Momentous events in SA tonight. The SANFL tribunal has been meeting for 5 hours now to try and resolve the issue relating to North Adelaide having 19 men on the ground for a part of the last quarter of the preliminary final against Woodville West Torrens on the weekend. North had the extra man ( Aiden Tropiano) on the ground while 8 points were scored and they ended up winning by only 5. Apparently there is a real chance that those 8 points may be taken off North Adelaide which would mean the match result would be reversed and WWT would be in the Grand Final. The only thing was that the Woodville West Torrens team did not call for a head count at the time and North are claiming it was an error. Will be interesting to see the outcome.
mikeh: thanks for the post: ‘head counts’ are suppose to take place during the play, as you know. On the other hand, they report players after the game every week for years . Ideally, North should have their score wipped
North Adelaide fined $10,000 and docked four premiership points for next season. Will play in the SANFL Grand Final this Sunday. Hmmmm…
Whatever my personal view, which I mentionned above, it would have been an abuse of power to take the grand final off them. They need to re-write the rules in terms of what happens if this is discoverred after the siren. I would make it two games; i think they should stick with the wipping the score rule for offences committed during games
North have been bloody lucky
A replay might have been an option but that would have been unfair on Norwood I guess.
Disgraceful and weak decision. Surely Woodville-West Torrens will appeal and possibly take it to court. If my club lost by 5 points and the opposition had 19 men on the ground I would be filthy and demanding the opposition be stripped of their score up to that point and the result reversed. What a farce.
Taking legal action won’t help their case in having the decision overturn because the rule states the captain must ask the umpire for a head count. Is it fair or just I would think not but this case may now cause a change in how the rule is written and acted upon.
everyone knows the headcount rules, must be called by the captain, woodville west torrens only have themselves to blame for not calling it.
send runner out to captain, call a head count. rules are rules.
WPFootball Commission playing in a GF a much bigger scandal.
Apparently the extra player had been on the ground for some 5 to 10 minutes. I think North Adelaide have been lucky in the decision handed down.
Anyone see the channel 7 summary of the game. Absolutely fantastic compared to 7Perth. I think the 8 points should have being wiped.
Has been reported that Woodville West Torrens has lodged and demanding compensation for being denied a grand Final berth. The SANFL tribunal has indicated a preference of replaying the Preliminary Final, however it doesn’t have the power to enforce such a ruling.
The compensation claim was lodged with the SANFL yesterday and the club is awaiting a response before taking it any further.
The club is seeking compensation for loss of income through grand final prize money, income streams from a grand final appearance and the possibility of winning, plus legal fees.
Souths should do the same here.
