Softest & Hardest WAFL player you've seen

Griffin from Swans was a tough customer and a young man called Nathan Brookes from EP was very wild. I remember him crawling around on the WACA turf after a night game looking for his teeth.

I cant believe I forgot about Dwayne Griffin LB  sheesh he was hard on the field!

Shame on you BH for your omission.

Hardest I can think of are Ian Dargie, Mark Haynes, - maybe David Snow?
Softest Brendan Fewster

hardest was Basil Campbell , scariest was Basil Campbell , freaky scary but pretty bloody good was Basil Campbell

Softest hmmmmmm plenty nowadays

Actually I should add here that the “fastest hands” tag goes to Maurice Rioli , Mister Magic’s fists were quicker than the wind when he let them go

Ask Jimmy Krakouer how fast they were , probably ask Mark Jackson too although that dopey prick had that many hit him in the head that day he wouldn’t remember I suppose

Hardest player without doubt was Stephen Michael, in my eyes of course. Softest, mmm not really worried about that takes balls to play at the elite level.

Thought you would rate Dargs Freeze especially after stitching up both of your Solin bros at the same time on his league debut as an unknown :stuck_out_tongue:

Hardest Basil or TI…

Softest. anyone at Subi or WP in the late 70’s early 80’s., plus a few Claremont poofs.

Softest of all time any league anywhere in Australia.
Stephen Smeath talk about jumping at shadows.

hahaha…yep, Smeath was a fairy alright…

Bazza: You might have had a few toughies at South in those days, but toughies aside, you only won one flag with one of the best sides ever seen in WA.

I guess it all depends on what you consider tough. I didn’t think Basil Campbell was particularly tough…nasty and a bash artist yes…tough, not sure about that. Guys like Haydn Bunton, Craig Wulfe, Shane Beros, Ian Dargie were hard nosed in and under types which imo is what tough is all about…even Ali Pickett was tough in his own way given he was fearless against guys much bigger than he was.

DG, met Dargie at a 21st many years back, he was going out with the sister of the fella Larry Bird mentioned Nathan Brookes, who I was mates with at high school. Think Dargie had won his Sandover by then, nice bloke, good footballer and good chat…as for Brooksie being tough…yeah definitely one fella not to piss off when doing one to one drills at footy training…TBH though was surprised he played league, because at high school he was an ok player at best…late developer I guess, played at Cl too from memory?

Sorry about replying to my own post, but have had second thoughts on the softest player. It had to be Brian Adamson from the Garlic Munchers. How he ever made state football I will never know. One of the few players I have seen back pedal on that stage many times. Very soft and will say no more.

That’s the spirit Anchor…great to read some of these posts here…never expected this thread to be so educational which shows how much we miss identifying these type players from other clubs such can be the focus on our own. It’s hard to follow the other 8 and even tougher when you have no interest in half of them. As always appreciate the insights of the Oz footy cru on here

Welcome Brian Taylor, didn’t know you joined the forum :stuck_out_tongue:

By the way Baz Souths have the sofest of all time in that era Peter Thorpe

Don’t worry about Thorpey,at least he didn’t drop the soap like the Claremont boys,

LOL yeah. The cardies at that time ..true,

During the golden era I reckon Swans an EP had some hard nuts, and I hate to say it even old easts,

Mossy was a big fairy,

I wouldn’t be so sure of that, tried to jump in the crowd after doing a “Conca” on someone in a Resi’s GF against East Perth and I think big Daniels IIRC correctly was going to kill him

Spot on, courage is the real form of toughness. Basil and Boucher were fearsome but would they be throwing their bodies around if they were 30 kg lighter? Perhaps, perhaps not. And that is why I’m yet to see a tougher player than ken hunter. Dean laidley is another that deserves mention.

Hardest currently playing is Wulff or Bristow
Softest Ray Bartholomew
