I was having a bit of fun with Bazza over on the statue thread when it got me thinking about the biggest grub to play WAFL over the last say 40 years. For mine it would be a toss up between John Wynne, Frank Bucknell, Basil Campbell and an honorary mention to Chris Billings after having his licence to play withdrawn. I’d be interested in the thoughts of others.
Not in the same breath as legendaries such as Jack Sheedy , Wilson Onions , Mal Atwell and co but seeing as 1977 was his last season Mal Brown had a brutal streak , Ronnie Boucher had one too even Graham Moss didn’t mind mixing it - worst of the latter day was Devan Perry
agree Southerner although I didn’t see the likes of Sheedy and co that you’ve mentioned play but they did have fearsome reputations…along with Trizzie Lawrence and Mike Regan.
Two others skipped my memory - Dale Reeves & Mark Jackson
Dale Reeves was probably more dumb than dirty..how could anyone confuse Wayne Cormack for Brian Peake…perhaps it wasn’t stupidity on Reeves behalf…maybe fear played funny beggars with Dale’s eyesight… Bomber was at least 20kgs heavier than Cormack…
Bushell was a dirty player…but then again neither of the Taylor boys are overly scary… which one was it that Bushell shoved into the fence again?
Used to love watching Robbie and Tony Solin go about their footy…esp when playing for EF!
Bushell pushed a Subi trainer over the fence. The poor bloke had a crook leg and couldn’t get out of the way quick enough and Bushell pushed him fair in the middle of the back and over the fence. The germ got a couple of weeks for it too and then Laurie Keene ironed him out in the first few minutes of the '86 GF…karma I call it.
BC…whilst I agree Bushell deserved karma and was a grub… Keene was 200cm / 100 plus kg and Bushell was 180 cm and 70 odd kg… …yep big Laurie was the enforcer of all enforcers…LOL
The interestting thing about the Keene/ Bushell thuggery was that Laurence Keene got away with it without being suspended, as I re-call.
Rod Willet always liked to go the biff
Kevin Taylor
David Meirs
Peter Owens
Gary Sidebottom
Benny V
Ron B
Stephan Michael
Basil Campbell
Peter Worsfold
Andrew Waller

A shirt front by a player called Ian Dargie.
I have been told in Wafl football legend.1968 second semi final East Perth player Mark Odogahue kick 6 goals from the wing.Start on the 68 GF Mal Atwell cleaned up MO with a ripper shirt front.Broke his collar bone…David Miers was a brutal player…Steven Michaels hit like a pack of bricks but legal within the rules.
I remember the games between East Perth & West Perth!
The Cardies supporters used to hate mostly.
(1) Mal Brown
(2) Mal Atwell
East Perth supporters felt likewise about Ray Lucev and John Wynne.
Big difference between dirty and tough, but in regards to tough my Father in law, an east freo man, has often spoken about how tough Mal Atwell was.

Phil Read another dirty prick
Big difference between dirty and tough, Atwell, Brown, Michael even Boucher all hard men who all would stand toe to to toe if required, all dished out hard bumps and tackles although TI’s coat hanger at Lotons on an EP player was a bit mmmm unfortunate. Not sure that Devon Perry ever hit anyone from behind so bit unfair to call him anything other than hard
Dirty players _ Meirs for his hit from behind on Russell Sparks is the most cowardly thing I ever saw, Trizzie Lawrence for ankle taps, Heatleys hit in Barnard in a pack when no one was looking.
Ron Boucher without a doubt the dirtiest player I’ve ever seen but I was happy he was on our side when we played the Vic’s pushing Don Scott and others around.
Stephen Michael dirty!!! Gimmee a break.Hard tough not dirty.
Boucher was a bully picked on the little blokes.Never took TI on, or any of the other tough guys.
That sums it up mate - it’s why I used to the term Brutal streak , Devan Perry wasn’t shy on swinging arms at the bottom of congested packs , ask a few of the Claremont lads who came up against him ![]()
Bushell, Dale Reeves, Roberts from SD, Ray Lucev, Boucher, Bucknell, the Solins, Atwell, Kevin Sparks, Rod Willet, Gerry Neesham, Bazz Campbell, …
How about some brotherly love.
David and Michael Swan.
