Season 2023

A good win in the scratchy today against the bogans by about 7 goals. You can’t take too much out of these pre-season games but I’d sooner win them than lose. Only goal kickers on the WAFL website, so if anyone went a bit of a rundown would be most appreciated.

I went to the shield final. We’re almost there in that game. Gutsy batting by Turner. surprised that we won down at basso. Promising. I’m hearing some swans supporters were getting pretty excited about season 23.

Also missed the game but notice some best players added now. Kitchin, Wagenknect, Snadden and Connor Farone. Promising to see Tholstrup kicked a couple of goals too.

Injury list from the WAFL website. I’m not sure when it was posted so these guys could be a week or two advanced. Also, no sign of Braut, Borchet and co on this list or in the preseason scratchies and not hearing anything coming out of the club by way of a pre-season update.

Lachlan VANIRSEN Hamstring 14 Weeks
Jacob EVITT Knee Season
Kyle STAINSBY Hips 1-2 Weeks
Jordan LOCKYER Knee 7-8 Weeks
Jack MAYO Knee 2-3 Weeks

I wonder what the plans are for this week?
only 4 teams are playing…us v chooks (9.30am saturday) and swans v demons.
im sure they have seen enough for round 1 selections and will rest a few guys in readiness for the season proper!

Good question Coogee. I guess we’ll just have to wait for the teams to get posted on the WAFL website to know. I might even head up to Leedy on Saturday and take a look.

Did ex EF defender Chris Scott ever come down to Subi? Pretty sure he is good mates with ex Rover boys in Nevill and Alone.

Think that WAFL injury list is bit off point BC, its got Boekhorst as “test”…that surely can’t be right…be nice if it was true though.

Freeze, good to see your back in from the cold!

I hope that injury list is wrong, it has Vanirsen out for 14 weeks with a hammy? Good to see Braut on the ins list.
20 in’s for the scratchy so almost a complete team change over. Have missed the first 2 scratchies but will be there tomorrow. Fine cloudy and 27 max tomorrow in Perth.

Hey mate. Welcome back from purgatory. I hope you’ve learned your lesson.

Cheers boys, looking like some exciting footy coming out of Subi this year…you gotta love watching colts eligible players strutting their stuff on the league stage…young talls in Kentfield and Tholstrup definitely ones to keep an eye on…

Think this scratchy is a must view for subi supporters. Will be there incognito.

Promising for the lions. Love their 1973 jumper. That’s a good start, for a start . We played our reserves team. We were reasonably competitive against a very strong Eagles team. I liked Corey bellouard, Jaxon McGowan, jaimon Alone, and I think Robert Hanson.

Im getting more optimistic about the season by the day.

We have plenty of talent coming thru. Dont under estimate our ressies flag last year. Most of them 22 or under…they are ready!

Was a good effort from what was essentially the reserves team against an afl loaded WCE team. Zac Clarke played an awesome first half and will be a real asset, Robbie Hansen Jnr was also very impressive , liked the spirit and commitment shown with the eagles only really kicking away in the last 15 minutes of the game.
Disappointed I didn’t get to see the recruits but will save that for the season proper. Unfortunately I will miss the game against Perth but looking forward to the season.Go Lions!!,

Just 5 regular league players from last year, that includes Clarke, against 13 listed WCE, so a very good effort by essentially a reserves outfit. Clarke & Rohde sat out the second half and Sok for the last qtr and a half. Clarke showed he will be a massive asset by getting first hands on the footy at stoppages, plus his marking up forward and excellent field kicking will make him a handfull for opposition teams. Kitch Giro, the Hickmonts, Hayden and Schoey and the rest of the mids group will enjoy having him there. The young rucks that took over in the second half also performed well and will benefit from Clarke’s mentoring.
I thought the tackling pressure was very good and part of the reason for the WCER inaccuracy at goal where they were mostly under good pressure. Mcgowan looks ready for league, fast strong with great disposal, Robbie Hansen was dangerous around goals a very clever player who knows his forward craft. Mullane looked to have a serious shoulder injury, sounds like it’s not the first time so dont expect to see him for many weeks which is sad as he’s a talent, Braut had his first outing and looked rusty but had his normal aggressive attack at the footy which we missed last year. Very solid team effort, we faded as the WCER fulltime pro’s fitness took over, but a very solid effort. There will be plenty of pressure for spots in the ones as this group of ressies and colts continue to improve.

Now I know it’s just a scratch match, but if the WCER get umpiring like that on a regular basis, they will win plenty of games.

Thanks for the summary everyone. It looks like we might do ok this year if we stay reasonably healthy and the young blokes keep making good progress.

Perhaps we should have played a proper side and won. Everyone else has been beating the Eagles of late, both leagues too. We need to make the ‘five’ or bust.

Agreed Ark and I guess we will soon see if it bites us on the arse vs the ds

WCER have been undefeated in the pre-season, even beat Claremont, so not losing sleep about this result as I think it was very encouraging regarding team depth. We played a reasonably strong team v SD with about 14 or 15 regular league players and won comfortably and they will be in the same mix as us for a spot in the 5.
