Dean Jones

I just heard that unfortunately former Australian cricket star Dean Jones has passed away from a massive heart attack in Mumbai, India at the age of only 59.
Was a fantastic batsman in both Test & One Day cricket who revolutionised one day batting for Australia in the mid 80s with hard running between the wickets and many 100s off the same amount of balls and a great outfielder in the deep.

R.I.P Deano

Just heard the news myself also. Was a childhood hero of mine Deano, beautiful batsman to watch and was a tough Aussie.
He nearly died on the pitch in India in his epic 1986 innings so something quite eerie and ironic that his innings has ended there.
Absolute legend, RIP Deano and hope he’s having a beer with Hookesy somewhere.

Extremely sad news about Dean Jones’ premature passing.
As you say, Tiger of old, it’s ironic that Dean passed away in India.
His 210 in the stiffling Chennai conditions has gone down in cricket folklore, both because of his courage and the fact it was only the second-ever tied Test.
R.I.P., Deano.

Tragic news. Deano is remembered for many things - that knock in September 1986 in the second tied test will surely sit on top.

Sad day for Australian sport.

Such an exciting batsman to watch and I saw some great knocks by him live, the best was a one day century against NZ at the WACA on a stinking hot day. But as others have said, his monumental innings in the test in India will go down in history as one of the most courageous innings ever in cricket.
Thoughts are with his family, the whole cricket community and also Brett Lee who desperately tried to save him.

Really sad to hear about Dean’s passing. Spent most of his life involved in cricket.Played, commintated +coached T20 in Asia.
Always remember Dean being vunrable early in his innings, But if got through those first 30 balls ,watch out.
Will really miss Dean on Macquarie Radio this summer.Doing Big Bash with Bruce Eber.Wonderful cricket commenty from Dean..

just a sad news day - way too young for this
condolences to all involved

I remember him scoring 2 x 100s in 2 consecutive days Mike during the Americas Cup Challenge series here at the WACA in the summer of 1986/87 against ENG & PAKI from memory.
He was right at the top of his game at the time.
Aside from his extraordinary 210 in that Madras tied test in 86 the 216 he scored against the WI in the summer of 1988/89 at Adelaide Oval against the fearsome foursome of Ambrose, Marshall, Walsh & Patterson was a top innings and helped by a cameo 72 from his great mate Merv down the other end where they put on a big late order partnership.

A huge shock. I was on my way home from work and tuned into 6PR and heard the commentator ask a caller “and what is your memory of Dean Jones”? I’m scratching my head saying why would he ask that? Then opened my phone and The West app. I couldn’t believe it.

A massive loss to cricket. Dean Jones was a real character and an integral part of the revival of Australian cricket when we hit rock bottom. There was no better batsman in the Australian team IMO and no better batsman to watch than Dean Jones in that era.

I read that it was actually in the hotel lobby where he suffered the heart attack and Brett Lee was there and administered CPR until the ambulance arrived. I wonder if they have defibrillators over there? I’m guessing not in the hotel but you would assume in the ambulance.

Apparently he was exercising in the hallway of the hotel just a couple of hours prior. R.I. P Dean Jones. Thank you for the way you went about your cricket. Always entertaining and never boring.

Shocking news, didnt hold back always said it how it was.
Taken way to young RIP Deano.

Deano & Viv were my idols of cricket. Remember around 1987 doing a VHS to send to my son in Melbourne & saying that Deano had just made a ton when my wife rushed out & said Jones had just made a century. We all laughed & it’s on the VHS (now a CD). My son got me an autographed book “Dean Jones one-day magic” for Xmas in 1991. It’s personalized & signed Dean Jones + a funny face.. Lots of photos, stats & cartoons by Jeff Hook. Will reread it over the weekend.. Hated him dumped for Stevies twin prick.

Anyone remember 1988-89 V the West Indies.
5th Test Adelaide..D Jones 216…Ambrose-Marshall-Patterson+ Walsh.Harper+Sir Viv bowling spin.
When Clive Lloyd played against Dean mainly in ODI matches. They use to bowl top of the of stump to DJ.And wait for Dean to make an error.
That day they all bowled to short or overpitched trying to York DJ.He cut +pulled and straight drove the windie quicks.
Remember Dean being a really good at the pull shot. But only really trying to hook at the Waca.

Remember Australia being up against it and then Mervyn Hughes came out
he copped an absolute hiding and wore some serious body hits at high speed but faced up to the next ball almost laughing at them
He also clobbered his way to an unbelievable 72 and I reckon it was the start of the standing up to the sheer brilliant class of the West Indies
as the others all say it helped Jones to 216 which was monumental
