Sam Whiteman , former West Aussie skipper has returned to his country of birth, England.
He was an out standing cricketer and once touted as a gloveman for Australia until he injured , I think a finger. Some thing he never recovered from.
With the debacle of the Ashes, could we see Sam become one of themin the Ashes in England in 2027?
Also going to England is Darryn Lehmanns son, Jake.He was a pretty solid player for South Australia not that long ago.Could he also be a smokey to play for England?
Are the Poms getting that desperate?
Not because of Sam and Jake, but are they really that short on players?
Maybe they are looking for players that actually care. Because obviously there were plenty came out here for a holiday.Maybe they would have been better withthe Barmy Army.

I wonder if the move is based on him being told its time to regenerate the SS team - time will tell but it could be interested to see what happens next time they name a shield team
According
to what I read he will not be able to play unless he applies for permission.
Isn’t county played in the Shield off season?..no different to Parfitt playing in the NT during the WAFL off season…doesn’t mean he is leaving Perth.
Obviously Whiteman’s WA career is closer to the end, then the beginning…thus signing for 3 years for Yorkshire is a good money earner for Sam…and allows Yorkshire to still have an OS spot free to fill. Smart move by both Sam and Yorkshire…but I hope WA move on from Whiteman for the next SS season…has done his job of 3 Shield wins…time to look elsewhere
Anchor arent state sides allowed to have OS players? They used to…I just thought the states just weren’t interested unless they were top notch…and with so many formats these days and binding contracts…the good players are told when and where they can play.
Yes the States were allowed top players from over seas. Remember WA had Rohan Kahni the wonderful WI batsman. And the big hitter from England Colin ? This was at the time when WA needed assistance.
South Australia had Barry Richards.
But I think Australian cricket banned the States using them.
Ken McEwan from South Africa suited up for WA…also didn’t Wayne Daniel play for WA? Botham and Richards for Qld…no doubt many more…
I am sure Garner played for SA in the 80’s and if i remember right Imran Khan played for NSW at one stage there in the 80’s too
Colin Milburn. Big lump of a bloke, hardly ran. Crunched boundaries. Think he scored a triple century.
Played test cricket for Englang. Lost an eye in a traffic accident. But still played on.
OS players still allowed to play, but CA prefer states to use Aust players.
Reckon 243 at the Gabba against Queensland in 68/69 might have been his crowning Glory,Anchor.
He went from 63 at Lunch to 243 at Tea.
According to Rod Marsh in You’ll Keep,he spent 20 minutes trying to fan off Ollie.
It was no use.He was spent and got out soon after Tea.
Former champions Michael Holding & Richard Hadlee both played for Tasmania in the 1980s.
Ex County pros Jack Simmons & Brian Davison (Zimbabwean) had long stints for Tassie when they first competed in the SS both might have Captained them to.
The following Internationals played in the SS & McDonalds Cup in the 1980s-
Joel Garner WI - SA
Vic Marks ENG - WA
Imran Khan PAK - NSW
Ian Botham ENG - QLD
Graeme Hick ZIM/ENG - QLD
Patrick Patterson WI - TAS
Tony Lock was surely one of the first…was he retired from tests by that stage?
You’d have thought so,unless he answered an SOS like Cowdrey.
From memory Jeff Crowe ex NZ skipper (and the older brother of the more talented Martin) played a few years for SA, but that was before he even played a game for the Black Caps!
Lock played 62/3 until 70/1.
Skipperd the WAteam to win the SS 67/68.
Sir Garfield Sobers played for South Australia in the 60’s
Add Barry Richards, who broke up in Tears of Laughter, when Rowdy Mallet made his No Slog Declaration, next time he was in the 90’s!
