Dela announces his retirement

Lachlan Delahunty has announced that the game on August 27 against Perth at Leederville will be his last. Thanks Lachie for a magnificent career at Subi. You will go down as one of our all time greats!

Yes, I just saw that on the club’s website Jjim. What can you say about a guy who’s played in 7 GF’s, won 5, a Sandover Medal, state representative and is clearly one of our greatest players of all time. I also think that if he’d not played so much in the ruck at 194 cms where he was up against much bigger guys, his career could have gone on another year or two.

Anyway, no-one knows his body better than he does so congrats on a stellar career Lachlan, you’ve been terrific and we the WAFL family and Subi supporters in particular have enjoyed watching you go around.

Champion is a term over used these days but I think Dela fits that description with ease. BC, summed it up and if the club had gone after a dedicated ruckman, or the commission had not instigated the crazy “Zac Clarke” rule, he would have had a longer career.

I wish him well in his footy retirement and thank him for what he has done for Subi and the WAFL.

Thank you Dela, an absolute legend and one of my top 5 favourite Subi champions of all time

The club is selling Dela appreciation T-shirts on its website which gets you into the post game celebrations and official Dela after party. All profits go to the player facilities renovations so get in quick as I reckon they’ll go off like a keg at a wharfies picnic.

A big night at The Sandbar coming up for Dela and friends. Lol

Been a very good player.

A languid mover, surprisingly strong in the ruck. Has been an excellent linkman. His height and running gave subi a way out of defence. That left foot, although unreliable at times, would swing subi into attack very quickly. Handy at times at CHF, but for me best in the midfield.

A tough competitor as well. Made A fantastic contribution with his partner in crime, Kitch. Was a big reason for wafl supporters despairing of Subi’s success.

A shame he played on in the goal square in the first game of the season. I haven’t forgotten Della.

I’d be interested in the views of others on here where we think Dela sits in the club’s best players this century. When compared to say Rumba, Ali Pickett, Matt Priddis, Brad Smith, Horse and a few others I personally would put him slightly behind Horse, Ali and Pridda as those three were generational type players but ahead of the others mainly because of his versatility and ability to play in multiple positions plus a Sandover in the back pocket gives him a certain amount of cred.

Rumba and Skida were fantastic players but rarely ventured away from full back and full forward respectively whereas Dela played as an undersized ruck, tall on-baller, half forward, wing… so pretty much where he was needed. Just my thoughts and there are probably other players who are right up there as well that I haven’t mentioned.

Not this century but my top 5 in no particular order Bucky, Keene, Feathers, Horse and Dela and if I could have 6 then Ali, only because he came from the much hated chunder

BC another Sandover medallist and a proper utility type player was Richard Ambrose, but I would place Dela above the Wig, I think he was more skillful. The teams in that 2004 to 2008 era had some stellar players, Mark “Desi” Haynes was one of my alltime favs, 200+ gamer Chad Cossum was another one, Luke Newick was a dominant ruckman, wouldn’t we love him at full flight now, but pretty hard to go past the 3 you mentioned in Ali Pickett, Pridda and the Horse.

Hahaha. I had a chuckle when I read your chunder comment DG. Yes, getting Ali and Germo from them almost makes up for the travesty of 2016 and 2017.

I’d try and fit Dela in my top 5 of all time. Bucky, Feathers, Ali, Dela, Horse.
I’m probably leaning heavily to those in more recent memory. But the last three have been a joy to watch play.

Sorry, no way im putting Dela ahead of Keane or Phil Scottas a ruckman forward. But this century, its a tight call. Brad Smith really was influential. So was webby. Bristol and kitch also. Phelan, don’t forget him. Rumble, big game player. Gus and lockyer also crucial in the club’s success.

Tough call. Dela definitely in the same company.

He interviewed well on wafl world tonight too.

Yeah, Dela would be top 10.

Always difficult to compare era’s, especially pre and post WCE and Freo…Featherby was a champ back in his day, longevity wise, his ability to rack up possessions never faltered…where would he sit in your guys eyes?

Would loved to of seen a match between Subi’s 85/86 teams v one of your post 2000 or 2010 teams. Who would of won and why?

Freeze, would be a close call between the 86/88 team and the 2006-2008 team, but any team with Keene leading the ruck and going forward is probably going to get the nod.

As we know it’s very difficult to compare teams pre and post 1987 for obvious reasons but the 1986 side was a belter chock full of stars. For mine, the only team which might come close would be 2015 which demolished WP by 11 goals and had a rampant Sam Menegola, Horse, Dela, Kitch, Phelan, Boland kicked 7 and Yarran 5…it was a beauty.

And to think BC only Menagola was good enough to play AFL…though Horsley got injured during his GCS time…to me that 85/86 team was fantastic…Keene and Scott in tandem would of been hard to combat…so wonderful players on both sides for that time..

Tbh Freeze I think our 1991 side that was thrashed by tiges in the gf would beat all of our post 2000 sides

Point of order Freez…Yarran played 6 games for Freo but yes, take your point.
