Class of 2017.

All done and dusted, well almost, only the rookie draft to come. From reading and hearing, all clubs are happy with those selected.I am happy that Fremantle appear to have done well.A couple of classy mids, a couple of forwards and a couple of big men.
One local selection, Scott Jones from East Perth. Has he been stolen from under the beak of the Eagles!!!
Brayshaw appears to be a class player with great leadership qualities. Though not a West Aussie he has great sporting ties with the West.A mid fielder with great potential.
Cerra is a kid who was being touted late in the week as being Fremantle first selection.Has great wraps form all who follow the under age competition.Another mid who has superb skills.
Third selection Hugh Dixon a forward 195 ans 90, is a big boy.Maybe a little time will be needed on him, but another who has good wraps.
Mitchell Crowdon , a South Aussie boy.Built like a brick shizzen hausen. Big thighs and strong upper body. 175 and 87.Also had SANFL exerience this season.A body well formed already for AFL. Hopefully he will give us many years of good service, like a couple of others have.
Tom North, another mid who is a player who can play inside and out.Has the ability to win his own ball.
Lloyd Meek, a giant at 202 and 106.A ruckman who has played along side Sean Darcy in previous years. Will have to fight to find a spot early though.
Sam Switkowski, another forward.179 and 71.Will more than likely play a lot at peel until he builds up his frame. They say he is quick and tough, and tackles like a mad man.
Scott Jones, a WAFL player from East Perth. Ruckman 201 and 112. A big strong ruckman.Has been around a while now.Had a broken leg back in 2013,did an ACL in 2015.Made his debut for EP this year.
A good selection in my opinion.A few might see time in the Purple this year, and a few to see time at Peel. Some selected for now and a few selected for the future with retirements in mind.

With Natanui, Vardy, Lycett and McInnes I don’t think the Eagles would really have been that keen on Scott Jones Anchor? Why do you keep suggesting Fremantle have beaten the Eagles to him?

Just a question .Nothing sinister in it.

The Eagles had actually used all their picks by the time Fremantle picked up Jones so they clearly weren’t after him.
Could be a good pick up for Freo though big lump of a lad with his best footy ahead of him

I don’t think the Eagles wanted Scott Jones. Especially after they got Brander at pick 13.

Happy with Brayshaw at pick two and even though Cerra looks like a class player, I still think we should have taken Naughton at pick 5.

Why do you think we should have taken Naughton ? Just a question.
Should we have taken him because we could, or is there another reason we should have in your opinion.

Naughton- Classy , strong , agile and tough…Johnno on his knees, Pearce on return from injury?. IMO he would have added depth and potentially could step into a defensive post in their side in 2018. Time will tell how good he is , bu he has all the attributes to be a good player…

Naughton stated before the draft he didn’t want to go to Fremantle. Sounds like a dummy spit for missing out on playing in the GF for Peel. Good luck to him.

Luke Ryan was outstanding last season and Brennan Cox will most likely go down back and is also great overhead.

I think both clubs have done well, WC would have liked a top midfielder, but were too far down the list for that, however Brander is a great pick up. They probably would have preferred Kelly to Ryan maybe, but overall I think they did well. Freo covered all bases they needed to cover and would be quite happy with what they got. Rookie draft today was pretty good also. Freo now need to develope this list over the next few years and have another crack at a flag. Now to see if the drafts they made work out. A bit of a lottery really but have given themselves the best chance.

While I agree that the team needs players that can hit targets hence why we picked up Cerra at five, In my opinion the real top key forwards or key defenders in the game are usually taken in the first round. Once we had picked up Brayshaw at two, I think we should have picked up Naughton at five.

Johnson is 34 and more than likely 2018 will be his last season, Alex Pearce has been out of action for quite a while, Brennan Cox showed good signs this year but is he better up forward or down back.

I’m not disappointed that we got Cerra as I think he also looks like a good player but I think having Naughton who potentially was a 10-12 year key defender for us would have made more sense.

The best two key position players this club has had over the years in my opinion where Matthew Pavlich who was taken at four and Luke McPharlin. Although we traded McPharlin into the club he was still taken at pick 10.

Look at the top key forwards or defenders in the game at the moment, majority of them are taken in the first round. Daniel Talia (13), Alex Rance (18), Michael Hurley (5), Harry Taylor (17), Jesse Hogan (2 mini draft), Jacob Weitiering (1), Joe Daniher (10), Jarryd Roughead (2), Lance Franklin (5) and Jack Riewoldt (13).
