It is a complicated affair with the Mid-Season Draft because it’s exciting for the players to get an opportunity at AFL level they might have waited their whole life for, but it can also deny their WAFL club one of their more important players in the second half of the season.

WA State Talent Manager Adam Jones , you know the fuck you get when you ignore football people and hire clayton’s who graduated from a book , can see both sides and is part of the discussions to make sure WAFL clubs aren’t too impacted if they are to lose a key player.

“From a player’s perspective it is great to have another opportunity mid-year to be able get onto an AFL list but it certainly does make it challenging for WAFL clubs and their list management to be losing key players in the middle of a season,” Jones said.

“The WAFC are currently in dialogue with the AFL about increasing the compensation for WAFL clubs who lose a player in the mid-season draft.”

no shit sherlock

where the fark do these clark kents ooze out of ?

only the WAFC can produce these farks

The double whammy for a WAFL team of course if the Eagles or Dockers select one of their players is that they will then have to front up against their former player in a different guernsey. I reckon if East Fremantle lose Murdoch to Fremantle say, he should not be allowed to play for Peel against East Fremantle in a league game or a final in 2024.

mate everyone outside of Victoria knows that the VFL has the ability to “pool” readymade delisted players - after all most of them get swooped on to play in their own separate reserves comp there

this raid on other state players is nothing more than a free hit with little regard for their clubs if any

love to see the reaction if interstate clubs raided their reserves comp mid-season - the bastards would keel over and die the whinging and moaning would never cease

Here we go again- the mid season rape of the state leagues by the all powerful AFL.But at least we can look forward to the compensation received totalling……nothing.Money won’t change the preseason planning, commitment by clubs and coaches and time spent in developing players to get to this point and all that I don’t have a problem with when a player is picked up at the end of a season but now? It’s a total smack in the face.Players like Murdock and Teakle are mature and ready to go (and should have been picked up before- yes I know Teakle was) but a young guy like Scaife(who is not ready to walk into a starting lineup in an AFL side) would greatly benefit from staying where he is and building on what is currently an up and down series of performances. This is a problem with the media - someone performs for a few quarters and they are suddenly superstars.Don’t get me wrong I think Scaife will end up being very good but FMD does the AFL have any idea about development or is it just grab first and hope a player develops later. And if he doesn’t just spit him back out.

widespread word is that live bag of victorian pigshit North Melbourne have told Scaife he’s going to them

more news confirmed
and it’s good for us
Cockburn & Queensland Coast aren’t taking anyone

It looks like Subi’s Savigni and Kentfield might be going to Brisbane and Melbourne respectively in the MSD. Good for them, bad for Subi with Giro, Hayden, Lockyer all gone for the season and Dewar and Sokol out for extended periods.

BC the only 3 MSD certs from WA seem to be Blight, Scaife and Teakle…a lottery for the other WA MSD wannabes.

As you say BC, good luck to those selected, harsh for their respective clubs, but no surprise the fans being selfishly happy when their best players don’t get selected…puts a different spin on the term “loyal” I guess.

There are 346 nominations for a maximum of 23 spots. Fairly low odds of being picked up I would have thought

Freezn I think you’re a bit harsh with the “loyal” bit.
The kids are still looking to fulfil their dream.
What shits me is that they take them when they have players on a long-term injury list.
Thery don’t play them then spit them out.
But as mikeh says low chance of going.
Not sure that too many from WA will get taken.

DF, I ain’t talking about the players being "loyal’…more so the “loyal” fans, declaring their happiness, when an opportunity for one of their teams players getting drafted falls through.

The MSD is a crime though, more so because the AFL recruiting teams have enough opportunities to draft prospective wannabes looking to fulfill their dream. They have the Main draft, Pre Season draft Rookie Draft, and the SSP draft…geez how many drafts does one need to fill ones list?

Hopefully the MSD will be canned and the clubs can negotiate a loan system amongst themselves mid season fior players…eg Lobb, not getting a game at WBD, gets loaned to Richmond for 3 months and Richmond pays his salary during that time, thus leaving the WAFL etc alone during their seasons.

Freeze just in case my comments weren’t clear I am happy for any of my clubs players to be drafted but like yourself question the timing and necessity of the MSD when there are so many others. And as stated it totally disrupts planning and the ability to recruit like for like players at this late stage. These young guys deserve a go at the highest level - just bemoaning the total disregard for state league clubs.

No probs mate…your post wasn’t the one I was having a subtle or not so subtle dig at

Agree it kills the comp and the club for sure…too many drafts if you ask me, especially for the salaries these AFL club recruiting folk are getting paid. Just increase the list size by 1 each then…atleast clubs will lose player/s in the off season and have some time to recruit accordingly…not mid season when it’s nigh impossible to recruit a decent replacement.

Kentfield gone, just what we need seeing as we are overflowing with big men. Fkn joke

Blight, Scaife, Kentfield, Teakle and Craven are the 5 WA MSD selections…Peel won’t be weakened with losing Blught due to their Freo contingent…WP and Subi lose their talented young talls…Teakle to North(ouch)…and a smokey in Craven goes to Brisbane…frustrating for EP as the young fella is a serious talent, with a great left foot.

Obviously congrats to those individuals and commiserations to their WAFL clubs. for losing such talent mid season.

Yes that’s correct. And the question needs asking why is it allowed?

Unfortunately, its allowed because everyone is a feeder comp to the AFL

Armature clubs will feel the flow on effect because no doubt wafl scouts have been out at amature games recently looking to fill their holes and the cycle goes on

The stupid thing is that most of them are just moving from the WAFL to the VFL for the rest of the season. Of the 5, Teakle will probably slot into the Kangaroos AFL side pretty quickly. Otherwise maybe Blight could play some games given Richmond’s injury list

first of all it is a bit of a disaster for us
on top of so many players leaving the WAFL for the VFL pre-season
it is a true reflection of how poorly the VFL run a supposed national competition
there were a lot of delistings last year - are they all useless or deemed not to be considered ?
there isn’t any semblance of a mechanism that has player replacement available other than a poorly run raid
geez the pool must be dwindling rapidly

The thing is with the MSD is that it was originally conceived as a way of replacing long term injured players mid season, but it has just transitioned without any controls to a mid season rape of 2nd tier comps. Plus all AFL clubs have either a reserves or an affiliated reserves team to cover long term injured players otherwise why have the reserves??

Yes another opportunity for 2nd tier players to get a chance but lets face it, it’s rare (yes there have been a couple) that a MSD player makes it as a regular long term AFL player, generally they stay in a 2nd tier comp ie VFL, SANFL or WAFL in the AFL reserves or aligned clubs.
