Postpone for 6 weeks and lets play 18 teams against the other 17 for a 17 week season

Hopefully the subject explains

Do people actually believe that this disease will be beaten in 6 weeks? We can’t be so gullible.

Probably not beaten, but hopefully controlled.

China seems to have got there.

That is one way of going about it. Would be interesting to see how fair and balanced a season is when you play each other once. As we know some players have been calling for it for a while.

Isn’t this virus meant to be at its worse around winter though. So June, July, August?

It doesn’t really matter whether you postpone the season, play it in empty stadiums or whatever, because as soon as one player contracts the virus, that whole club will be quarantined for two weeks and then that is when from an AFL perspective the shit will hit the fan.

So true Mr. And as for the thought bubble about 15 top up players in case a squad is affected who are the 15 blokes going to play for exactly?

Dont the afl clubs all have reserves teams already?
Why then the need to have a “mini draft” to top up each club with 15 players from the state leagues, just use those in their current reserves squad?
Mind you if any player contracts coronavirus the whole comp will be suspended indefinitely so what actual good is even proposing this preposterous “mini draft”…me thinks the Vics are clutching at straws again and only thinking about themselves yet again!

BH, gotta wonder dontcha, like you say, players are already their in their ressies, they did the same with their mid season draft (player theft) when there were heaps of players available right within each clubs system, why do they feel the necessity to lure players from interstate???

Anyway, i think it’s all a mute point as it seems like these state and national team comps will be closed down.

They probably will use their “ressies” as the VFL has been suspended

You’ve got your wish … maybe … TFaF.

[quote]The AFL has cut the men’s competition to 17 rounds in response to the coronavirus pandemic, but it is yet to decide whether it will suspend the start of the season.

AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan announced the decision in Melbourne this evening, having consulted the 18 clubs and key league stakeholders.

Well I think it may work. May - probably not - but worth a try.

Postpone until 1st week of June - That’s 11 weeks (up from my initial thoughts of 6) - and nearly three months.

I am hoping our CoVid numbers in Australia peek in 5 weeks, hold for 2 week and then decline steadily from that point.

June games still a lock out - but say from July seating allowed at 3 seats apart and every second row left out.

This would see the home and away season finish Sunday 27th September.

4 weeks of Finals would see the GF held on Saturday 24th October. If the MCG can’t accommodate that date the can get fucked.

None of this bullshit mini draft to Fark up the state leagues any more though.

DD’s suggestion of Members only allowed at WAFL games and keeping these games caped @ 3K with only 500 in the stands and 5 other areas of 500 max should work nicely too. Because these numbers are so small I would hope the State Leagues could start by mid May - still after CoVid peeks and starts to decline. This way they could get their season finished a couple of weeks before the AFL - cut the byes and the State game. Again maybe lock out for the first month - but televise all games so they can earn some income.

Junior Footy to continue from April as per normal with only one family member allowed to attend and they must watch from opposite wing to that of Coachs/Managers/Medics/Timers/Reserves/Umpire representatives and any other officials.

Love an optimist tfaf, but they’re saying a cure could be 18 months away. Stopping games for 1,2,3 months will hardly make much difference.

And Climate change is going to do us in 10 years 58. Australia will hit its peak in 5 weeks and it will then dissipate for mine/ Thoughts on the junior footy and State leagues?

NO!! Play a full season say the players.
And it’s not about money, there is a community duty to play the games.
And if you don’t agree we’ll go on strike as we threatened to do in the last round of pay negotiations.

Can anyone give me a reason why 17 games are ok, but 22 aren’t?

Pure speculation - but perhaps the AFL has come to an agreement with the TV rights holders. $418 million/year riding on it.

Much more chance of fitting 17 games into 40 weeks instead of 22 into 40. I know it’s only an extra 5 weeks but it gives them 5 weeks extra if we have to shut down for 14 days etc and games can’t be played.

Also 17 games means each team plays each other once, so in that way it’s fair. Lets see how many home games each team gets, I bet the Pies and Tiges wont travel interstate. Given the Eagles and Dorks travel every 2nd week the AFL need to subsidise charter flights so it’s only the crew, players officials etc that are on the plane.

Watched last night, what a woeful spectacle. Turned it off at half time.

The fans make footy that is for sure, no crowds no game.

They are actually damaging the brand by playing.

Better to delay until later in year.

It’s the commentators on TV who forgot to mention the last year’s premiers were playing a BOTTOM side & that’t why the huge score diff at 1/2 time. Piss weak free & 50m for Tigers early goal.
Never noticed the umps circling the pack before a ball up.
Why not give the 2 teams with the highest scores a play off the 2020 AFL premiership & forget this year.

Did anyone notice the part last night where Ed Curnow I think it was, had the ball in his left hand, fended off with his right hand, lost control of the ball whilst getting tackled and threw it up in the air and punched it with his left fist, ie a BLATANT THROW, and the umpire calls PLAY ON. Far out and the commentators didn’t even say anything.
