Shield Prospects 19/20

if we could get 100 in front it could be a good last day.

4 wickets down, 4 runs behind…be looking for a lead over 150 mate…great achievement considering that strong attack of Victoria’s…Phillippe seems to be developing quite nicely down at 6…tho definitely a top 4 batsman…Bancroft and Whiteman both struggling…the latter needs a score for sure…great to see Kelly back too…he and Richardson are the two most talented of the up n coming bowlers on the Aussie shield scene…with the latter unlucky with that shoulder injury…Aust seems to have a multitude of good fast bowler depth in their kitty…be great if Pucovski and Phillippe can be integrated into the Aussie batting line up sooner rather than later…

Should be an interesting day tomorrow. Sean Marsh obviously likes being captain, great knock by him and with the failures of other candidates around the country this innings will undoubtably put him back on the selectors radar at least. Good support given also by Phillipe and Inglis to give WA a commanding lead. Getting Harris before stumps was a bonus and if the bowlers can winkle out 3 batsmen in the pre-lunch session in the morning they may be able to put the Vics under a bit of pressure which would be a nice change from recent years. Odds are probably on a draw though but Voges would be a lot happier with this effort than the game against Tasmania

well done WA – especially Marsh and the bowllers.

and belt it away they did
where has this been jeez
would be a while since WA have bashed the Viccos like that

yes I reckon its been a few years Southerner. Hopefully they can build on this and challenge for the shield this year. Apart from Marsh’s brilliant double century which obviously set up the victory, it was a team effort with Stonis, Phillipe, Cartwright and Inglis all contributing with the bat and Richardson, Kelly, Moody, Agar and Stonis all chipping in from the bowling point of view. The only change I would make for the next game is to bat Phillipe at the top of the order and slot D’arcy Short in at 6. Sam Whiteman as an opener just isn’t working and I think the combination of Bancroft and Phillipe would be better.

Well said above fellas.
The main point I liked out of the game was we showed PATIENCE especially with the bat, the Vics bowled well but we hung in and didnt throw our wickets away as emphasised by the amount of balls our batsmen chewed up for their runs and we eventually wore them down.
Would like to see more of it!

Just checked the records, in the last 10 years the score has been 11 wins to Victoria, 6 draws and just 5 wins to WA ( including this one). One of the draws was a shield final which Victoria won of course being the home team

Gee that double century really must open the door for a test return for Marsh…no one doubts his ability when on song…just his consistency drives fans nuts…great support as folk have mentioned from the middle order too…totally agree about the Whiteman logic as an opener…can’t see Voges throwing Phillipe to the wolves just yet…been super consistent so far…plenty of time for him to open…give him a season to find his feet…I guess Short must be next off the rank…but is he a first class opener?..

Not a great start in the match against QLD at the Gabba after being sent in to bat both openers Bancroft & Whiteman were out for Ducks (Whiteman a Golden Duck) to be 2/2 in only the 2nd over the game but have steadied somewhat to be 2/58 at Lunch.
Bancroft out for the 3rd time in 3 Shield matches this summer caught at leg slip/leg gully, the boy has some major technical deficiencies that continually get exposed in red ball cricket.
Also when are these clowns at the WACA going to learn that Whiteman is NOT a first class OPENER!

while that idiot is in charge - never mate

WA all out in their first innings for 332 with the youngster Cam Green top scoring on 87*.
Not a bad recovery after losing both openers for Ducks at 2/2.

Openers ??? not even the plastic tip from a bootlace
Jeez mate they’ve got two potential powerhouses in Short & Phillippe who in any other state would have had near on 2 years experience by now
but WA selects two spuds

Queensland absolutely bossing this game now and showing how inadequate WA’s total of 332 was. Luckily Green and the other bowlers pulled the side out of a massive hole at 7-171 but the Qlds top order have shown WA’s batsmen up for their incompetence. Stonis continues to make 40s and 50s but just can’t go on with it. Bancroft keeps getting out the same way, Whiteman is just not an opener, how many more failures does he have to have for Voges to realise this? Queensland will be aiming to bat most of the day tommorrow, get a lead of 150 plus and then put WA under the pump on day 4 a bit like WA did against the Vics last match.

Agree on Stonis - he does get starts and from a technique perspective looks ok. Perhaps batting at 6 or 7 and playing as a genuine all rounder is a better fit for him. Bancroft, well his stats are something to look at - if you take out his first shield match back from suspension (made 138no and 86) his last 7-8 first class matches (including the 2 tests in England) then it looks pretty ordinary. But with Langer, Voges and Steve Waugh being around these days they keep pumping him up. As for Whiteman as an opener? - well the people responsible for selecting should get the chop before he does.
Queensland well placed now - interesting day coming up tomorrow.

Guys like Mitch Marsh and Stoinis aren’t good enough to bat top 6 at test level, yet at the next level down command a top 5 spot…and their batting averages and lack of tons reflect this…bit of a conundrum here…as for the openers…Bangers is in a right state run wise…whilst Whiteman is a wicketkeeper who bats, not a batsman who keeps…

Are there any decent specialist batsmen in grade cricket?..I hear Murray Goodwin’s son is a beauty… only young tho…17/18?

Jayden Goodwin is 17 Freeze but if he is scoring runs as an opener get him in.
Jake Carder is another specialist opener been in the squad for a few years now, but they are preferring to open with a keeper at the top of the order.
Can see him doing a Harris, Rogers, D.Hussey, Katich, Stoinis, Shipperd, Brayshaw, Fitzgerald, et al and pissing off to another state before long if he keeps on getting overlooked, cant blame them either!

I see WA is at it again losing 3 wickets in 7 balls in their second innings to be 4 for 39 and still 40 behind Qland’s first innings total. Another outright loss looming large here.

Yep and with Carthorse at the crease that pretty much means that it’s 5 down.

Hey our esteemed all rounder took 3 wickets with the ball today Ooolll (as did our other A-R Stoinis)
Mind you Bancroft even chimed in with 1 with the rankest of long hops imaginable…as the old saying goes- “shit gets wickets”!!
