A hero of mine as a child. This is from Twitter via Lost WAFL:
“Vale Peter Burton
Very sad news on the passing of 1973 @subiacolions Premiership ruckman Peter Burton aged 76.
Peter played 182 @wafl games btwn 1967-1976 + WA on 3 occasions. He is a member of Subiaco’s Champion team 1946-76 & won the Fairest & Best in 68 & 75 #wafooty R.I.P.”
Sorry to hear of Peter’s passing. Lived on the same street as the Burtons - a street that also produced Dwayne “Fatty” Lamb, Phil Smart and Mark Lizzotte (aka Diesel) - and often, literally, looked up to him and his brilliant moustache. Could play a bit.
Very sad news about big Spider, was one of the tallest to play in that era, was a very good ruckman and a real character and being in that '73 team he is automatically a legend.
he also fathered some pretty decent footballers, a couple of which played VFL/AFL.
Didn’t all three sons play at Subi? Matthew, Jay & Travis.
I think Jay was very talented but suffered a career ending injury early. I think maybe he was selected in a WA state of origin team while playing WAFL, in the time of the expanded VFL.
