Cricket Expanding at Last

I like this one. A new promo from Cricket Indonesia for TV etc. Pure propaganda but every country has their own ways of doing things. It’s very let’s say…nationalistic

And this from a recent match from the serene playing fields of Chiang Mai, Thailand between emerging Thailand and tiny Bhutan. I wanted to see this Thai kid named Wanchana Uisek bat (Left hander no 6) because I’ve heard a lot about him. Didn’t disappoint. So good to see countries like Thailand produce homegrown kids like him. That’s what it’s all about. Bhutan aren’t yet ranked in the top 100 but everyone starts somewhere. I did read an article about some old timers complaining that Bhutanese kids are turning away from archery to this new fangled bat and ball game…lol

Shameful to think that Cricket Australia allocates itself (as a voting member) tens of millions of dollars from ICC global events. These events are nothing to do with Cricket Australia apart from the fact that they are guaranteed a place at each of them.

That on top of the money it makes from broadcasting rights (in the many millions) from home broadcasting deals via channel 9 (internationals), Ten (Big Bash), Macquarie media (Radio), ABC (Radio)

In their wisdom, Cricket Australia and the other 9 voting members allocate from ICC Global events roughly 30 thousand dollars per year to the likes of Indonesia.

That’s how corrupt the system is with Australia, sadly, front and square with their snouts firmly in the trough.

Cricket followers in this country should be ashamed.

Agreed

Wow I did not know that AR.
What a pity Canada & USA did not continue along the cricket lines rather than baseball.

Was told today the Champions Trophy played in a few weeks in England. Is only the top 8 ranked Cricket nations.Bangladesh ranked No 8 and West Indies no9.So the windies are not playing.

gtr: yep, I noticed that too with a slightlly raised cricket eyebrow. The WI have just won a test match too in the Carribbean.

GTR & AR as a kid of the late 70s & 80s it is almost incomprehensible to think the West Indies would not be the Top let alone not in the Top 8 cricket nations in the world.

Theres time and schedules but 10 teams to me.9 of the 10 icc members and the rest fight for that last place.Probably Ireland of Afganistan.
Just on the Windies they have the wildcard factor like Pakistan. You don’t know which teams going to turn up on he given day.But it makes for good entertainment.

gtr and BH

The WI ha had a fantastic record given the relativelly small population of the region. In per capitia terms Barbados and Antiqua Barbuda must be the greatest cricket bastians of the world. They would have really been in business if Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago had of been so productive in producing cricketers. Even in the glory days of the WI, L G Rowe, A. Logie, M.A. Holding and C Walsh, were the only chaps whom orginatted from the two countries – Jamaica and TT — which had the biggest populations.

For me at least, the WI team from 1975-1995 was the greatest sports team in history

Ark WSC taught the West Indies how to win.Just a point on the nations that make up the West Indies cricket side.Clive Lloyd was from Guyana mainland South or Central America, south I think.
Antiga produced there fair share Sir Viv,Richie Rich,Andy Roberts, Curtley Ambrose.

Incredible side in that era AR & GTR.
There were times as a kid where I wondered if we would ever beat the Windies again.
I didnt realise there had been very few WI players come from both Jamaica & T&T.
It might be worth doing a breakdown from that great era to see where most of the players did originate?

BH and GTR:

the 1980 side had the following

Barbados:

Haynes, Greenidge, Garner

Jamaica

Rowe, Holding

Trinidad

Murray

Guyana

Alvin K, Llyodd Croft

Antigua

Sir IVA Richards
Sir A. E. Roberts

the 1985 side had the following:

Haynes, Greenidge, Garner, Marshall

Jamaica

Dujion, Holding Walsh

Trinidad

HA Gomes Logie

Antigua

Richards
Richardsaon

Big effort by Barbados, Antigua, and to some extent Guyana; the big two have certainlly under-performed. I think if we went back to the 1960s, six or seven of the team would jave been from Barbados.

Thoes comments made by Sir Viv about the Windies being defeated behind closed doors.
The Windies had a horrible over rate .That Lloyd era they where lucky to bowl 60 overs a day.Now if you don’t bowl 90 overs a day you get fined. The windies slow over rate kept there fast bowlers fresh.

gtr: true enough on the WI over rate; the Chappell brothers complain about it to this day, justififiablly to my mind. In any case, we really should have won the 1984-5 series, dropping far too many catches which took the pressure off the tourists.

WCL Div 3 currently taking place in Uganda

Highlights of Uganda v Canada at Lugogo Oval in Kampala.

Pretty unusual looking ground I must say.

Ugandans are very passionate about cricket and their games have a good atmosphere.

Nitish Kumar is one of the players that came all the way through the Canadian system.

Now he’s captain and he is the spokesperson for Canadian Cricket

Them Canucks talk funny eh

LH: that is true, they have a very Scottish way of enunciatting some of their vowel sounds.

I just hope that Canada find and develop more players like Nitish…rather than relying on ready made migrant players from Pakistan, India and the WI.

Canada currently on a short term gain angle which will result in long term pain.

But the game there is controlled by expats. White Canadians don’t get a look in and thuis have lost interest. People know when they ain’t wanted and gradually drift away.

Uganda, on the other hand are 100% homegrown and now have the second biggest program in Africa behind South Africa. Something good going on there.

I’ve seen cricket played in Uganda and they go alright. It is part of the private school system there and kids get exposed to it at an early age. I’ve seen cricket in Ghana as well which has a vibrant local cricket comp and attracts players from other part of West Africa.

I was in Zimbabwe a few weeks ago for work, around the time that Canada were playing Zimbabwe A preceding their trip to Uganda. I went to a provincial game (their state league) at the Old Hararians Club ground. FMD how these guys keep going with the ruination of their facilities is a mystery. The standard of cricket was great considering the state of the oval. The pitch was fine but outfield was an abomination with bricks painted white as boundary markers. Most Perth public parks would be in better nick than Old Hararians.

Zimbabwe, being a “full member” receive millions of dollars every year from the ICC but it is a mystery to all where that money goes.

I’m rapt with what you said about Uganda. I really like the way they are progressing as far as development goes and it’s heartening to get some confirmation.

And a good win just now against Malaysia in WCL Div 3.

I just wish these games from Uganda were streamed live. Quite often WCL matches are but not this tournament.

I’ve seen Uganda play live in Buenos Aires believe it or not but I’ve never seen live footage of a Ugandan home game apart from highlights and snippets. Crowd seems to get right into it. Great atmposphere

The Ugandans were in a fair bit of trouble until they unleashed some brutal hitting as these highlights show.
