Night Games

Is it the night games why we are playing bad, or are we just really not that good?

I would have thought the players in the side are better than half the competition

Spoke with old mate on the phone and it sounds like Claremont went into this match as red hot favourites paying 1$ and 26c for the win. Apparently West Perth were sitting on 3 dollars 72c for the win.

Looking at the fixtures it looks like you have by far the most night games. Some twilight games coming up but you are the night owls of the WAFL in 2025. I wonder if your club stuck it’s hand up for more night games given you had new lights installed a couple of years ago?

Seems to be the trend, clubs pushing for new and better lighting. Be careful what you wish for. Heard Branden Parfitt interview on 91.3fm he said he doesn’t like night games makes it hard for him to sleep and prefers to play in the afternoon and have his Saturday night free. I imagine most players feel the same way.

How much $$$ are WAFL clubs receiving from 7 for their exclusive TV rights?

I note that the Subiaco v Swans game at Leederville is at 7.10 next Saturday night. As we move into winter these night games are not going to be well attended

Night games may work where there are café / restaurant strips close by but overall the clubs are tearing up 100 notes in the shower with the lack of supporters and the cost to run the lights. The clubs are trying to do things differently because the talk is that if the wafl doesn’t lift, the wafl will fold in ten years. More folk attend an amateur game than a wafl game, how can that be. Night games are not the answer.

Agree 100% Winger and we are the guinea pigs for the experiment.Don’t know if we asked for this but if we did it has been a major failure and will be reflected in the bottom line when the figures are collated. All for trying something new and to be fair the club has promoted the concept really well but the market is too small for the concept to be a success. As for the rest of the season we now go into “twilight time “ so far as fixture time is concerned so good luck with that.

Night footy is a must boys. Gets the younger people there. Maybe a 6:30pm start, 7:10pm maybe a little late for the elderly supporters.

Just having a look at your (WP) night game attendance, they are pretty good. All 3 games above 2,000.
v Pth 2,144, v SF 2,606 and v Cl 2,452. I don’t think you are getting anywhere near those figures if it was a 2:10pm game. There have been only 8 games so far with an attendance above 2K and 3 of them have been at Joondalup for a night game. I reckon it’s a pretty good indication that is working pretty well.

I’m hoping SF get a few night games going in the near future with better lights. Having the advantage of restaurants, pubs and cafes in walking distance gets more people through the gates. We had 3-4 night games a year around 10 years ago and they were great. Well attended and great atmosphere. Hopefully there are more of them IMO.

Welcome back Dogman and although you make some good points I’m still not entirely convinced. I mentioned the club has promoted the night games well including weekly Facebook reminders, team selection, game day arrangements, both men’s and women’s profiles before games and a few other things. That might have helped with those attendances and kudos to the club for that.Again happy to try anything but as I’ve stated before the market is too small to probably make a significant difference.Hope I’m wrong. I’d be interested in what other clubs have done this season and in the past to promote the night games.
