With Subiaco dominating for most of the past 12 years what other clubs have dominated in the past.
The now defunct East Perth was probably the most dominant of all time winning 5 in a row 1919-1923
South Freo won 6 1947-1954.
Swans winning 3 in a row in the 60s and 80s
Can anyone else think of any other golden eras
Outer: the big three --EF, WP, EP, – won 54 premierships up to 1980; in most cases, even when someone else won the flag, they played one of the big three in the grand final. In addition, it was not until 1970, that none of the big three made the finals. We owe a great debt to the PFC sides of the 60s and 70s, and the SD side of the early 1960s.
Perth’s dominant era,with a light sprinkling of diwn years spanned from 1947 - 78.
PERTH finished 3rd in '47 and made many Finals appearances from then on,though we did miss out in ‘52’,'60 - 62,'65,'71,'73 and '75.
What made mist of those years easier to bear, was a Premiership in another Grafe,or at least a Grand Final appearance, which meant the season went to the last day,at least for the fanatics.
e.g.1960 Colts Flag
1961 Colts Flag
1962 Colts Grand Finallists
1965 Colts Flag(Undefeated?)
1971 Reserves Flag
1973 Reserves Flag
1975 Reserves Flag(on protest).
Perth 1978 to 2016
Grassy: I would go so far as to say that the 1947-55 era was the one period where the big three did not dominate because of the powerful South side and the very good PFC side which could not quite match it with South and WP, at least for premierships.
That’s for another Topic.
Dave Warner already covered the 1st half of it in his book,Football’s Hall of Shame. :silly:
We often knocked South Freo and West PERTH off in those days,Ark.
Unfortunately couldn’t quite go the distance until BIG MAC put in his Final Collossal,Herculean effort to edge us over the line.
Can’t really say WP ever dominated an era, they may have won 19 premierships but have never gone 3 in a row and only went back to back in 1934-1935 and 1941-1942 with 1942 being the under age comp during the war.
Interesting topic Tosg.Had a look at Subis last 30 years and they have been the standout side in thoes 3 decades..Must of enjoyed the Premiership win over West Perth last year. The Falcons have knocked you off in plenty of finals in the 90’s and 2000’s.
I know it’s not WAFL but have to mention Port Adelaide’s run of 6 1954-1959 and actually winning 9 in 11 years
Yep WP ended our season many times up to and including 2003, that’s why last years was the one we really wanted.
How many Grand finals did WP make in the period 1947-1954? It is true that they lost out to South, but that side is viewed by many as the best seen in Perth. You need to give WP some credit. Had it not been for SF, they could have easily had 20 premierships by 1980. The same applies to EP whom suffered the most at the hands of Perth in grand finals.

Hard to comment on era’s you didn’t witness but I was privileged to grow up witnessing a golden era for Perth in the 70’s and had to knock off some mighty opposition in the process. Claremont, SD and SF were the dominant 3 sides in the competition from about 79 to 84,then I think Subiaco ended their drought in 85 or was it 86? Then Claremont had a golden run under Neesham before the Dockers plucked him from the WAFL. Since then Subiaco have dominated* since Peter German kicked them off.
*exploited dominance through a sweet deal with Subiaco Oval. Sorry Subi followers but it’s fact.
We must also keep in mind the great efforts of Claremont since 1980; have they played in half the grand finals?
Claremont’s full record, note the ascendancy since 1980:

Well done indeed. As I have said before on here, in 1987 Claremont were the perfect football side: they imported players to defeat Subiaco and East Fremantle and also had the benefit of winning the colts and reserves premierships in 1986, which, promised well for the club’s future.

Sorry mate but this topic is to celebrate great teams and not to have a sook
That right Claremont have been outstanding since 1978 AR.Subi ahead after winning the last two.2014 losing the 2nd semi qiuiet badly then beating that very strong alignment East Perth side in the GF.That was a very good win.All the Swans supporters where screaming for Subi that day.
: :cheer:
,even BH and Swandog also..lol
gtrxuone: Yep, I remember all the SD boys putting their congratulations on the Subi thread after that grand final; it was most appreciated indeed. Some of the EP supporters did so as well, which was very good of them. Actually, I saw very little of that grand final, as I was too nervous to watch the game. Can you believe it?
St George: 1956-1966 (11 consecutive premierships)
I have periodical tables for each decade and other periods on my site.. shows win loss records not premierships/finals etc
You can access theses tables from my home page, click Ladders and select ‘Periodical Ladders’ or by clicking this link.

I can add more tables for any other period so if you anyone would like a specific period I am happy to add to that page.
