Cody Smith

A great story from today’s West Online:

Wednesday hero: Cody Smith is a modern-day midfielder, a 193cm beast whose 98kg of muscle makes him East Fremantle’s third heaviest player. He also has a grand pedigree that surprised many in the changerooms last Saturday when Jarrad Jansen presented him with his jumper before his league debut. Thanking the club for the opportunity, Smith said his late grandfather would have been proud of his achievement because “he also played league football and won three Sandover medals”. Barely anyone present knew who Smith was talking about so who was the mystery forefather? None other than official WA Hall of Fame legend Merv McIntosh, the Perth champion who won three Sandovers as well as three Simpson medals and a Tassie Medal.”
…and he kicked a timely goal in the last quarter of the win over Perth!

Geez who would of thought that…hopefully the Perth boys don’t get wind of that little DNA fact…can see STT starting a thread about the WAFL ensuring PFC get their due heritage player rights…didn’t ex Perth champs in Dougie Farrant, Colin Lofts and Bryan Cousins sons play footy for EF back in the day?..surprised Perth didn’t enforce the Jono & Harry Marsh - Ray Sorrell grandfather card with Cody and Big Merv…another case of PFC sleeping at the junior wheel perhaps?

To save STT some grief. I understand the rules on father/son & grandfather/grandson give a qualification option to the player not the club. That is a father/son qualified player can choose to play for his dad’s club despite being residentially bound to another club. Or they can play for their “zone” club despite being qualified to play for their dad’s club.

Just scratching my head trying to work out why these ex players/premiership champions all seem to be attracted to riverside postal codes instead of postal codes alongside Albany highway? I mean we got loads of petrol stations, train stations, fast food drive thru’s, Chinese restaurants, Shisha bars, Mosques….. I just can’t work out how we can’t attract these ex football icons to settle in their post football life along Albany highway?

You left a couple out Freezin, Alan Johnson’s son Chris and Gary Gibellini’ son Linc although obviously Gazza played most of his career at EF prior to switching to Perth. Can I add the happy (Robbie)Hooker’s son Cale to the list?

McCracken at Claremont?

Shields for Subi…

Oh and by the way I can’t imagine a kid wanting to play where his grandad played for that reason alone if didn’t grow up in zone. Not a close enoug connection.

And as DD says…

Yeah forgot about Alan’s son Chris…but hey the kid played 1 colts game for EF, then got drafted to Melbourne…so no loss there for Perth…as for Linc and Cale…well their dad’s did play for EF first before Perth, so I guess that helped…did Steve Lally’s dad/grandad play for Perth?

John Lawrence is another who would of had the option of Perth or East Freo. He like Cody Smith was from the Rossmoyne Jnr Football Club. His father Ray was kind enough to coach at Rossmoyne JFC and the club was fortunate for that. But Perth have managed to pick up a couple of ex-Rossmoyne JFC boys in aging Chris Masten and young Jayden Quill (whose father Peter played in the famous 92 premiership side with John Lawrence!). Earl Spalding was a player to buck the trend. He played for Rossmoyne JFC so could of gone to the blue and whites. As we all know went to the Demons instead and the rest is history. Had a stellar career with the icing on the cake being able to finish it at the Old Easts and winning another premiership medal for the trouble.

Quite right, DD, nothing says success like a south-east suburbs address. I just bought a ticket for the $40m Powerball. If I win, I plan to buy the finest 3 bed brick and tile in all of Kenwick.

That would be right. I’ve been working my arse off for 30 years to try and get into Beckenham and some prick will win the lottery and outbid me probably.

Do you guys actually know how long it takes me to get to KFC from Cott??

There’s a Red Rooster along Stirling Highway with a Peppermint Grove post code STT, will that suffice? I know Melville and Willeton have a KFC, though if you want one with a river view mate, try the KFC in the PFC footy hub of South Perth mate…whilst you are there, pop around the corner to the SPJFC and have a yarn with Birdman…he’d be keen to see you…or anyone that is who has an attachment to the PFC.

Couple of problems with that the main one being that Birdbrain is involved with a senior club and South Perth have not had one for many, many years.

Nice try tho.

Freezin’, the Red Rooster is only in Peppy Grove to cater for the bogans who get the train to the beach to swim in their jeans. The beachside cafes are too full of Claremont players.

STT, gee that’s disappointing to hear, all you Perth boys do is complain about not having river views and the one PFC has got or had, they can’t be arsed to get it up n going again…

Yeah I forgot those bogans from Beckenham do like to travel for a post swim feed Ted. Surely the Booragoon or Melville KFC would be closer for those lads?..but then having no direct train line I guess doesn’t help them getting there, plus the Swan River is less inviting for a dip then the Indian Ocean…is the Cott still popular on a Sunday arvo, remember popping down back in the day watching the likes of Goulding, Panizza and Shorty having a few beers.

Shit they are building brick and tile homes in Kenwick these days Ted? Haven’t they come a long way?

Sounds like you are doing it tough STT. You’ll just have to make do with vol-au-vent’s from the local French bakery.

Without being a smart arse, just smart.
Big Mc was born in 1922 and his famous daughter Jill in 1955.
What a great year.
Not my birth year but I’m sure you Sharky boys will figure out why it was a great year.
Just raising the possibility that Cody might actually be Merv’s great grand son.

That’s a great bit of detective work DF, thanks for clearing that up..

I guess the next bit of triva we need to know now is, how many great grand kids have played WAFL footy…at a different footy club from their great Grandfather?..I can only think of one -

Cody Smith(EF) & Merv McIntosh (P)…
anyone else smart enough to think of any others?

Did Jordan Lockyer’s (SU & WP) grandfather play at SD Freeze?

I see Jono Marsh is out for 4 weeks with a broken jaw following an incident in Freo Saturday night. Bad luck for him and the club.
