Damien Martyn

Gee terrible news former WA champion batsman Damien Martyn is in an induced coma in a Brisbane hospital with meningitis. Everything else I tried to read was paywalled but I’m going off an article in The West this morning.

The way they are talking about his career statistics it sounds like he might struggle to pull through. Just 54 years of age. One of the very best batsmen to watch. Everything he did just looked effortless very similar to teammate Mark Waugh. Averaged a very good 46.37 over 67 tests for Australia.

Let’s hope he pulls through. Just found this from 9 News not paywalled.

One of the last cricketers I followed - probably because he is a West Aussie

When you heard at age 15,his praises sung by folk in his local area by folk who didn’t necessarily follow Cricket, you knew he was someone to look out for in the future.

He forged an outstanding career after that, despite the odd moments in Western Australian Cricket and an on stage moment(that’s for some other time, way down the track if warranted)and literally had the runs on the Board,to be Proud of.

Here’s hoping for a Full and Speedy recovery,Damien!

Brilliant elegant timer of the ball
simliar to Mark Waugh in the way that he never seemed to hit the pill hard
but it just raced away to the boundary
his offside play was very very good
remember him almost winning a game by himself against Curtly Ambrose
who was almost unplayable that day might have been the MCG

fingers crossed he gets through it

He fell ill on Boxing Day apparently.

Unfortunately Meningitis is an unforgiving beast, strikes quickly and unexpectedly…usually preys on the young though…wishing Martyn all the best in his battle…one of the silkiest strikers of a cricket ball, I have ever seen…so effortless and serene when on song…especially off the back foot through point and the covers…actually through midwicket as well…class act.
