Landmark Country Championships 2016

Different format this year with one game played over this weekend before carnival in Perth in July.

Last night Ongerup beat up Great Southern at Mt Barker by 10 goals after Great Southern led by a goal at quarter time. It was Ongerup by 13 points at half time and then they powered away, and were too big & strong.

General consensus of peopel I have spoke to over 3 Leagues is they do not like the new format and two of the Leagues were very undermanned as players did not head to the city for 2 days of footy and much prefer the old format.

And not including the percentage from the initial games in the Country how ridiculous is that WACFL

I don’t like the format. It incorporates too many byes into the season and in our comp you have teams not playing for 3 weeks,2 games in 5 weeks. It’s just hard to keep blokes interested. I don’t think there should be a weekend for colts carnival and then one for country week. Make them both the same week!

What I’d like to see is the AFL have a mid season bye,no football,on 1 weekend and it can coincide with the WAFL/VFL/SANFL state game but also add in country weeks around the country and promotion of grass roots football.

MD your suggestion is sound save for your premise that the AFL is interested in the state leagues. To put it eloquently they couldn’t give a stuff about the WAFL competition and the other state competitions.

I think the WACFL should be given some credit for trying some new things.
I agree it wasn’t perfect, but giving the opportunity for local supporters to see an interleague clash close to home (Mt Barker, Narrogin, Bunbury, Geraldton etc) was, I think, a great initiative.
Speaking to some of the Avon and GNFL players they commented on how the game they played in Geraldton was very well attended, with a finals like atmosphere.

The function at East Fremantle on the Saturday night was another great idea. The chance to socialise with blokes you only see once or twice a year was great.
It’s a pity it wasn’t supported by all leagues.

Having the carnival over two separate weekends did make it hard to keep the same team together. Although on the plus side it also gave some players who missed the first fixture another opportunity to represent their respective leagues. It also minimised costs for the competing leagues by only having to stay one or two nights instead of two, three and even four nights at a hotel.

There are definitely a few kinks to iron out, but credit to the WACFL for trying something different.

Not knocking trying something, but for every positive I hear negatives too. Not sure if confirmed but game at Narrogin was poorly attended and battled to cover costs.

Yeah I understand where you are coming from mate.

Hopefully all concerns regarding the format are heard and the WACFL move forward in a way in which the majority of the leagues will be happy.
