John O’Connell

It was announced at Claremont Football Club yesterday by Ashley Prescott at Club Presentations, that Western Australian,Claremont Football Club and Football Media Legend John O’Connell had Passed Away.

I think it appropriate from here, that those closest to the man referred to as Okey, lead the Tributes 1st.

So Tiger Tails and company, you can lead the way, folks,….

Sad to hear, RIP JO.

His son played for Perth. Pete. RIP John

John was my Manager for many years either directly or indirectly. He was an outstanding person who always listened, talked and understood what was required. I will always remember his way of giving you a warning when getting close to the line, a not-so-subtle grab of the shoulder left you in doubt about what was required! His contribution to the Claremont football club can never be underestimated, Marshall and Moss et al might get the notoriety but John was always there giving his all in the administrative area.
Will miss him for more reasons than I care to think of! rest in peace my dear friend.

An absolute giant on and off the field for Claremont, the WAFL and WA football as a whole in his roles as a player, coach, administrator and commentator.

Had a significant contribution in his time at Geelong after transfer to Victoria with work commitments.

Whilst his record speaks for itself, it was Okeys ability to build relationships as a player, coach or administrator that was remarkable. He always had time for a chat, was genuinely interested in the person and had a knack of saying the right thing at the right time.

Condolences to the O’Connell family.

RIP Okey

The three boys who played WAFL with David and Michael playing AFL were very good athletes. I image all 3 of them would have been school sports and little athletics champions. All great runners.

Can speak of watching Peter O’Connell playing many seasons for the Demons in the number 44 jumper playing on a wing. Daughter Pippa used to do Postcards WA. Haven’t seen her on the telly for years.

Obviously a wonderful father and grandfather and stalwart in football. Condolences to the Claremont FC on losing a great.
