Probably should of mentioned this in the Cricket thread, but sad to hear Bacchus has had a heart attack today in Qld. Currently in hospital, touch wood the fella makes a full recovery…
Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery for Bacchus.
From reports it seems like he was very lucky, they are saying his heart actually stopped and it was lucky that the people he was with could keep him alive until help arrived.
Rod always seemed larger than life, especially after I bought and read his book many years ago. Gloves of Irony….great read.
Looking forward to another Rod….best of luck to you.
Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery, gotta be in the top 5 aussies of all time list, and I’m not just talking about cricketers.
I saw Rodney Marsh enjoying a quiet one with the hugs and kisses outside the E Shed markets in Fremantle a couple of months ago. What a combination Lillee and Marsh were hey?
Is that stand coming down in the redevelopment of the WACA? I think it’s older than the Prindiville stand and due next to come down. If the Marsh Lillee stand ever comes down then a new one should be named in their honour in its place.
Rod has been placed into an induced coma according to the latest report. Usually that is a bad sign.
Rest gently Bacchus you were a true Aussie in every sense - I’ll never forget the pugnacious batting and great keeping
condolences to his family as well
Rest In Peace Rodney. Thanks for all you did for cricket.
Great life in Cricket as a player, coach and administrator. From a generation that told it like it was, straight shooter.
RIP Rodney
I saw him bat in a grade final in the early 70’s at the WACA when two games would be on separate wickets simultaneously. He was hitting the ball that hard that for their safety the fielders of the other match kept one and a half eyes on him and only half and eye on their own game.
A product of the John Inverarity school of life that taught that good endeavour did not just stop on the playing field.
Got a few of his books, might be time to re-read them.
Rest in peace, Bacchus.
You were (and will forever be) an absolute legend.
Rod had just been selected in the Test team when I began seriously following cricket.
Great reminiscence about two games being played on adjoining wickets at the WACA, Devonleigh.
I can understand how 22 fielders would’ve felt in danger when Rod was batting.
Definitely a sad day for WA and Australia cricket.
c Marsh b Lillee will forever be etched in my cricketing memories growing up in the 70s…and many a WA and Australia scorecard.
A very sad day as we have lost not only a WA/Australian cricket legend but a WA icon.
Growing up in the late 70s/early 80s Bacchus was a god like figure along with his great mate D.K Lillee, Kim Hughes etc for kids in my era in the summertime everyone wanted to be him when wicketkeeping and batting left handed taking on the attack or D.K when bowling etc, along with our WAFL greats in the winter.
The Lillee-Marsh Stand at the WACA is a great tribute to our 2 WA legends, I will make sure I raise a glass to the great man next time I can have a beer in the Lillee-Marsh Stand probably when we play EF there in the footy season.
R.I.P Rodney William Marsh
R.I.P Rodney Marsh
c Marsh b Lillee will live forever. Glad I saw you enjoying a frothy outside the E Shed Markets a couple of months ago. Glad too I saw you play many memorable games at the WACA. Thank you Rod, you gave so much to cricket.
A great cricketer and administrator and also a great character in an era when great characters were adored an embraced by the public and the media alike, unlike today when they all have to be robots.
R.I.P iron gloves
one of Bacchus’ lesser known feats was as a South Fremantle player very early on before cricket became number 1 priority
Wasnt that Geoff Marsh who played for South in the mid 1970’s’?
