Second Test v England

I would have thought if you drop Lyon you pick Webster who can bowl offies or medium fast and very accomplished with the bat and brilliant in the field. Maybe Lyon was not 100% fit after copping a Jofra Archer special on the hip lower rib area which is stupid for a lower order batsmen not to wear protective gear. That impeded Lyon hugely in the Perth test.

According to Lyon he is filthy he was dropped, so he obviously he put his hand up to play.
If you are not picking him surely the replacement had to be Webster who bowls off spin (and medium pace) as the attack (Starc excluded) has looked very pedestrian and same old. Neser was average in the Shield game here last month, whilst Doggett bowled utter rubbish just constantly digging it in short no doubt under instruction from the clueless coaching staff!

Was it really worth it. 60 runs!!!. Embarrassing from Smith. And I have always been a massive fan of his, but gee that was a disaster.

Smith did the same thing in the Perth test, Set defensive fields against Carse and Atkinson and instructed his bowlers to bowl short. Gave away 60 needless runs which could have been vital, but he got away with that one thanks to Head

There’s a History of it,that’s happened all too often,to care to remember. But it comes back like a recurring Nightmare, that you think, they’re surely playing to Instruction from a higher authority!

Good first days test cricket. So far the pink ball has played well.Great partnership by Root and Archer.
Well done to Joe on his first 100 in Australia.
Ronald Mac wanted to play Cummins. But was overruled by the selectors.
Lyons not happy he didn’t play. And now had an ancle injury,in the nets.Got a straight drive in his ancle.
If the test gets into day 3,4 or 5.Looks like the wicket will spin.

Very strange ending to the day where the skipper wasn’t prepared to trust his openers for a few overs, obviously they weren’t good enough to block out a few overs. They lost the plot completely and lost focus on trying to break that last wicket stand resulting in a 60 odd run partnership that could well decide the outcome.
Root played an excellent innings thoroughly deserving his 1st ton in Oz, under massive pressure and expectations from the British cricketing public and moreso from their press.
Starc was superb again but not much bowling depth under him in this innings at last. Back to a proper test match that will hopefully last into the 5th day. Desperately need Capt Pat and Hazels back asap. Long way to go yet and plenty of time to turn things around.

Its a stark reminder ( pardon the pun) about how thin Australias bowling resources are after the 4 that have been carrying the attack for the past decade move on. Could be a very tough couple of years for the test team.
Having said that Jhye Richardson and Xavier O’Neill are getting amongst the wickets in the Australia A game in Brisbane at the moment. Maybe there is some hope

Agree in the main, but I’m not sure Haze has much time left, with recurring injuries.

Mikeh, problem is, Cummins, Starc, Hazlewood and Lyon have taken over 1500 test wickets at a decent economy of mid - late 20’s…how do you move them on?, especially if they are fitter then the younger crowd coming through…Bartlett, Morris, and Richardson struggle to stay fit…and time will tell if Beardman, Vidler et al are more resilient…so far not so.

Yeah,I imagine the younger crew does struggle to stay fit, being "managed"by a Certain mob.

Reckon Hazelwood isn’t far off retiring. From Test and Shield Cricket at least. His bod might be able to hold up in 20/20’s,…maybe.

Maybe these sports doctors and the younger mob need to go back to old fashioned training, run 10 km per day and bowl for 90 minutes and come back and do it tomorrow.

Bowling is a unique artform, and doing it every day is the only way to attune the body to doing it consistently

There you go mikeh…some life in the Aust next line bowlers yet…though Renshaw goes for 8…young Kellaway continuing his rise up the Aussie opener to be ranks…good to see Richo back taking poles…if onlythis fella could stay fit.

Nice start by Aust in the main game…sport is such a life leveller…Head at one stage 3 off 33, before getting out for 33 of 43…just goes to show you are only as good as your last innings I guess.

Freeze Konstas also got a ton for NSW,

Oh and i see Hoff has had an injury setback with Achillies issues.

I think the selectors would love Richardson to stay fit, I can see him coming in to the team somewhere for the 4th or 5th test

Mate the Konstas haters will find their narrative…it was only v Whitney, Sandhu etc…the kid is 19/20…not many that age play test cricket that early, especially open…he has a far way to go for sure…but hopefully he find’s his way, along with others in Kellaway, Dixon, Peake, Goodwin, Wyllie etc…the cupboard isnt bare, just in that cocoon stage…

Green absolutely dumb way to get out. Carse did exactly what I was thinking after the previous ball. If you see a batter stepping back so early why wouldn’t you just pitch it up on the stumps. Whammo
