Game V North Melbourne

I had a look at most of this today. The conditions were quite unique for an AFL game in that the wind was blowing a gale up one end of the ground and it made the kicking very flukey. There were a few kicks into the breeze that nearly blew back to the kicker!!
Despite this and the fact it was freezing cold obviously, I enjoyed the game. It was a very competitive affair and I thought the Eagles were in control for most of the day. North lifted in the last quarter and were just a little more desperate when it counted.

West Coast wouldn’t have lost any friends with their performance though as they played pretty well in conditions that would have been totally foreign to them. I thought most of the Eagles midfielders played well. They have found a beauty there in Duggan and he slotted a great goal against the breeze. Wellingham has found a new lease of life under Simpson and they were generally well set up in their clearances.

If there was a turning point in the last quarter, it was that lace up pass that Kennedy inexplicably dropped which if he had taken and converted would have brought the Eagles level. Instead North seemed to gain momentum after this.

All in all I enjoyed watching this game as a neutral, what did Eagles fans think?

Those conditions were foreign to the Roos as well as they play most of their games under the roof at Etihad.
I missed mot of the second half so can’t comment on that, but, how bad was the NON decision that Razor Ray made against Hurn for dropping the ball. Tackled fairly and squarely by Waite, dropped the ball and Razor called play on. Bizarre.
Razor had a shocker up to half time not sure how he went after that.

The umpiring for the game was shocking but its time to move on. West Coast should have won that game.

Not sure why you would leave a loose man in defence when every time it went into the forward 50 for West Coast in the last quarter, North’s loose player took a mark and out it came with interest. Maybe Simmo was trying to teach the boys not to bomb it long inside 50 all the time. Should have manned him up and made him accountable.

Yup and i the same passage then payed a free to Sheppard, just to rub it in

Yep that was bad and just as bad as the 50m penalty against Priddis when Harvey was the guy that knocked the ball out of Prddis’s hands after a free,it sent Harvey closer to goal.
Pure guess work by the ump!

Yea there were a lot of sketchy umpiring decisions both ways.

Considering the conditions I thought it wasnt a bad game. North adapted to the conditions a bit better and came out victors.

Simpson would not be happy with WCE last qtr. Constantly blazing away which just wasnt working. One that stood out to me was Sheed had the footy on the half back, running into the middle of the ground and took a bounce, looked up with plenty of time and then just thumped it into the forward 50 to 2 Roos players with no WCE players around.
He should have held and steadied.

Scooter with 10 disposals should see a week in the WAFL for Barrass.
Not even close to good enough for a full game.
Clearances were woeful in the last term.
NicNat kicking 0g4p is never good although trying conditions.
But to lose the last quarter 3g to NM’s 4 when playing with a 4 goal breeze is pitifull.

You guys would have been laughing your heads off if the thing happened the other way around.
Not a good look I have to admit, but nothing about Harvey is a good look.

Wasn’t Razor’s fault. We had more frees ( 21 to 14 ). It soured last 5 minutes of 3rd quarter. Kennedy’s miscalulation was crucial. Followed by stupid bombs. BUT there’s always tomorrow.

We ? I thought you were a Bummer supporter snapper head.

They slip up from time to time Peter.
I didn’t say that Razor cost YOU the game LS.
But I am sure that your mob would be saying what a clever piece of football knowledge it was if one of your guys was smart enough to do it.

Funny how Harveys action didnt cost a goal, YET Kennedys unpunished blatant push in the back in the last quarter, actually DID cost a goal. Funny that the media here never ever mentioned that.

Anchorman I hate cheating. What Lindsay Thomas has done and what Brent Harvey
did, which is pleading to the ump for a free they are faking for, is cheating!
I can’t stand it, I’ll never be able to! I take slight at your lousy implication.
Harvey should have been fined. If getting caught cheating and allowed to get away
with it isn’t bringing the into disrepute then…
I understand you are okay with it with lousy twats like Ballantyne and Josh Carr
on your team.

Shwaborn what penalty, if any, should the umpire in question get because it is patently clear that he DID NOT see what happened and he GUESSED?

Similarly, what penalty, financial or otherwise, should the umpire receive for his contact with the player?

Umpires miss stuff, no question.
I thought the rule staging came into effect to penalise cheating, so to
penalise Harvey.
I wasn’t implying anything for the ump.
I imagine the umpire’s game will come into review,as per usual, and the best umps
get the finals game at the end of the season.

The salient points are that in the first instance the umpire did not see what had transpired when he awarded the 50 m penalty. He guessed and umpires are not supposed to guess.

Secondly, with respect to the umpire contacting the player, what would the sanction be if the roles were reversed? I have a very big problem with this as it clearly and demonstrably shows that the umpires have very little regard for the welfare of the players. If they had such regard for the players, why do they refuse to blow the whistle when it is clear that a player could be seriously injured, yet allow play to continue in close proximity to the injured player? Compare that attitude with what they do if an umpire is injured; they almost break the speed of light in blowing the whistle to stop play.

in regard to the umpires, you win some you lose some. Its that simple. They even interviewed Matt Priddis about what Harvey did, and Priddis basically giggled and said “he’s a cheeky bugger, Oh well good luck to him”. Well done Matthew.

As for the umps, they should never guess and clearly the umpire did on that occasion. Not good but that’s life. He may get demoted for it.
