will be a very tough assignment.
I think we might get spanked tomorrow but really good to see young Hayden back in. It’ll take a few games but reckon he’ll be a big plus off half back as the season goes on.
FMD how did Snadden get another game, he’s a very good ressies player but cant make the step up to league. has the physique and skills but …would have Alone ahead of Snadden every day of the week.
On the plus side, Robbo named best player. It was a good game of football and wafl wonderland added a bit . Can’t believe I’m saying that. It was a good day all round. Apart from the result.
I was sitting up the back of the grandstand with my daughter and after half time a few of the ressies sat behind me including Ben Golding and Connor Faraone. I heard them commenting on how bad our skills were today. Well boys, here’s a news flash, it has been atrocious all year with missed targets, poor decision making and worse execution.
We could and probably should have won today when you look at scoring shots, inside 50s, time in possession and so on but the turnovers killed us and let Souths off the hook time and time again. We still haven’t sorted out our entry into F50 but at least they weren’t bombing it in, they were lowering their eyes and kicking it to South’s defenders instead but at least the ball carriers were hitting someone.
Better players were the Hickmotts, Clark had a crack, Robbins some good things, Corbett probably played his best game for the club and I like the way young Evitt keeps presenting. A dirty day which also saw Kyron Hayden do a hammy or quad in his first seniors game back from an ACL.
This week was umpires appreciation round and I really enjoyed the way they gave Souths 20 free kicks to our 9 which included some very soft calls right in front of Souths goals. Thank you guys for all your service as it certainly influenced the result, but probably not as much as our poor skills execution.
Yep terrible skills. Robbins best game I think. One of the few with genuine pace, we need more like him. Savigni looked good in the forward line late, he gave us a target with his strong hands, probably worth persevering with. Hayden can’t catch a break although hammy’s are common early in acl comeback’s
Corbett played really well. Unlucky to be caught holding the ball in the last quarter. No real prior, but the ball dropped in an accusing way. Evitt looks a likely type.
Wardman was really passionate at 3/4 time. Thought he was pretty impressive.
Agree with previous posts, bad skills and poor decision making. Cant question the effort but our inability to hit targets cost us the game as much as poor goal front accuracy and a rediculous imbalance in frees. Once again we had a 195cm ruckman up against a 205cm ruckman with a reach like an orangatang, hence the dominance in hitouts to SF. They had 54 more kicks and 33 less handballs which confirms their short chip and run game plan which regularly creates the overlap and loose man. We tried that but the thing is, like us, they kicked to red and white jumpers!!
Robbo was good along with Evitt who looks the goods and will no doubt spend some time in the mids later in the season and next season, quick, skilled and smart. Schoey looked classy in patches and along with Kentfield will be better for the run. terrible luck for Hayden, was sitting near his mum who conformed it was a hammy, thats after the ACL and then doing a bad ankle at work in the pre-season, cant take a trick. Mayo was out with hamstring tightness so just precautionary.
Ash once again had a ripper game in the ressies, how he doesn’t get a game and Snadden dose is beyond me. A few others had real dirty days including Rohde who couldn’t do a thing right. he’s far better than that and will work through it. Still look slow and the group will need the week off to really have a look at whats happening to basically the same team (apart from Clarke) that got to a prelim last season. Then it’s the ferals, if we get within 10 goals of them it will be a miracle.
SS…Outs from last year’s finals side:
Clarke, Giro, Walters, Stainsby, Braut, Heal, Tholstrup
.
Ins this year:
Clark, Foley, Corbett. (and Mayo…now fit).
The loss of Clarke was huge because not only did he dominate the hit outs during the year, he was also like another mid-fielder “almost” getting Delahunty size possessions around the ground. It was noticeable that when Peel’s big talls put the clamps on him in the preliminary last year that Subi struggled. I think his dominance covered up a lot of cracks last year and I honestly thought finishing third flattered us somewhat with no chance of beating EF if we’d got through.
Giro has genuine pace and run, something we have little of, so again another huge out for us in my opinion.
Walters, whilst past his very best, was still a very strong body in the clinches and could pull of some unpredictable things at times.
Stainsby often got the “stopper” role against dangerous opposition small/mid forwards and generally did it well even if not getting it a lot himself.
Braut was thrown here and there as usual and was a handy spare parts man even if not his best season…hopefully he can contribute soon this year once finally fit.
Heal missed a number of games during the year but was still the old wise head down back as we know and just gave us that guy who could play on talls or mids.
Tholstrup had flair and was the excitement package in the games he was available for us prior to getting drafted.
In summary, I think Subi try very hard each week on the back of around 10 very good players but we lack the depth and class of a number of other clubs at this point in time.
I see on the WAFL injury hub, Hayden is listed as an indefinite out with a hammy and Lockyer the same with a knee. Not good for either and hope they’re not as bad as they sound.
I think I said previously that we need to have a full complement to be anywhere near competitive with the top sides and this doesn’t look likely at the moment. Praying that neither Greg Clark or Ben Sokol get injured in tomorrow’s state game as we need to be at our best to trouble East Perth next Saturday.
